Safety Warnings and Maintenance Instructions
WARNING: IT IS IMPORTANT TO CHECK AND TIGHTEN ALL HARDWARE AT THE BEGINNING AND DURING THE SEASON AS THEY MAY LOOSEN DUE TO WOOD EXPANSION AND CONTRACTION.
- DO NOT climb or walk on the roof.
- Requires two or more people to assemble safely.
- Check for underground utilities before digging or driving stakes.
- Ensure at least 6ft (2m) clearance from any overhead electrical wires.
- Permanent structures may require a building permit. Consult local planning, zoning, and building inspection departments for applicable codes.
- Wood is NOT flame retardant and will burn. Grills, fire pits, and chimineas are a fire hazard if placed too close.
- Wear gloves to avoid injury during installation.
- Use safety glasses during installation.
- Check and tighten all nuts and bolts twice monthly during the usage season.
- Oil all metallic moving parts monthly during the usage period.
- Check all coverings for bolts and sharp edges twice monthly and replace if necessary.
- For rusted areas, sand and repaint with a non-lead-based paint.
- Inspect wood parts monthly. Light sanding may be necessary to maintain a safe environment. Treating the product with protection (sealant) after sanding will help prevent severe checking/splitting and other weather damage.
- Apply a water-repellent or stain yearly to protect the wood. This is a requirement of your warranty.
OWNERS SHALL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR MAINTAINING THE LEGIBILITY OF THE WARNING LABELS.
About Our Wood
Backyard Discovery uses 100% Cedar (C. Lanceolata) wood. Wood is a product of nature and susceptible to weathering.
What causes weathering? Does it affect the strength of my product?
Weathering is primarily caused by water (moisture). Changes in moisture content can cause tension, leading to:
- Checking: Surface cracks along the grain. Larger posts experience more checking than thinner boards.
- Warping: Distortion (twisting, cupping) of the wood.
- Fading: Natural change in wood color to grey over time due to sunlight.
These changes generally do not affect the strength or safety of the product.
How can I reduce the amount of weathering to wood product?
- Apply a water-repellent or stain yearly. This is a requirement of your warranty.
- Inspect wood parts monthly and lightly sand any rough spots. Apply a sealant after sanding.
Assembly Tips & Hardware Identification
Protrusion Hazard
Incorrect: Exposed threads and bolt protruding beyond the T-Nut indicate over-tightening or incorrect hardware. Add washers to eliminate protrusion.
Correct: Ensure approximately 1/8" clearance.
Proper Hardware Assembly
- Bolt and T-Nut Assembly: Tap T-nut into the hole. Insert bolt through lock washer and into the T-nut. Turn clockwise. Do not completely tighten until instructed.
- Bolt and Barrel Nut Assembly: Insert barrel nut through lock washer. Insert bolt through second lock washer and into the barrel nut. Turn clockwise. Do not completely tighten until instructed.
- Lag Assembly: Use pre-drilled pilot holes. If none exist, use the factory drilled hole as a guide to drill a pilot hole into the adjoining board to prevent splitting. Only a lock washer is required for Lag Screws.
Sorting Wood
Arrange wood components by part number before assembly for faster identification and to check for missing or damaged parts.
Sorting Hardware
Sort hardware by the seven-digit alpha-numeric number on the bags or by hardware type (bolts, nuts, etc.).
Hardware Identification
Hardware bags are printed with a seven-digit alpha-numeric part number. During assembly, reference the last three digits of the part number as noted in each step.
