General Guidelines

What is Arduino®

Arduino® is an open-source prototyping platform based on easy-to-use hardware and software. Arduino® boards are able to read inputs – light-on sensor, a finger on a button or a Twitter message – and turn it into an output – activating of a motor, turning on an LED, publishing something online. You can tell your board what to do by sending a set of instructions to the microcontroller on the board. To do so, you use the Arduino programming language (based on Wiring) and the Arduino® software IDE (based on Processing). Additional shields/modules/components are required for reading a twitter message or publishing online. Surf to www.arduino.cc for more information.

Product Overview

The WPI440 is a USB-to-serial UART/TTL interface based on the FT232RL chip. It offers an easy way to add USB capability to microcontrollers, e.g. Arduino® or WPB439.

Use this to give your own breadboard Arduino® USB capability for bootloading or downloading sketches.

The FTDI FT232RL USB to TTL serial converter adapter module supports 5 V and 3.3 V for Arduino® (5-3.3 V can be selected by a switch on the board).

RXD/TXD and power LEDs are provided on the WPI440.

The board is over-current protected by a 500 mA self-restoring fuse.

The WPI440 includes a DTR pin needed to auto-reset Arduino® when downloading to your device.

Example

The diagram shows a typical breadboard setup for using the WPI440 adapter with an Arduino microcontroller. The WPI440 is connected to the breadboard via jumper wires. The diagram illustrates connections for power (5V, 3.3V, GND), serial communication (TXD, RXD), and control signals (CTS, DTR). Components like capacitors (100 nF and 22 pF) are shown connected to the microcontroller (acmega328) for stability.
