Quick Start Instructions

Get your DST4 up and running quickly. This section covers the essential steps for initial setup.

Quick Setup

Ensure your amplifier is in a clean mode with preamp gain set low. Turn the DST4's Output knob fully counter-clockwise before proceeding. Plug the AC power cord into a wall socket.

Straight into an amp

Connect your guitar to the DST4's Input using a shielded cord. Use another shielded cord from the DST4's Left Main Output to the amplifier's input. For stereo operation or amps with stereo inputs, connect the Right Main Output to the second channel input or the second amp.

In an amp's effects loop

The DST4 can be used in two ways with an amplifier's effects loop: 1. Use the DST4's preamp before the guitar amplifier's preamp, and the DST4's effects in the amplifier's effects loop for maximum flexibility. 2. Use it as a standard effects-loop processor by plugging your guitar into the amp, and the DST4 into the amp's effects loop.

Tutorial

The DST4 is designed for intuitive operation, similar to a guitar amplifier. Follow these steps to get started:

  1. Plug in the DST4's AC cord and press the Power switch. Turn on your amplifier or mixer.
  2. Ensure your guitar's volume or mixer/amp input level is up.
  3. Turn up the DST4's Output level and your amp/mixer's gain or return level. You should hear sound.
  4. Use the Input selector button (below the Input jack) to set the DST4 for Humbucker or Single Coil pickups.
  5. Press the FX Bypass button to turn off the effects section for now.
  6. Begin auditioning the preamp sounds by using the Preamp Selector button.

Preamp Types

The DST4 offers four distinct preamp types, each with its own tonal character:

Xtreme

Designed for extreme distortion, ideal for players demanding a tone beyond traditional shred. This setting is meant to be played loud and won't clean up easily.

Scream

Provides a distortion quality reminiscent of late '70s/early '80s stompboxes, with increased gain. It offers a mix of clean signal with distortion for a ratty, smooth sound. The Gain control allows for tone shaping.

Retro

Offers versatility for a wide range of textures, from smooth overdriven vintage tones to Texas Blues distortions. The Drive control allows adjustment from faint tube rattle to a powerful roar.

Cln Tube

Ideal for power surf lead tones, clean country sounds, or bluesy rhythm textures. It utilizes a 12AX7 tube for warmth and responsiveness, allowing it to "dirty-up" with harder picking.

Effects Parameters Explained

Delay Time

Determines the length of the delay effect, supporting short, medium, or long delays for doubling or slapback effects. Regeneration controls the feedback for multiple echoes.

Reverb Decay

Controls the time it takes for reverb to fade. The DST4 includes room and hall reverb simulations.

Speed

Governs the rate of modulation for effects like flanging, chorus, and tremolo.

Pitch

The pitch transposer creates selectable harmonies. Algorithm 9 offers a single harmony, while Algorithms 22 and 23 provide dual harmonies with octave shifts.

Pitch Shift Intervals

A list detailing the intervals created by the DST4's Pitch Transposer, ranging from -octave to +octave, including various major and minor intervals, and detuned unisons.

Connections and Setup Diagrams

The DST4 offers flexible connection options for various setups.

Plugging Directly Into a DST4 and Amp
