Construction and Serviceability
Durable, Energy-Efficient Design
Features double-wall construction with closed-cell polyurethane foam insulation and G90 galvanized steel walls. This construction, with an R-Value of 16, creates a more rigid and durable assembly, minimizing unwanted heat transfer and improving indoor air quality compared to fiberglass insulation.
Streamlined Serviceability
AAON equipment is designed for efficient serviceability, reducing downtime and costs. Accessible compressors, control components, color-coded wiring diagrams, and labeled components streamline service evaluations, ensuring low service costs and maximizing unit run time.
Accessible Cabinet Doors
Full-length stainless steel piano hinges and quarter-turn, lockable handles on access doors provide improved reliability and ease of service.
Increased Thermal Resistance
The double-wall rigid polyurethane foam-injected cabinet panel enhances thermal resistance, reduces air leakage, and attenuates radiated sound. A thermal break minimizes heat transfer between interior and exterior metal cabinet walls.

Low GWP Refrigerant and Heat Pumps
Low GWP Refrigerant
In compliance with the AIM Act of 2020, AAON utilizes low Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants. The RN Series is equipped with R-454B, a refrigerant with a GWP of 466, well below the upcoming regulation limit of 700. This selection supports AAON's commitment to a cleaner and more sustainable future.
Heat Pumps
The RN Series offers efficient cooling and heating via heat pump technology. By reversing refrigeration circuits, these units provide heating without auxiliary gas or electric heat, reducing fossil fuel usage. The RN Series is available as an air-source, water-source, or geothermal heat pump, offering potential cost savings compared to traditional gas heating systems.
Air-Source Heat Pump
Utilizes outdoor air ambient conditions and indoor space conditions to provide heating or cooling. Operates efficiently across various temperatures without requiring a water loop.
Water-Source Heat Pump
Similar to geothermal heat pumps, but uses a cooling tower and boiler system. Common in multistory buildings or large campuses.
Geothermal Heat Pump
Leverages stable underground ground temperatures (45°F-75°F) via underground pipes and water flow for efficient heating and cooling. Ground water heat pumps utilize bodies of water for heat transfer.
Indoor Air Quality
The quality of indoor air significantly impacts occupant health and cognition. AAON's standard design and rooftop equipment options enhance indoor air quality.
Outside Air Bypass
Allows outside air for ventilation and economizer operation. Bypass dampers can also be used for heat exchanger defrosting.
UV Lights
Optional factory-installed UV lights can inactivate airborne pathogens in the airstream.
AAONAIRE® Energy Recovery Wheel
Sensible or enthalpy energy recovery wheels pre-condition outside air, improving energy savings and reducing operating costs, especially for makeup air units. Wheels are available in polymer or aluminum construction with removable segments for easy cleaning.
Outdoor Air Ventilation
Bringing fresh outside air into a building helps flush out infectious aerosols and reduces CO2 levels. High-capacity cooling coils are available to handle the increased latent load of outside air. Research indicates viruses can be rendered inactive on surfaces when ambient relative humidity is between 40%-60%.
Filtration
ASHRAE recommends a minimum MERV 13 filter for effective virus trapping. This option is available on all rooftop equipment sizes. AAON offers up to MERV 14 pleated air filters, supported by standard backward curved supply fans capable of handling the additional static pressure.
Precision Cooling and Heating Control
RN Series units offer precise control through staged, variable capacity, or variable speed compressors, depending on cabinet size and application. Modulating compressors ensure precise cooling, while gas and electric heat can be staged or modulated for accurate heating control.
Two-Step Compressors
Provide improved part-load efficiency with simple staged control, available on select RN units. Optimizes unit IEER without complex refrigeration or DDC controls.
Variable Capacity (Digital) Compressors
Offer a wide range of capacity control (10%-100%) for improved part-load efficiency with simple controls.
Variable Speed Compressors
Operate quietly and provide load-matching cooling with high efficiency at part-load conditions. Integrated refrigeration controls protect compressors and optimize efficiency for VAV and Makeup Air applications.
Interlaced Coil Configuration
A two-circuit system provides excellent turndown and part-load efficiencies. In variable speed/capacity units, the first circuit is variable capacity, feeding the entire evaporator coil face for even supply air cooling distribution. The second circuit compressors are interlaced for additional capacity.
Precision Heating Control
Utilizes patented dimpled stainless steel or aluminized heat exchangers. Staging options include on/off, two-stage, four-stage, modulating, or high turndown. Modulating gas heat enhances fuel efficiency and heater life. SCR-controlled electric heat strips offer precise control without gas piping.
