Instructions for integrating AC•THOR / AC•THOR 9s / AC ELWA 2 with Growatt
This document provides instructions for integrating my-PV devices, specifically the AC•THOR and AC ELWA 2, with Growatt inverters. It covers models including MIDxxx-XH, SPH 3000 – 6000, SPH 5000 – 10000TL3 BH, and SPH 5000 – 10000TL3 BH-UP.
Important Note: If the RS485 communication connection on the inverter is already in use by other devices, reliable communication with my-PV may not be possible. Furthermore, a connection with the AC ELWA-E is not possible as it lacks Modbus RTU (RS485) communication.
1. Basic settings on the my-PV device
Before commissioning, it is essential to read the assembly instructions that accompany the device, as well as the operating instructions available online. You can find the AC•THOR operation manual here and the AC ELWA 2 operation manual here.
2. Communication with Growatt (Modbus RTU)
The combination with Growatt inverters was tested by my-PV using the SPH 10000TL3 BH model. The connection is established using a three-pole Modbus RTU cable that connects the my-PV device directly to the Growatt inverter.
⚠ Use a shielded twisted pair cable and connect the shield to earth (GND) at one end!
⚠ The RTU bus must be fitted with a 120 Ohm terminating resistor!
⚠ When controlled via Modbus RTU, the M7 operating mode cannot be used with the AC•THOR!
Wiring and Connection Details:
AC•THOR 8-pin Connector: Three pins on the 8-pin connector of the AC•THOR serve as the Modbus RTU Gateway. The 120 Ohm terminating resistor is not included with the AC•THOR.
AC ELWA 2 Connection: On the AC ELWA 2, the connection is identified by RS485, A, B, and GND. A diagram shows the use of shielded twisted pair wire and a 120 Ohm termination resistor, noting that this resistor is included in the scope of delivery for the AC ELWA 2.
Growatt Inverter Wiring: The wiring on the Growatt inverters must be carried out according to the Growatt instructions. Specific pin assignments are as follows:
- SPH 3000-6000: RS485-2 uses RS485A on PIN5, RS485 B on PIN4, and GND on PIN7.
- SPH 5000-10000TL3 BH: RS485 uses RS485A on PIN7, RS485 B on PIN8, and GND on PIN2.
- SPH 5000-10000TL3 BH-UP: RS485-3 uses RS485A on PIN5, RS485 B on PIN1, and GND on PIN2.
MID15KTL3-XH Pinout: For the MID15KTL3-XH model, PIN 3 and PIN 4 are used for the my-PV device.
3. Settings on my-PV device
If you have any questions regarding the RS485 connection to your inverter, please contact Growatt Support at service.de@growatt.com.
⚠ According to Growatt, inverters that are not SPH-UP models may require an update to the latest firmware version for RS485 communication. To do this, send the Growatt serial number and a brief explanation to service.de@growatt.com.
⚠ When controlled by an inverter, a meter at the feed-in point is required in the system. Without a meter, the inverter query will not provide any data.
Configuring the my-PV Device:
On the my-PV device display, select the "Growatt (Modbus RTU)" control unit.
Alternatively, these settings can be configured via the web interface, provided the my-PV device is integrated into the local network.
Web Interface Control Settings:
- A 'TIP' box indicates that separate instructions are available for many control types.
- Key settings include:
- Control type: Growatt (Modbus RTU)
- Device ID: 1
- Control state: Conn. to Adj.Modbus.
- Power timeout: 60
- Control target: -50 W (Negative values indicate feed-in. This value should only be changed if you are familiar with the control strategy; refer to Help for details.)
- Interval target value: Off/On (If active, a different target value is used within a set time window.)
- Block start/stop hour: 0
Battery Storage Priority: If a battery storage unit is present and should be charged as a priority, set the "control target" to -150 W. Otherwise, a setting of -50 W is recommended.
