Figure 1 shows the physical layout of the Adyen NYC1/NYC1-SCR device.

Getting Started

The NYC1/NYC1-SCR is equipped with a rechargeable Li-Po battery and can be charged via the USB port or Rear pads.

⚠️ Before first use, the battery must be fully charged. If the device is fully discharged, charging time to fully charged would be approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Main battery replacement:

To replace the main battery of the NYC1/NYC1-SCR, please contact your local Adyen representative or service provider.

Periodic Inspection and Maintenance

The following inspections must be performed on a regular basis after initial receipt and installation of the NYC1/NYC1-SCR:

Operation Modes

To begin operating the NYC1/NYC1-SCR, it needs to be paired with another Bluetooth BLE device that has the installed application. For downloading the latest SDKs for iOS, Android, and Windows, please contact your distributor.

Application/Firmware download mode, System mode, and Clearing Bluetooth pairing info

Application download mode: To enter this mode, maintain the power button pressed while plugging in the USB cable. A characteristic sound will play, and the first white LED will illuminate. Continue holding the power button until the second white LED lights up, then release the button. A characteristic sound indicates the device is in Boot Loader/Application download mode.

System mode: To enter "SYSTEM MODE", maintain the power button pressed while plugging in the USB cable. A characteristic sound will play, and the first white LED will illuminate. Continue holding the power button until the third white LED lights up, then release the button.

Clear Bluetooth pairing information: To enter "Clear Bluetooth Pairing Info", maintain the power button pressed. A characteristic sound will play, and the fourth white LED will illuminate, then release the power button. A characteristic sound will play when pairing info is cleared.

Bluetooth Pairing

To pair the NYC1/NYC1-SCR, connect it to a PC via USB cable. Once connected, a virtual COM port will be created. Check the device manager to identify the connected port. Run the special PC application (see Figure 3). Press the “Search” button in the app; available COM ports will be displayed on the right. Select the connected device's port and press “Connect to device”. On a mobile device (with BLE 4.2), navigate to Bluetooth management, select to connect to NYC1/NYC1-SCR. The mobile screen will display a PASSKEY (Figure 6). White LEDs on the NYC1/NYC1-SCR will light up one by one. The special app will show the Passkey (Figure 4). If the Passkeys match, press the “On/Off” button twice on the NYC1/NYC1-SCR to confirm (Figure 5). The special app will then display “THE DEVICES ARE CONNECTED” (Figure 7). If the Passkeys differ, press the “On/Off” button once on the NYC1/NYC1-SCR to cancel pairing.

Update Firmware and Application with using Firmware API

Firmware and Application on the NYC1/NYC1-SCR can be updated using an application that utilizes the Firmware API. After pairing the NYC1/NYC1-SCR to a COTS device via Bluetooth, as described in “Bluetooth Pairing”, run the Application* on the COTS (smart device) and press "Update device firmware".

* In order to use the NYC1/NYC1-SCR functions with COTS (smart device), special software must be used. Please contact your distributor in order to get the latest demo application and SDK.

Magnetic cards reading

The NYC1/NYC1-SCR features a built-in magnetic card reader with a 3-track magnetic read head, designed to read data from all three tracks with a single swipe.

The magnetic reading head faces downwards. When swiping a card into the reader, the magnetic stripe must be facing upwards, as illustrated. To ensure even reading of the magnetic stripe, keep the edge of the card flat against the inner base of the reader.

Contactless cards reading

The procedure for contactless card transactions may vary depending on the application loaded on the NYC1/NYC1-SCR. Verify the correct procedure with your application provider before performing a contactless card transaction.

To use the Contactless card reading function, special software is required. Please contact your distributor for the latest demo application and SDK.

To Conduct a Contactless Credit/Debit Card Transaction:

  1. Place a contactless card onto the NYC1/NYC1-SCR's contactless logo area.
  2. Remove the card once the transaction is indicated as completed.

Smart cards reading

The procedure for smart card transactions can vary depending on the application loaded on the NYC1/NYC1-SCR. Verify the correct procedure with your application provider before performing a smart card transaction.

To Conduct a Smart Card Transaction:

  1. Position a smart card with the gold contacts facing upward.
  2. Insert it into the ICC card reader slot smoothly and continuously until it seats firmly.
  3. Remove the card when the transaction is indicated as completed.
