TOPA-SV-024 Test Unit

The TOPA-SV-024 test unit is designed to test and maintain Tait portable and mobile radios by providing an interface between the radio, a test PC, and an RF communications test set.

Figure 9.1: TOPA-SV-024 Test Unit Front Panel

The front panel of the TOPA-SV-024 test unit features controls and indicators for managing radio testing. These include a 'Portable / Mobile' switch, 'Mod Audio/Audio Tap In / Off / Mic Audio' switch, 'On Hook / Off Hook' switch, and 'Rx / Tx/PTT' switch. It also has a 'Speaker / Radio / Load' switch. The panel displays labels for various functions and connections, such as 'Computer', 'Tx Audio', 'Rx Audio / SINAD', 'Mic Audio', and 'Radio'.

9.1 Test Equipment Setup

Figure 9.2 illustrates the test equipment setup. This diagram shows how the TOPA-SV-024 test unit connects to a Test PC, RF communications equipment, and an Oscilloscope. It also details the connections to a TM9300/TM9400 radio via various connectors (e.g., RJ11 for PC, DB15 for radio, RJ45 for microphone) and specific cables. The setup includes DC power and RF input/output connections.

9.2 Operation

This section explains the function of the TOPA-SV-024 test unit controls:

Portable / Mobile Switch

This 2-way toggle switch controls attenuation resistors. When set to 'Portable', resistors are switched out. When set to 'Mobile', resistors are switched in (10:1 attenuation). Incorrect positioning may lead to inaccurate SINAD readings or damage.

Mod Audio/Audio Tap In / Off / Mic Audio Switch

This 3-way toggle switch selects audio sources: 'Mod Audio/Audio Tap In', 'Mic Audio', or 'Off' (no audio). 'Mic Audio' is typically used for normal transmit deviation tests.

On Hook / Off Hook Switch

This 2-way toggle switch simulates microphone hookswitch states. 'Off Hook' switches out a 12kΩ resistor from the microphone PTT line (simulating microphone removal). 'On Hook' switches in the 12kΩ resistor (simulating microphone placement).

9.2.1 Rx / Tx/PTT Switch

This 2-way toggle switch selects between receive ('Rx') and transmit ('Tx/PTT') modes. In 'Rx' mode, the PTT line has high impedance. In 'Tx/PTT' mode, the PTT line is pulled to ground.

9.2.2 Speaker / Radio / Load Switch

This 3-way toggle switch directs receive audio. Options are: 'Speaker' (test unit speaker), 'Radio' (radio's internal speaker), or 'Load' (dummy load R1 and R2). For mobile units, the radio's internal speaker is not disconnected when 'Speaker' or 'Load' is selected. A low-level audio signal is available at the SINAD port for all settings.

  • Portable Mode: 'Speaker' activates the test unit speaker; 'Radio' activates the portable's speaker; 'Load' deactivates speakers, terminating the audio signal.
  • Mobile Mode: 'Speaker' activates both test unit and mobile speakers; 'Radio' activates only the mobile speaker; 'Load' keeps the mobile speaker active.
