Safe Driving
Important Safety Precautions
Always wear your seat belt. Airbags are designed to supplement seat belts, not replace them. Restrain all children in the back seat. Be aware of airbag hazards. Don't drink and drive. Pay appropriate attention to driving. Control your speed. Keep your vehicle in safe condition.
Your Vehicle's Safety Features
Includes safety cage, crush zones, collapsible steering column, seat belts, front airbags, side airbags, side curtain airbags, door locks, and seat belt tensioners.
Safety Checklist:
- Ensure all doors are closed and locked.
- Adjust seat position properly.
- Adjust head restraints.
- Always wear seat belts and ensure passengers are belted.
- Protect children using seat belts or child seats.
Seat Belts
Seat belts are the most effective safety device. They keep you connected to the vehicle and protect in various collision types. All seating positions have lap/shoulder seat belts with emergency locking retractors. Proper use is crucial: sit upright, well back, belt not twisted, not under arm or behind back. Two people should never share a seat belt. Avoid seat belt accessories that may reduce protection.
Seat Belt Reminder: Indicator and beeper alert if seat belts are not fastened.
Automatic Seat Belt Tensioners: Front seats have tensioners that tighten belts during moderate-to-severe frontal collisions.
Fastening a Seat Belt:
Pull belt slowly, insert latch plate into buckle, tug to ensure security. Position lap belt low across hips, shoulder belt across chest and shoulder. Adjust shoulder anchor for proper fit.
Advice for Pregnant Women:
Wear lap belt low across hips, shoulder belt across chest, avoiding abdomen. Sit upright and as far back as possible.
Seat Belt Inspection:
Regularly check belts for frays, cuts, wear. Ensure latches work smoothly and belts retract easily. Replace damaged belts. Have belts inspected after a collision.
Airbags:
The vehicle is equipped with front, side, and side curtain airbags. They deploy in moderate-to-severe collisions. Airbags supplement seat belts. Sit correctly and wear seat belts to avoid injury from deployment.
Airbag System Components: Includes SRS front airbags, side airbags, side curtain airbags, electronic control unit, seat belt tensioners, sensors, and indicators.
Important facts about airbags: Airbags deploy with force and can cause burns or injuries if not used properly. Keep hands away from deployment path. Do not place objects on airbag covers.
Types of Airbags: Front airbags (SRS), Side airbags (in seat-backs), Side curtain airbags (above windows).
Front Airbags (SRS): Dual-stage, multiple-threshold airbags inflate based on crash severity. They deflate quickly after deployment.
Advanced Airbags: Include seat position sensor for driver and weight sensors for passenger to adjust deployment force.
Side Airbags: Protect torso and pelvis during side impacts. Do not lean into their path.
Side Curtain Airbags: Protect heads in side impacts and rollovers. Deploy in rollovers and moderate-to-severe side impacts.
Airbag System Indicators: SRS indicator and Passenger Airbag Off indicator alert to system status.
Airbag Care: Do not attempt DIY maintenance. Have the system inspected by a dealer after deployment or collision.
Child Safety:
Children 12 and under should ride in the rear seat, properly restrained. Infants in rear-facing seats, smaller children in forward-facing seats, larger children with booster seats and seat belts.
Protecting Child Passengers: Vehicle accidents are a leading cause of death for children. Proper restraint is mandatory. Never hold a child on your lap. Never put a seat belt over yourself and a child. Do not let children play with seat belts.
Safety of Infants and Small Children: Infants must use rear-facing seats until at least one year old and within seat limits. Forward-facing seats for children over one year old within limits. Always use rear seats for child seats.
Selecting a Child Seat: Ensure it's the correct type/size for the child and seating position, and meets safety standards. LATCH-compatible seats simplify installation.
Installing a LATCH-Compatible Child Seat: Use lower anchors and tether strap. Ensure seat is firmly secured.
Installing a Child Seat with a Lap/Shoulder Seat Belt: Route belt correctly, activate lockable retractor, remove slack.
Adding Security with a Tether: Use tether anchorage points for additional security.
Safety of Larger Children: Check seat belt fit. If belt doesn't fit properly, use a booster seat. If a larger child must ride in front, move seat back, ensure proper posture and seat belt use.
Exhaust Gas Hazard:
Engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide. Ensure exhaust system is leak-free. Do not run the engine in confined spaces like garages. If driving with the trunk open, open windows and set climate control to fresh air, high fan speed.
Safety Labels:
Labels are located on the sun visor, dashboard, radiator cap, and doorjambs, warning of potential hazards.
