Drawmer MQ-1 Vintage Equaliser - Quick Start Guide
Welcome to the Drawmer MQ-1 Vintage Equaliser. This guide will provide you with the essential information to integrate the MQ-1 into your studio setup. For more detailed information, please visit the MQ-1 product page on the Drawmer website.
About the MQ-1
The MQ-1 is a single-channel, 7-band proportional Q parametric equaliser, inspired by the legendary 'Motown EQ's' from the 1960s. This 100% analogue EQ features 7 bell curves, each with a variable cut/boost of ±10dB, set at musically significant frequencies. Additionally, it incorporates the highly regarded 'CRUSH' feature from the Drawmer 1971, which adds pleasing harmonic saturation and classic analogue warmth to any signal.
Key Features:
- 7-band proportional Q parametric equaliser for 500 series racks.
- Inspired by the 1960s Motown EQ.
- Integrated 'CRUSH' feature for harmonic saturation and warmth.
- Fully variable 10dB boost or cut for each band.
- Hard-wired bypass.
- Designed and manufactured in the UK.
Controls
The MQ-1 features seven fixed-frequency controls for broad cuts or boosts of up to 10dB:
- 12.5 kHz BRILLIANCE: Used for adding sparkle and airiness. Over-boosting can emphasize hiss.
- 5 kHz PRESENCE: Enhances clarity and edge. Too much can sound abrasive; reduction can create distance.
- 2 kHz UPPER MIDRANGE: Crucial for presence and definition, adding a crunchy character. Use in moderation to avoid ear fatigue.
- 800 Hz MIDRANGE: Improves the visibility of elements in a mix. Over-application can result in honkiness.
- 320 Hz LOW MIDRANGE: Essential for adding bass presence, definition, and fullness. Too much can lead to muddiness; too little results in a hollow sound.
- 130 Hz BASS: Adds warmth and deeper sound with enhanced thump. Excessive boost can create a boomy effect; too little results in a thin sound.
- 50 Hz SUB-BASS: Primarily felt rather than heard, imparting weight and a solid foundation. Can amplify low-end rumble if not used carefully.
GAIN: ±20dB. Used to match the output of the preceding device to the input needs of the EQ bands. Proper gain staging ensures optimal signal level and headroom.
BYPASS Switch: Routes the input signal directly to the output, bypassing all EQ processing. Useful for A/B comparisons.
CRUSH On / Off: Adds a fixed time constant, auto gain makeup compressor and introduces musically pleasing harmonics. The effect varies depending on the frequency band and instrument. It can fatten bass, warm mids, and add shimmer to high frequencies. The effect is progressive; more boost means more Crush. The GAIN control can be used to manage signal levels if clipping occurs.
HARMONICS LED: Indicates the level of harmonics generated by the current EQ and Crush settings. The LED brightens progressively as the EQ/Crush is driven harder.
Installation
To install the MQ-1 into a 500 series rack:
- Consult the manual provided with your 500 series rack for specific installation procedures.
- The MQ-1 requires one 500 series slot.
- Ensure the 500 series rack is powered off and the power cable is disconnected before installing or replacing the MQ-1 module.
- Align the MQ-1 module's connectors with the corresponding connectors in the vacant slot of your rack and gently press the module into place. Do not use excessive force.
- Secure the MQ-1 module using the screws on the front panel.
