Functions of your Café Series Conical Burr Coffee Grinder
The grinder offers advanced functions for optimal coffee preparation:
- Slow Speed Grinding: The combination of a gear-driven motor and conical burr design ensures a slow grinding process, minimizing heat transfer to the coffee and protecting its aromatic profile.
- Dual Mode Settings: Offers two modes for convenience: 'Auto' for grinding coffee on demand directly into the group handle, or 'On' for continuous grinding into a separate container.
- Grind on Demand: The 'Auto' function allows for fresh grinding directly into the group handle as needed, providing complete dosing control and a fresh grind without loss of aroma and flavour.
Operating your Café Series Conical Burr Coffee Grinder
Before first use, wipe the base exterior with a damp cloth. Wash the bean hopper and lid in soapy water, rinse, and dry. Do not immerse burrs or any parts in water or place in a dishwasher.
- Place the coffee grinder on a dry, level surface.
- To attach the bean hopper, position it on the motor base, push down, and turn clockwise.
- Fill the bean hopper with whole coffee beans only.
- Place the hopper lid onto the bean hopper.
- Plug the power cord into a 230-240V AC power outlet and switch the power on.
- Select the desired grind by turning the grind adjustment collar. Refer to the grind setting table on page 9 for guidance.
- For Grinding Continuous Quantities: Insert a small container under the grinder. Flip the switch to the 'On' position to grind. When the desired amount is ground, flip the switch to 'Off'. Remove the container and scoop out the coffee.
- For Grinding into the Group Handle: Add the appropriate dosing funnel to the group handle. Position the group handle into the group handle locator. Press the group handle against the button in the centre of the cradle to grind. When the basket is full, pull the group handle away. Repeat until the desired amount is ground.
Note: Foreign objects like stones or twigs can be found in coffee beans and may jam the grinder. Refer to the Care and Cleaning section if this occurs.
Adjusting the Grind Setting
The grinder features 24 grind settings for precise adjustment, allowing control over particle size and brew quality. Experiment to find the ideal setting for your taste.
- Smaller particle sizes require longer grinding times.
- If coffee gets stuck on finer settings, tap the bean hopper lid to dislodge clumps.
- After prolonged use of finer settings, remove the upper burr and clean away residual coffee to prevent clogging.
Grind Setting Table:
SETTING | BREWING METHOD |
---|---|
2-6 | Turkish |
12-16 | Espresso |
12-16 | Stove Top |
20-23 | Drip Filter |
20-23 | Plunger |
Tips for Best Results:
- Select the correct grind for your brewing method. Setting 1 is the finest, 12-16 are medium for espresso, and 24 is the coarsest.
- For drip filter, start with 8 grams (1 scoop) of coffee per 4 cups of brew water. Finer grinds may require less coffee but can result in bitterness if too fine.
- For weaker coffee, use the recommended amount of coffee and dilute the brew with hot water to maximize flavour and minimize bitterness.
- Grinding too fine can lead to over-extraction and bitter coffee. Grinding too coarse can result in under-extraction, leading to a thin, poor-flavoured brew.
- Ground coffee loses flavour and aroma quickly; grind beans immediately before brewing.
- Buy fresh whole coffee beans weekly.
- Coffee beans are best between 5-20 days after roasting.
- Store whole beans in an airtight container in a cool, dark, dry place. Avoid storing beans in the grinder's hopper for extended periods.
- Regularly clean the bean hopper and conical burrs for optimal performance.
Care and Cleaning
Important Notes:
- Surface marks on burrs are from the hardening process and do not affect performance or taste.
- Always switch off and unplug the grinder before cleaning.
- Do not immerse the motor base or burr assembly in water or any liquid.
- Do not place any parts in the dishwasher.
- Do not use abrasive cleansers or scouring pads.
Cleaning the Motor Base, Bean Hopper, and Coffee Container:
- Wipe the motor base exterior with a damp cloth and dry.
- Wash the bean hopper in warm soapy water, rinse, and dry.
Cleaning the Burrs:
Clean the burrs every three weeks for optimal performance, especially when grinding for espresso. Regular cleaning ensures consistent grinding results.
- Ensure the grinder is switched off and unplugged. Remove the bean hopper by pushing down and turning anti-clockwise.
- To remove the top burr, turn the grind adjustment collar anti-clockwise until its arrow aligns with the arrow on the motor base.
- Press and hold the 'UNLOCK' button at the rear of the motor base while turning the grind adjustment collar anti-clockwise until the arrows align.
- Lift out the top burr using its handle and clean it with the burr cleaning brush.
- Lift the grind adjustment collar away from the motor base and clean it with the brush.
- Clean the bottom burr using the burr cleaning brush.
- Once both burrs are clean, return the grind adjustment collar to its position in the motor base.
- Align the arrow on the collar with the arrow on the rear of the motor base and press down.
- Replace the top burr into the grind adjustment collar and turn clockwise to the desired grind setting.
Adjusting the Burrs for Wear:
Conical burrs are made of hardened steel for longevity. If grinds become less fine, the burrs may need adjustment for wear. Rubbing grinds between fingers or observing espresso extraction can indicate if adjustment is needed.
