Getting Started
Important Information about LP Gas & Gas Connections
What Is LP Gas?
Liquefied petroleum gas (LP gas, propane) is a flammable, petroleum-based fuel. It is a gas at moderate temperatures and pressure but becomes a liquid under moderate pressure inside a container (tank). As pressure is released, the liquid vaporizes into gas.
Safe Handling Tips For LP Tanks:
- A dented or rusty tank may be hazardous; have it checked by your supplier. Do not use a tank with a damaged valve.
- Even if a tank appears empty, gas may still be present; transport and store accordingly.
- LP tanks must be installed, transported, and stored upright and securely. Do not drop or handle roughly.
- Never store or transport the LP tank where temperatures can reach 125° F (51.7° C).
- Place a dust cap on the cylinder valve outlet when not in use. Use only the provided type of dust cap to prevent leakage.
LP Tank Requirements:
- Tank dimensions: approx. 18½ inches high, 12½ inches diameter. Marked 20 lb (9.07 kg) LP capacity or 47.6 lb (21.6 kg) water capacity. Other tanks may be acceptable if compatible with the grill's retention means.
- Tank must be constructed and marked per U.S. D.O.T. specifications or Canadian CAN/CSA-B339 standards.
- Tanks must have a listed OPD (Overfilling Prevention Device) and a Type 1 (CGA 791) tank connection compatible with the grill.
- Tank must include a collar to protect the valve.
- Tanks must have D.O.T. certification and a testing date within five years of current use.
LP Tank Installation
Installation Location: The tank hangs onto a hook inside the cabinet. The collar shape determines the correct hanging direction.
Inspect the Tank:
- Confirm tank valve is fully closed (turn clockwise).
- Inspect tank valve, including internal rubber seal, for damage or debris. Return damaged tanks to retailer.
- Confirm tank valve type is compatible with the regulator.
Install The Tank:
- Ensure all burner control knobs are in the OFF position.
- Locate and secure the metal hose retention clip into the slot on the underside of the tank scale.
- Loosen hand nut and rotate tank lock up.
- Lift tank onto the hook on the tank scale.
- Rotate tank lock down and tighten hand nut.
- Screw regulator coupling onto tank valve clockwise. Hand-tighten only. Using a wrench may damage the coupling and cause a leak. Proceed to "CHECKING FOR GAS LEAKS."
Refilling or Replacing an LP Tank:
How Much Fuel is in the Tank? Some models feature a tank scale indicating fuel level. An indicator on the scale (or front of grill) shows full (A) to empty (B) status.
Removal of the LP Tank:
- Ensure grill is off and cool.
- Confirm tank valve is fully closed.
- Unscrew regulator coupling counterclockwise by hand.
- On the tank scale, loosen hand nut and rotate tank lock up.
- Lift tank off tank hook.
What is a Regulator?
A regulator controls and maintains uniform gas pressure from the LP tank.
Regulator Requirements:
- Regulator is designed for vapor withdrawal; cylinder must be upright.
- Use the supplied regulator and hose assembly. It includes a flow limiting device that restricts gas flow in case of a leak.
- Replacement regulator/hose assemblies must be specified by Weber-Stephen Products LLC (UL-listed Type 1 (CGA 791) tank connection device).
☠ DANGER: Do not line the slide-out grease tray or cookbox with aluminum foil.
☠ DANGER: Check the slide-out grease tray and catch pan for grease build-up before each use. Remove excess grease to avoid a grease fire.
⚠ WARNING: Use caution when removing the catch pan and disposing of hot grease.
⚠ WARNING: Use heat-resistant barbecue mitts or gloves when operating.
⚠ WARNING: Check grill brushes for loose bristles and wear. Replace if loose bristles are found. Replace brush annually.
⚠ WARNING: Keep ventilation openings around the tank clear and free of debris.
⚠ WARNING: The hose must be secured with the Hose Retention Clip to prevent fire or explosion.
⚠ WARNING: Keep electrical supply cord and fuel supply hose away from heated surfaces.
Leak Checking
What is a Leak Check?
A leak check verifies that gas is not escaping after connecting the tank. Weber recommends performing a thorough leak check after assembly and annually. Test fittings where the regulator connects to the tank, where the gas hose connects to the bulkhead, and where the bulkhead connects to the corrugated gas line.
Checking for Gas Leaks:
- Wet fittings with a soap and water solution (20% liquid soap, 80% water).
- Slowly open gas supply by turning the tank valve counterclockwise, checking for bubbles.
- If bubbles appear (leak):
- At cylinder (B): Turn off gas, DO NOT OPERATE. Disconnect tank and return to retailer.
- At regulator (C): Turn off gas. NEVER TIGHTEN REGULATOR WITH TANK VALVE OPEN. DO NOT OPERATE. Contact Customer Service.
- At other fittings (D, E): Re-tighten fitting with a wrench and recheck. If leak persists, turn off gas. DO NOT OPERATE. Contact Customer Service if leak persists.
- If no bubbles appear, leak checking is complete. Turn gas supply off at the tank and rinse connections with water.
NOTE: Rinse connections with water after checking for leaks, as some solutions can be corrosive.
Additional Leak Check Precautions: Test fittings at the cylinder (B) and regulator (C) each time a tank is refilled and reinstalled.
☠ DANGER: Do not use a flame to check for gas leaks. Ensure no sparks or open flames are present.
☠ DANGER: Leaking gas may cause fire or explosion.
☠ DANGER: Do not operate the grill if there is a gas leak.
☠ DANGER: If you see, smell, or hear gas escaping: move away, do not attempt to correct, call your fire department.
☠ DANGER: Always close the tank valve before disconnecting the regulator. Do not disconnect while grill is in operation.
☠ DANGER: Do not store spare LP tank under or near the grill. Never fill tank beyond 80% full. Failure to follow these statements may result in death or serious injury.
Inspect the Hose:
Routine inspection is necessary.
- Ensure grill is off and cool.
- Check hose for cracking, abrasions, or cuts (A). If damaged, do not use the grill.
⚠ WARNING: If the hose is damaged, do not use the grill. Replace using only WEBER authorized replacement hose.

The Flame - Direct or Indirect
DIRECT HEAT SETUP
Use for small, tender foods cooked in under 20 minutes (hamburgers, steaks, chops, kabobs, boneless chicken, fish fillets, shellfish, vegetables). Heat is directly below the food, searing surfaces and developing flavor and texture.
INDIRECT HEAT SETUP
Use for larger cuts of meat requiring over 20 minutes, or delicate foods that would scorch with direct heat (roasts, bone-in poultry, whole fish, whole chickens, turkeys, ribs). Heat is on the sides of the grill, or off to one side. Food sits over the unlit area.
Grilling Do's and Don'ts
- Preheat each and every time: Ensures proper searing and prevents sticking. Preheat on HIGH for 15 minutes, even if cooking on lower heat.
- Don't grill on dirty grates: Leftover residue acts like glue. Clean grates after preheating.
- Be present in the process: Have all tools, food, sauces, and platters within reach ("mise en place") to avoid burning food.
- Create a little elbow room: Leave space between food items on the grates for easier maneuvering and better cooking.
- Try not to peek: Keeping the lid closed maintains heat and smoke for faster cooking and better flavor.
- Only flip once: Avoid excessive flipping to achieve better color and flavor development. Trust the grill.
- Know when to tame the flame: Use an instant-read thermometer to test food doneness accurately.
- Don't be afraid to experiment: Use the grill for appetizers, sides, and desserts. Register your grill for inspiration.
Real Smoke Flavor
Using the Smoker Box
The smoker box can be used with Weber brand wood chips for added smoke flavor.
- Place wood chips in the smoker box (A) and close the lid.
- Place the smoker box on the main cooking grate over a burner (B).
- Ignite the grill and preheat for 15 minutes with main burners on HIGH.
- Once the smoker box emits smoke, adjust burners to desired setting.
- Keep the grill lid closed while cooking.
Notes: Always use heat-resistant mitts/gloves. Grill with the lid closed for smoke penetration. If wood chips catch fire, use tongs to push the smoker box to the back of the grill and keep the lid closed until the fire extinguishes. In windy conditions, keep the burner under the smoker box on Medium or higher to prevent chips from extinguishing.
Cleaning the Smoker Box:
- Before each use, empty ash for proper airflow.
- Note: "Smoke" residue on the smoker and inside the grill is normal and does not affect function.
☠ DANGER: Do not use flammable fluid or combustible products in the smoker to ignite wood chips.
⚠ WARNING: Do not remove hot components from the grill while in use.
⚠ WARNING: Never use wood treated or exposed to chemicals.
⚠ WARNING: Avoid soft, resinous woods like pine, cedar, and aspen.

Solution: Reset the "flow limiting device" by closing the LP tank valve, turning all burner control knobs to OFF, waiting five minutes, then igniting the grill again per instructions.
Other Causes & Solutions:
- LP tank is low or empty: Refill LP tank.
- Fuel hose is bent or kinked: Straighten fuel hose.
- Burner ports are dirty: Clean burner ports (refer to "Cleaning the Burner Ports").
Proper Burner Flame Pattern:
Correct flame pattern shows tips occasionally flickering yellow (A), with a descending light blue (B) to dark blue flame (C).
Symptom: Gas is smelled with yellow, lazy burner flames.
Cause: Spider screens on burners are obstructed.
Solution: Clean spider screens (refer to "Cleaning the Spider Screens").
Symptom: Smell of gas and/or a light hissing sound.
Cause:
- Internal rubber seal in LP tank valve may be damaged.
- Connection between regulator and LP tank may be incomplete.
Solution:
- Extinguish any open flame. Shut off gas. Inspect rubber seal for damage; return tank to place of purchase if damaged.
- Extinguish any open flame. Shut off gas. Refer to LP TANK INSTALLATION & LEAK CHECKING section.
Spider Screens:
Combustion air openings have screens to prevent spiders/insects from building nests that obstruct gas flow. Nests can cause gas odor and yellow/lazy flames, potentially leading to a fire. Keep screens clean.
Checking the Components of the Electronic Ignition System
If ignition button does not produce a ticking sound, check the battery and wires. Remove heat shield to access.
Checking the Battery:
- Ensure plastic protective wrap is removed from battery.
- Confirm battery is installed correctly (C).
- Replace old battery.
Checking the Wires:
- Check that ignition wires are securely connected to the ignition button terminals.
- Ensure ignition wires are properly attached to the ignition module, matching color-coded terminals.
NOTE: Reinstall the heat shield.
⚠ WARNING: Do not attempt repairs on gas-carrying, gas-burning, ignition, or structural components without contacting Weber Customer Service.
⚠ CAUTION: Burner tube openings must be positioned properly over valve orifices.
