Getting Started

Important Information about LP Gas & Gas Connections

What Is LP Gas?

Liquefied petroleum gas (LP gas, propane) is a flammable, petroleum-based fuel. It is a gas at moderate temperatures and pressure but becomes a liquid under moderate pressure inside a container (tank). As pressure is released, the liquid vaporizes into gas.

Safe Handling Tips For LP Tanks:

LP Tank Requirements:

LP Tank Installation

Installation Location: The tank hangs onto a hook inside the cabinet. The collar shape determines the correct hanging direction.

Inspect the Tank:

  1. Confirm tank valve is fully closed (turn clockwise).
  2. Inspect tank valve, including internal rubber seal, for damage or debris. Return damaged tanks to retailer.
  3. Confirm tank valve type is compatible with the regulator.

Install The Tank:

  1. Ensure all burner control knobs are in the OFF position.
  2. Locate and secure the metal hose retention clip into the slot on the underside of the tank scale.
  3. Loosen hand nut and rotate tank lock up.
  4. Lift tank onto the hook on the tank scale.
  5. Rotate tank lock down and tighten hand nut.
  6. Screw regulator coupling onto tank valve clockwise. Hand-tighten only. Using a wrench may damage the coupling and cause a leak. Proceed to "CHECKING FOR GAS LEAKS."

Refilling or Replacing an LP Tank:

How Much Fuel is in the Tank? Some models feature a tank scale indicating fuel level. An indicator on the scale (or front of grill) shows full (A) to empty (B) status.

Removal of the LP Tank:

  1. Ensure grill is off and cool.
  2. Confirm tank valve is fully closed.
  3. Unscrew regulator coupling counterclockwise by hand.
  4. On the tank scale, loosen hand nut and rotate tank lock up.
  5. Lift tank off tank hook.

What is a Regulator?

A regulator controls and maintains uniform gas pressure from the LP tank.

Regulator Requirements:

DANGER: Do not line the slide-out grease tray or cookbox with aluminum foil.

DANGER: Check the slide-out grease tray and catch pan for grease build-up before each use. Remove excess grease to avoid a grease fire.

WARNING: Use caution when removing the catch pan and disposing of hot grease.

WARNING: Use heat-resistant barbecue mitts or gloves when operating.

WARNING: Check grill brushes for loose bristles and wear. Replace if loose bristles are found. Replace brush annually.

WARNING: Keep ventilation openings around the tank clear and free of debris.

WARNING: The hose must be secured with the Hose Retention Clip to prevent fire or explosion.

WARNING: Keep electrical supply cord and fuel supply hose away from heated surfaces.

Leak Checking

What is a Leak Check?

A leak check verifies that gas is not escaping after connecting the tank. Weber recommends performing a thorough leak check after assembly and annually. Test fittings where the regulator connects to the tank, where the gas hose connects to the bulkhead, and where the bulkhead connects to the corrugated gas line.

Checking for Gas Leaks:

  1. Wet fittings with a soap and water solution (20% liquid soap, 80% water).
  2. Slowly open gas supply by turning the tank valve counterclockwise, checking for bubbles.
  3. If bubbles appear (leak):
    • At cylinder (B): Turn off gas, DO NOT OPERATE. Disconnect tank and return to retailer.
    • At regulator (C): Turn off gas. NEVER TIGHTEN REGULATOR WITH TANK VALVE OPEN. DO NOT OPERATE. Contact Customer Service.
    • At other fittings (D, E): Re-tighten fitting with a wrench and recheck. If leak persists, turn off gas. DO NOT OPERATE. Contact Customer Service if leak persists.
  4. If no bubbles appear, leak checking is complete. Turn gas supply off at the tank and rinse connections with water.

NOTE: Rinse connections with water after checking for leaks, as some solutions can be corrosive.

Additional Leak Check Precautions: Test fittings at the cylinder (B) and regulator (C) each time a tank is refilled and reinstalled.

DANGER: Do not use a flame to check for gas leaks. Ensure no sparks or open flames are present.

DANGER: Leaking gas may cause fire or explosion.

DANGER: Do not operate the grill if there is a gas leak.

DANGER: If you see, smell, or hear gas escaping: move away, do not attempt to correct, call your fire department.

DANGER: Always close the tank valve before disconnecting the regulator. Do not disconnect while grill is in operation.

DANGER: Do not store spare LP tank under or near the grill. Never fill tank beyond 80% full. Failure to follow these statements may result in death or serious injury.

Inspect the Hose:

Routine inspection is necessary.

  1. Ensure grill is off and cool.
  2. Check hose for cracking, abrasions, or cuts (A). If damaged, do not use the grill.

WARNING: If the hose is damaged, do not use the grill. Replace using only WEBER authorized replacement hose.

Operation

Igniting the Main Burners

Using the One-Handed Ignition:

Ignite main burners from left to right. All burners should be lit for preheating; not all need to be lit for grilling.

  1. Open the grill lid (A).
  2. Ensure all burner control knobs are in the OFF position.
  3. Turn the LP tank on slowly; wait 60 seconds (B). (Note: Turning on too quickly may activate the flow limiting device.)
  4. For the leftmost burner: Push knob in, turn counterclockwise towards ignite until ticking is heard (C). Hold for 1-2 seconds, then continue turning. Burner should ignite before the HIGH position (D).
  5. Check if the burner is lit by looking through cooking grates and FLAVORIZER bar cutout.
  6. If burner does not ignite within 4 seconds, turn knob to OFF, wait five minutes for gas to clear, then try again.
  7. If burner ignites, repeat steps 4-5 for remaining main burners.
  8. If electronic ignition fails, refer to the TROUBLESHOOTING section for match-lighting instructions.

Preheat the Grill:

Preheating is critical for preventing food sticking and achieving proper searing. It also burns off residue.

  1. Open the grill lid.
  2. Ignite the grill per instructions.
  3. Close lid.
  4. Preheat with all burners on HIGH for 15 minutes (D).

To Extinguish Main Burners:

  1. Push each burner control knob in and turn clockwise to OFF.
  2. Turn gas supply off at the LP tank.

WARNING: Open lid during ignition. Do not lean over open grill while igniting or cooking. Each burner must be ignited individually. If ignition fails within 4 seconds, turn off, wait five minutes, and repeat.

Using the Top-Down Infrared Broiler

The top-down infrared broiler provides high heat for searing, creating a caramelized crust while keeping insides juicy. Grease flows downward, minimizing flare-ups. The broiler grate is adjustable.

  1. Open the lid. Using heat-resistant gloves, adjust the upper cooking surface level to one of three positions (A).
  2. Push in the infrared broiler control knob. Turn counterclockwise towards ignite until ticking is heard. Hold for 1-2 seconds. Continue turning, stopping halfway between ignite and high heat. Hold for 20-30 seconds until the burner ignites and glows orange. Turn to desired heat level.
  3. Keep the lid open when using the infrared broiler on HIGH heat for searing. Use LOW heat for rotisserie/keep warm.

Note: Keep lid OPEN for HIGH heat searing and turn food frequently. Infrared broiler performance may be sub-optimal when used simultaneously with main burners.

To Extinguish Infrared Broiler:

  1. Push control knob in and turn clockwise to OFF.

Operating the Rotisserie

Preparing the Grill:

Setup:

  1. To set up the motor, push the button on the retractable rotisserie panel (B), pull panel up, and push the locking tab until it snaps. Unwind power cord, route it through the panel hole, and plug into power source.
  2. To prepare for food, slide one spit fork into the rotisserie shaft (C). Push the shaft through the center of the food. Slide the second spit fork into the shaft and insert tines into the food. Tighten both spit fork screws.
  3. Insert the pointed end of the shaft into the motor. Lower the spit into the grooves on the cookbox (D).
  4. Set infrared broiler to LOW heat.
  5. Switch on the motor and close the lid.

Cooking Tips:

Use and Care:

Rotisserie Motor Storage:

  1. Before retracting the panel, unplug the power cord and store it in the retractable rotisserie assembly's storage area (E).
