JXB-178 Non-Contact Infrared Thermometer

Quick Start Guide

Using the Thermometer

A diagram illustrates the JXB-178 thermometer, highlighting key components: the LCD display, Mode button, Memory button, Beep function, and the ON/SCAN button.

Important: Before Taking First Measurement

The thermometer requires acclimation to the ambient environment for accurate measurements. Allow the JXB-178 to adjust to room temperature for at least 15 to 20 minutes before its first use. For subsequent uses, if there's a significant change in ambient temperature, allow the device at least 15 minutes to acclimate before taking a measurement.

Taking a Measurement

  1. Press the ON/SCAN button to power on the thermometer. The LCD screen will turn green when ready.
  2. Position the thermometer between 1.2" to 2" (3 to 5 cm) from the patient's forehead. [Visual shows correct distance]
  3. Press the ON/SCAN button to take the measurement.
  4. The measurement will be displayed on the LCD screen.
  5. To repeat the process, return to step 2. Allow 3 to 5 seconds between measurements.
  6. The thermometer automatically turns off after 30 seconds of inactivity.

Changing Temperature Mode

With the thermometer on, press the MODE button to cycle through three modes: BODY, SURFACE, or ROOM. The default mode upon first use is BODY. Measurement ranges are:

  • BODY mode: 89.6°F to 109°F (32°C to 42.9°C)
  • SURFACE mode: 32°F to 140°F (0°C to 60°C)
  • ROOM mode: 50°F to 104°F (10°C to 40°C)

The last measured mode becomes the default for subsequent uses. Always use BODY mode for internal human temperature measurements.

Icons indicate temperature modes (Surface, Body, Room), units (Celsius, Fahrenheit), audio settings (ON/OFF), battery status (Low Battery Indicator), and memory recall.

Changing Temperature Unit

While the thermometer is on, press and hold the MODE button for 2 seconds. The screen will display "F1". Press the MODE button again to switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit, then confirm by pressing the MEM button.

Troubleshooting

Reasons for Lo Message DisplayAdviceReasons for Hi Message DisplayAdvice
Temperature reading is hampered by hair, perspiration, or makeup.Ensure no obstruction or dampness is present before taking the temperature. When body temperature is above 109.2°F (42.9°C).Temperature reading exceeds the measurement range of 89.6°F to 109.2°F (32°C to 42.9°C). Ensure no hot air is blowing in the area. Seek medical attention if necessary.
Temperature is affected by an air draft or a significant change in ambient temperature.Ensure there is no air current in the measurement area, as this can affect the infrared reading.F2 value is set higher than desired.Adjust the high alarm temperature setting to be closer to or at the default value of 100.4°F (38°C).
Temperature readings are taken too close together, and the thermometer did not have time to reset.Pause for a minimum of 3-5 seconds between readings; a 5-second pause is recommended. The room/ambient temperature is above 104°F (40°C).Ensure the thermometer is operated within the ambient temperature range of 50°F to 104°F (10°C to 40°C).
Measuring from too far a distance. The ambient temperature is below 30°F (0°C).Take measurements at the recommended distance of 1.2" to 2" (3 to 5 cm) from the forehead. The surface temperature exceeds 140°F (60°C).Temperature reading exceeds the measurement range of 32°F to 140°F (0°C to 60°C).
Measuring after applying a cold compress, taking medicine, or bathing.Ensure the measuring environment temperature is higher than 32°F (0°C). If any of these conditions apply, wait 30 minutes before testing again.

Low Battery Detection

If the battery voltage drops below 2.7V, the JXB-178 Non-contact Infrared Thermometer will display a [flashing battery symbol] to indicate that both batteries need replacement.

Changing the Batteries

The JXB-178 requires 2 AA alkaline batteries. Replace both batteries when the [low battery symbol] appears on the LCD screen. Open the lid located at the bottom of the thermometer, replace the batteries while observing correct polarity. Allow the unit 15-20 minutes to acclimate to the ambient environment before performing a test.
