Sonos Sub User Guide
This guide provides information on the Sonos Sub, including its features, setup, controls, specifications, and safety guidelines.
Overview
The Sonos Sub is designed to elevate your audio experience by adding a dimension of deep bass impact. Its wireless and compact design allows for flexible placement, whether positioned vertically or horizontally on any floor surface.
The top of the acoustic slot doubles as a convenient handle for lifting the unit.
Compatibility:
- Sub (Gen. 3) is compatible with the Sonos S2 app (available for Android and iOS).
- Earlier Sub models are compatible with either the S1 or S2 system.
- Sonos Sub is designed for use with most Sonos speakers, with the exception of Sonos Roam, Roam SL, Connect, Port, and Move. Ensure at least one compatible Sonos speaker is set up before adding the Sub.
Refer to the 'Setup' section for instructions on adding the Sub to your Sonos system.
Controls and Buttons
The Sonos Sub features several controls and indicators:
Control/Indicator | Description |
---|---|
1. Acoustic slot | This slot can be used as a handle to lift the Sub. |
2. Status light | Displays the product's connection to WiFi, indicates when the volume is muted, and signals errors. This light can be turned off in your room's settings if it is distracting. |
3. Join button | Press this button to connect during the setup process. |
4. Ethernet port | An Ethernet port is available for a wired connection to your router, which can be useful if your WiFi connection is unstable. |
5. AC power (mains) input | Connect the supplied power cord to a power outlet here. Ensure the cord is pushed firmly into the Sub until it is flush with the surface. Using a third-party power cord may void your warranty. Always use the proper power adapter for your country. |
Setup and Placement
Selecting a Location
The Sonos Sub is engineered to deliver optimal sound regardless of its placement. Consider the following:
- Use the acoustic slot as a handle when lifting the Sub. Always bend your knees to protect your back when lifting heavy objects.
- Ensure at least one side of the slot is free from obstruction. If placing the Sub vertically against a wall, do not block the front opening.
- When placing the Sub horizontally on the floor, avoid placing anything on top of it. If positioning it under furniture, leave at least 1 inch (approx. 2.5 cm) of clearance along the top.
- The Sub is designed to sit directly on the floor. It can be placed in a corner, against a wall, behind, under, or next to any piece of furniture on any type of floor surface.
- The Sub can be positioned either vertically or horizontally. For horizontal placement, optional permanent felt feet can be attached to protect your floor.
Connecting the Cables
- Attach the power cord and plug the Sub into a power outlet. Ensure the power cord is pushed firmly into the Sub until it is flush with the surface.
- Download the Sonos app from your device's app store if you haven't already. The app is used to set up and control your Sonos system. Refer to the 'Setup' section for more details.
Note: Make sure you have set up at least one compatible Sonos speaker before adding the Sub.
Note: Once the Sub is paired with a Sonos speaker, it will not appear as a separate device in your system. Any adjustments made to the paired speaker, such as volume, mute, or music selection, will also affect the Sub.
Attaching Optional Feet
If you plan to place the Sub horizontally on a hard floor, you can attach permanent felt feet (sold separately) to protect the floor surface. If placing the Sub on a rug or positioning it vertically, felt feet are not necessary.
Note: The felt feet use a strong adhesive and are not removable once attached.
- Lay the Sub down with the Sonos logo facing down. Ensure the felt feet are adhered to the side without the Sonos logo.
- Place the provided guide on one corner of the unit and fold the flaps over the edge.
- Peel the backing off one of the felt feet.
- Press the felt foot (sticky side down) onto the unit, aligning it within the circular portion of the guide.
- Attach the remaining three felt feet following the same procedure.
Product Settings and Pairing
Sub Settings
To adjust your Sub's settings, navigate to Settings (represented by a gear icon ⚙) > System and select your Sub.
Setting | Description |
---|---|
Sub | Toggle the sound from the Sub on and off. |
Sub level | Use the slider to increase or decrease the subwoofer volume. This setting can help match the subwoofer level to your main speakers. |
Phase control | Adjust the phase control for your Sonos Sub or third-party subwoofer by choosing 0° or 180°. Flip the setting if you do not hear sufficient bass in your usual listening position. Note that phase control is automatically set and cannot be changed if the room is tuned using Trueplay, unless Trueplay is disabled. |
Reset | Resets all Sub audio settings to their default values (0). |
Changing Speaker Pairing
You can easily change which Sonos speaker your Sub is paired with. If you are moving the Sub to a new room, wait for the status light to stop flashing after plugging it back in.
- Navigate to Settings (⚙) > System and select the speaker your Sub is currently paired with. It will appear in your list of rooms as [speaker name (+Sub)].
- Tap Remove Sub.
You can then pair the Sub with a different Sonos product or choose not to use it at the moment. It will be listed as "unused" in your product list until paired with another Sonos speaker.
Connecting a Second Sub
You can connect a second Sub to your Sonos system for an enhanced audio experience.
Note: At least one Sub in the system must be a Sub (Gen 3). Sub (Gen 3) units have a square button on the side, whereas Sub Mini units have a round button. You cannot pair a Sub Mini with a Sub.
- Navigate to Settings (⚙) > System and select the speaker your Sub is paired with. It will appear as room (+Sub) in your list of rooms.
- Tap Connect Second Sub to begin the setup process.
