Installation Instructions
Preparation: Removing Existing Disposer (Steps 1-8)
Before You Begin: If connecting a dishwasher, the drain plug MUST be removed (see Step 15).
- Turn off power: Disconnect electrical power at the circuit breaker or fuse box.
- Disconnect plumbing: Disconnect the drain trap from the waste discharge tube. Disconnect the dishwasher if it was connected to the disposer.
- Loosen mounting: Support the existing disposer. Insert the end of the wrenchette (H) into the right side of the mounting lug and turn. The disposer will fall free.
- Remove disposer: Flip the disposer over and remove the electrical cover plate. Save the cable connector if applicable.
- Disconnect wiring: Disconnect the disposer wires from the electrical supply.
- Check mounting compatibility: If replacing an existing disposer, determine if the new mounting assembly is the same as the old one. If yes, you may skip to Step 15. If no, continue to Step 7.
- Loosen mounting screws: Using a flathead screwdriver, loosen the 3 screws on the mounting assembly.
- Remove snap ring: Using a flathead screwdriver, pry off the snap ring (G).
Installing the Sink Flange (Steps 9-14)
- Remove old flange: Remove the old sink flange from the sink. Remove any old plumber's putty from the sink with a putty knife.
- Apply putty: Evenly apply a 1/2" thick rope of plumber's putty around the new sink flange (B).
- Install new flange: Press the new sink flange (B) firmly into the sink drain opening. Remove excess putty from around the flange.
- Secure flange: Place a weight, such as the disposer itself (once assembled), on the sink flange to hold it in place while you work. Use a towel to avoid scratching the sink.
- Assemble mounting hardware: Insert the fiber gasket (C), backup flange (D), and mounting ring (E). Hold these in place while inserting the snap ring (G). Open the snap ring (G) and press firmly until it snaps into place.
- Tighten screws: Tighten the 3 mounting screws (F) evenly and firmly against the backup flange.
Connecting Electrical Supply (Steps 16-20)
- Remove dishwasher drain plug (if applicable): ⚠️ IMPORTANT: If connecting a dishwasher, the drain plug MUST be removed. Turn the disposer (I) onto its side and knock out the drain plug with a screwdriver. Remove the plug from inside the disposer with pliers. ℹ️ NOTICE: The drain plug cannot be replaced once removed. If the dishwasher connection is made without removing the plug, the dishwasher may overflow.
- Prepare disposer for wiring: Turn the disposer over and remove the electrical cover plate. Pull out the wires.
- Install cable connector: Insert a cable connector (not included) and run the electrical cable through the access hole on the bottom of the disposer. Tighten the cable connector securely.
- Wiring requirements: This disposer requires a switch with a marked "Off" position (wired to disconnect all ungrounded supply conductors) installed within sight of the disposer sink opening (1 hp minimum rating).
- Connect wires:
- Connect the white wire from the disposer to the neutral (white) wire from the power source.
- Connect the black wire from the disposer to the hot (black, red) wire from the power source using wire nuts (not included).
- Connect the ground wire to the green grounding screw. The unit must be grounded for safe and proper installation.
- Secure wiring: Push the wires into the disposer and replace the electrical cover plate.
Attaching Discharge Tube and Mounting Disposer (Steps 21-23)
- Prepare discharge tube: You may need to trim the discharge tube (J) to ensure a proper fit.
- Attach discharge tube: Slide the flange (L) over the discharge tube (J). Insert the gasket (K) into the discharge outlet. Secure the flange and discharge tube to the disposer with two bolts (M).
- Mount disposer using Lift & Latch™:
- Note: The Lift & Latch™ technology features a lower mounting ring that is fixed with a tab; it will not turn freely on the disposal. This is intentional for ease of installation.
- Align: Lift the disposer to align with the sink flange. Ensure all three (3) mounting tabs on the lower mounting ring are aligned with the lowest part of the three (3) ramps on the flange.
- Engage: Slightly push/compress the mounting gasket against the flange and turn the disposer to the right to slide up the ramps. Verify all three tabs are engaged on the flange ramps.
- Secure: Once the lower mounting ring is secure on the flange ramps, the disposer will rotate freely. Rotate the disposer to the right and align with plumbing. ⚠️ Caution: Do not turn the disposer to the left as it could fall off the flange ramps.
- Lock in place: Use the wrenchette (H) for leverage. Insert it into one of the hooks on the lower mounting ring and turn right until all three tabs are over the ridges on the high side of the ramps. (Alternatively, pliers can be used to help secure the disposal.)
Final Installation Steps (Steps 24-26)
- Reconnect plumbing: Reconnect the drain pipe. If the dishwasher connection is used, ensure the drain plug in the disposer was removed. Ensure the discharge tube mount is straight.
- Apply spec label: Detach the removable portion of the spec label and place it in a visible location.
- Test for leaks:
- Insert the stopper (N) into the sink opening (B) and press down evenly until it snaps into place.
- Fill the sink with water.
- Remove the stopper (A) to drain the water.
- Look under the sink for any signs of leaking water.
Operating Instructions
- Remove the stopper from the sink opening and run cold water.
- Turn on the disposer.
- Slowly insert food waste into the disposer. ⚠️ WARNING: Position the stopper to minimize possible ejection of material while grinding.
- After grinding is complete, turn off the disposer and run water for a few seconds to flush the drain line.
DOs:
- First turn on cold water, then turn on the disposer. Continue running cold water for several seconds after grinding is completed to flush the drain line.
- Grind hard materials such as small bones, fruit pits, and ice. The particles create a scouring action inside the grind chamber.
- Grind peelings from citrus fruits to freshen up drain smells.
- Use a disposer cleaner, degreaser, or deodorizer as necessary to relieve objectionable odors caused by grease build-up.
DON'Ts:
- DON'T POUR GREASE OR FAT DOWN YOUR DISPOSER OR ANY DRAIN. It can build up in pipes and cause drain blockages. Put grease in a jar or can and dispose of it in the trash.
- Don't use hot water when grinding food waste. (It is OK to drain hot water into the disposer between grinding periods.)
- Don't fill the disposer with a lot of vegetable peels all at once. Instead, turn the water and disposer on first, then feed the peels in gradually.
- Don't grind large amounts of egg shells or fibrous materials like corn husks, artichokes, etc., to avoid possible drain blockage.
- Don't turn off the disposer until grinding is completed and only the sound of the motor and water is heard.
ℹ️ NOTICE: Failure to flush the disposer properly may result in damage to the disposer and/or property damage.
User Maintenance Instructions
Cleaning the Disposer
Over time, food particles may accumulate in the grind chamber and baffle. An odor from the disposer is usually a sign of food buildup. To clean the disposer:
- Place the stopper in the sink opening and fill the sink halfway with warm water.
- Mix 1/4 cup baking soda with water.
- Turn the disposer on and remove the stopper from the sink at the same time to wash away loose particles.
Releasing a Disposer Jam
If the motor stops while the disposer is operating, the disposer may be jammed. To release a jam:
- Turn off the disposer and water.
- Insert one end of the self-service wrenchette into the center hole on the bottom of the disposer. Work the wrenchette back and forth until it turns one full revolution. Remove the wrenchette.
- Reach into the disposer with tongs and remove the object(s).
- Allow the disposer motor to cool for 3-5 minutes, then lightly push the red reset button on the disposer bottom. (If the motor remains inoperative, check the service panel for tripped circuit breakers or blown fuses.)
⚠️ WARNING: Injury Hazard. Remove wrenchette before reconnecting power to the disposer. Do not hold the wrenchette when operating the disposer. Failure to do so can result in broken bones or cuts.
