Boilers and Interfaces
Most boilers operate in two modes. The first, called dry contact, relay, or on/off (On/Off), activates your boiler at 100% when a heat demand is made, and at 0% when there is no longer a demand. The second mode, the modulating interface (or digital), has the ability to regulate the boiler's power to heat according to the intensity of the heat demand.
Dry Contact Interface
With a relay system, the boiler is activated at 100% or deactivated based on the heat demand.
Modulating Interface
With a modulating interface heating system, the boiler modulates the heat supply provided based on the importance of the heat demand.

- If your current thermostat uses the dry contact (relay) interface to control a water heating system (hydronic), tado° can always replace it.
- By using a modulating interface, tado° offers more economical control of your boiler, and a thermostat corresponding to a better ErP energy saving class (Class VIII).
- tado° is unique as it is compatible with 95% of central heating systems (having a modulating interface such as Opentherm, Vaillant BUS, BS BUS, Viessmann KM BUS or using the dry contact interface) as well as heat pumps. Please find the list of compatible boilers with tado° and their interfaces at the end of this document.
Collective Heating Systems and District Heating
- tado° adapts to collective heating and district heating systems by replacing the current wired thermostat with a tado° Smart Thermostat.
- If you do not have a wired thermostat in your home, it is possible to install Smart Radiator Thermostats to control water radiators equipped with a thermostatic valve.
Wood/Pellet Stoves
- If your wood/pellet stove uses the relay interface, you can replace your old thermostat with a tado° Smart Thermostat. If it uses another interface or you do not know the interface used, please contact us via chat on our website.
Heat Pumps and Air Conditioning
- If your heat pump only provides heating and is controlled by a wired thermostat, it can work with the tado° Smart Thermostat. Please check your system's compatibility using the table on the next page.
- If your heat pump or air conditioner operates with a remote control using infrared signals and displays the active air conditioner parameters, your heat pump is compatible with tado° Smart AC Control.
Underfloor Heating
- A thermostat controlling a water-based underfloor heating system can almost always be replaced by following the instructions provided by tado°. Cooling via underfloor heating is not supported by tado°.
- tado° is not compatible with electric underfloor heating systems.
Systems with Resistance Networks, Electric Radiators, Outdoor Sensors, and Solar Panels
- tado° is not compatible with systems using a resistance network or a pilot wire.
- tado° is not compatible with electric radiators.
- If your system is equipped with an external temperature sensor, it will not affect tado° compatibility or installation.
- tado° may not always function when solar thermal panels are part of your installation. Please contact us if this is your situation so we can confirm your system's compatibility.
Compatibility Table for Common Boilers
The list below is based on systems with a single heating circuit. If your boiler serves multiple heating circuits, please contact our technical support and provide as much information as possible about your current heating installation.

If your brand is not listed here, you can contact us to check if your specific system is compatible with tado°.
Please note: although tado° is compatible with 95% of boilers, some do not currently support tado°. In some cases, compatibility may depend on the entire heating system (thermostat, controller, solar panels...). Please note that all information provided in this guide is for guidance only and is not exhaustive.
