Model 1819: Serial Stereo Bus Switch
Introduction
The Audio Authority® 1819 is a high-level, single position stereo speaker switch designed to demonstrate a pair of speakers in retail environments. It connects to a high-resolution audio player, such as the Audio Authority Model 1803, or any compatible media player like a BrightSign® XD3 (requiring custom programming), and an 1805 amplifier for speaker power.
Key features include:
- Timeout after 90 seconds
- Coordinates with other devices like media players and lighting modules
- Provides a power bus for passive head unit display
A printed circuit board with various connectors, including RJ45 Ethernet, speaker terminals, and power connectors. Key components like an integrated circuit (LPC1111F), relays, and resistors are visible.

Board Overview
A diagram of the Audio Authority 1819 circuit board labels the following connection points: RS-485 COM BUS, LEFT & RIGHT SPEAKER BUS, LEFT & RIGHT SPEAKER OUTPUT, BUS ID DIAL, POWER BUS CONNECTORS 1-3. It also indicates the POWER LED and PRODUCT SELECT BUTTON.
The speaker bus wiring is color-coded: Green for Left +, White for Left -, Brown for Right +, and Gray for Right -.
Speaker Bus Input
Connect the speaker bus harness to the left and right speaker outputs of a Model 1805 or equivalent amplifier. Plug the speaker bus connector into the 1819's speaker bus port. Repeat for each additional 1819 unit.
Speaker Output
Connect the left and right speakers to the speaker output harnesses. Plug the connector into its designated L/R 1819 speaker port. Repeat for each additional pair of 1819 modules. The continuous speaker bus provides left and right audio signals for easy installation.
Features and Operation
Push-Buttons
Illuminated stainless steel momentary switches allow selection of the product to be demonstrated. Pressing a different product's button deselects the previous selection and resets the fixed timeout.
An image shows an Easy Plug RJ9 connector with a push-button, noting that several colors are available upon request.
RS-485 Communications Bus
Demonstrations are activated by a push-button press and communicated via the RS-485 Communications Bus to other devices on the bus, ensuring only one speaker position is active at a time.
Bus ID Dial
Assign a unique ID to each 1819 unit for operation on the serial bus. Up to 16 unique ID addresses are possible. After changing the Bus ID, cycle power to the 1819 modules.
An image of the Bus ID Dial shows numbered positions for setting the unit's address.
Timeout
The timeout interval is fixed at 90 seconds after the last button press. After this period, the demonstration ends, and the system returns to standby.
Power
Power is supplied over the RS-485 bus from a host device, such as the Model 1805 amplifier. Larger systems may receive power via an external power adapter connected to an open RS-485 port using adapter cable PN 801-408.
Isolated 12V Power Bus
This power bus provides 12V power and a ground connection for a car stereo head unit when used with an external power supply.
Installation Guide
- Attach each 1819 to a flat surface using the provided screws.
- Install product select buttons.
- Set a unique ID for each speaker or speaker pair. Modules with the same ID activate together.
- Connect speaker terminals securely to the speakers.
- Connect the amplifier's speaker outputs to the speaker bus cable securely.
- Connect a Cat5/6 Ethernet cable, terminated to T568A standard, to the RS-485 bus connections on each 1819 and to the host device.
- Connect power adapter (571-043) to AC power, attach the power adapter cable (801-408), and connect to a vacant RS-485 port if necessary.
- Connect an external power supply to AC power, attach +12V and GND to the Power Bus connectors, and connect to car head units as needed.
Example System Configuration
This configuration demonstrates an audio setup with three speaker pairs and three silent head units. The 1819 units provide an isolated 12-volt bus to power each head unit (other power connections are not shown). Serial communication between the media player and the 1805 amplifier triggers a custom video track to play when each product is selected.
A system diagram illustrates the connections: A BrightSign XD Media Player communicates via RS-232 to an Audio Authority 1805 Amplifier. The amplifier outputs to three Audio Authority 1819 Serial Stereo Bus Switches, each connected to a PSB SPEAKER PAIR. The 1819 units also receive 12VDC power. An LCD DISPLAY is shown connected to the media player. The diagram includes a CABLE LEGEND detailing connections for 3.5mm STEREO, RJ9 CABLE, RJ45 ETHERNET CABLE, SPEAKER BUS CABLE, 12VDC, 12V POWER SUPPLY, 12V DC & GROUND, RS-232 SERIAL CABLE, and HDMI CABLE.
