INSTEON 2672-452 LED Lamp User Manual

To Get Started

Everything you need to get your equipment up and running quickly.

Device Overview

INSTEON ID: [INSTEON ID]

Do Not Connect to a Dimmer:

Using INSTEON commands, the INSTEON LED Lamp dims its brightness.

[Diagram shows a dimmer switch with a red 'X' symbol, indicating it should not be used.]

Leave Your Fixture On:

If your switch is turned OFF, communication with the LED Lamp is lost.

[Diagram shows a lit green light bulb with 'ON' and a checkmark, indicating the fixture is powered and communicating.]

If your fixture is controlled by a wall switch, consider enabling an always-on connection.

Interconnection:

Your LED Lamp does not have a setup button. To connect manually, momentarily unscrew the LED Lamp and re-insert it.

[Diagram illustrates unscrewing and then re-inserting the LED lamp to initiate connection.]

INSTEON Interconnections

INSTEON devices can operate autonomously and function as a local switch or dimmer, but they achieve their full potential when interconnected to form a control system. Most INSTEON devices can control another device and be controlled in turn. The process of associating multiple INSTEON devices with each other is called interconnection.

Understanding Interconnection

Links are Unidirectional: When interconnecting INSTEON devices, the links created are unidirectional.

[Diagram shows a unidirectional link from device A to device B.]

Links Remember Device State: The state of the controlled device is saved in the link: on, off, or dimmed.

[Diagram shows a dimmer set to 75% brightness.]

Switch A will activate Switch B, but Switch B cannot activate or deactivate Switch A.

The switch will activate the Lamp Dimmer to 75% brightness.

Controllers: INSTEON devices that can turn other devices on or off are called controllers.

[Diagrams of various INSTEON devices labeled as controllers: sensors, switches, keypads, hub.]

Common controllers include Sensors, Switches, Keypads, and Hubs.

Repeaters: INSTEON devices that receive commands from a controller are called repeaters.

[Diagrams of various INSTEON devices labeled as repeaters: switches, keypads, modules, micro-modules.]

Common repeaters include Switches, Keypads, Modules, and Micro-modules.

Understanding Interconnection (Cont.)

Controller Only: Some devices, like sensors, can only control other devices.

[Diagram: Motion detector controlling a dimmer switch with a red 'X' symbol.]

The Motion Detector will activate the Switch, but the switch cannot control the Motion Detector.

Repeater Only: Some devices cannot control other devices; these devices can only receive INSTEON commands.

[Diagram: LED Lamp controlled by a dimmer switch with a red 'X' symbol.]

Some devices can only connect to devices and lighting scenes as repeaters.

Device Grouping: You might want to group two devices, for example, in a virtual three-way setup. For INSTEON, this is called interconnection.

[Diagram shows two switches, A and B, controlling a load.]

To configure Switches A and B symmetrically so they can control each other and the connected load, interconnection is necessary.

How to Use Interconnection: To perform interconnections, simply power on the devices and execute the connection process twice, once in each direction.

[Diagram shows switch A connecting to switch B and vice versa.]

Connect Switch A to Switch B and repeat the procedure to connect Switch B to Switch A.

Functions Usable Only Via Software

Most INSTEON devices contain functions that can only be enabled, disabled, or modified using INSTEON control software such as HouseLinc and an INSTEON PowerLine Modem.

Functions Usable Only Via Software (Cont.)

Ramp Rate: Customize the speed at which the LED Lamp turns on or off. The default time is 0.5 seconds; the maximum duration is 8 minutes.

[Buttons showing ramp rate options: Instant, 0.5 Seconds, 2 Seconds, 5 Seconds, 15 Seconds.]

Disable Power-On Linking: Prevents the LED Lamp from entering linking mode each time power is disconnected and reconnected. By default, the Power-On Linking function is enabled.

[Diagram with a linking icon and text 'LINKING'.]

Always-On Connection

Since the LED Lamp requires constant power, if you have a light fixture controlled by a wall switch, you might consider connecting that switch as "Always-On" so that flipping the switch does not disconnect the LED Lamp from power. Replacing the wall switch with an INSTEON Switch allows for full control of all INSTEON devices in the home.

Always-On Connection (Wiring)

  1. Disconnect power to your switch at the electrical service panel.
  2. Remove the old switch and disconnect the wires. If your box does not have neutral wires, do not proceed and contact customer support.
  3. Connect the wires of the Dimmer Switch to the wires identified in the electrical junction box. The red load wire is not used and is covered. Ensure wire connectors are secure and no bare copper is exposed, except for the ground wire.

[Diagrams showing electrical panel, switch wiring, and wire connections with labels: Load, Line, Ground, Neutral.]

Note: If an INSTEON switch is not installed, simply connect the two switch wires together.

Note: Check for neutral wires. If none are present, contact customer support.

[Diagrams showing different types of electrical panels: Breakers, Fuse Box.]

Always-On Connection (Installation & Testing)

  1. Mount the Dimmer Switch in the junction box with the LED bar on the left and connect the electrical power to the switch in the breaker panel.
  2. Test your switch by tapping the key to turn it on and off. Your LED Lamp will not change, but the status indicator lights on the switch will.
  3. To connect your switch to the LED Lamp, press and hold the setup button until the device emits a tone.
  4. Momentarily unscrew and re-insert your LED Lamp. Your LED Lamp will emit a double tone.

INSTEON Glossary

  • Controller: The INSTEON transmitter.
  • Repeater: The INSTEON receiver.
  • Blinking: The action of the LED turning on and off repeatedly.
  • Dual Band: An INSTEON device that can send and receive both INSTEON powerline signals and INSTEON radio frequency signals.
  • Ramp Rate: The speed at which the load turns on or off.
  • Activation Level: The default brightness level to which a device will return when turned on.
  • INSTEON: A dual-band mesh networking technology developed by Smarthome/INSTEON. The most reliable, extensible, and simple control and home automation technology in the world.
  • Link: A unidirectional association between a controller and a repeater.
  • Interconnection: A method for associating INSTEON controller buttons with groups of INSTEON responders such that the responders instantly return to a memorized state when the button is pushed. Links can be made manually with the set button or using software.
  • Disconnection: The process by which an INSTEON device can delete saved links. Similar to interconnection, disconnection is a unidirectional process that must be performed in both directions for devices that function as both controllers and repeaters for each other, as is the case with a 3-way switch or 3-way key.
  • Multiple Interconnection/Disconnection: A special mode that allows creating or deleting more than one link simultaneously, without needing to press the setup button repeatedly. When operating in interconnection or disconnection mode, an INSTEON device will continue connecting with other devices until the setup button is touched or four minutes have passed, whichever comes first.
  • Factory Reset: A process that allows clearing all saved links and reconfiguring the device with the factory default configuration parameters.
  • Load: The device being controlled (e.g., a lamp, ceiling fan, etc.).
  • On/Off: A device that can control the connected load to turn it on and off, but cannot regulate brightness. This is typically a relay-based device.
  • Retry: A second (or subsequent) attempt by a controller to send an INSTEON signal, usually after the repeater's acknowledgment is not received within the expected time frame.
  • Scene: Multiple devices respond to states saved in memory. For example, a dinner-time lighting scene turns on the dining table light, dims kitchen lights to 10%, turns off backyard lights, and sets the thermostat to 72°.
  • Setup Button: A button on an INSTEON device used to configure or modify its properties.
  • Concurrent Transmission: A method to increase message delivery reliability in a network. When a network node sends a message, all other nodes listening to the message retransmit it simultaneously, based on a general clock, provided the message has not already been retransmitted a maximum number of times. Message propagation becomes stronger because each node adds its energy to the signal, like voices in a choir. Concurrent transmission is much simpler than message routing because there are no routing tables to maintain, and nodes can join the network without any setup procedure.
  • X10: A powerline networking technology for earlier versions. Many INSTEON devices offer backward compatibility with X10 devices by establishing a house and unit code.

Troubleshooting

The LED Lamp does not connect to other INSTEON devices.

Your LED Lamp may be out of range of other INSTEON devices, or a large appliance may be generating electrical interference affecting the INSTEON signal.

Try this:

  • Verify and confirm that your LED Lamp is not connected to a dimmer. If it is, remove the dimmer or change the LED Lamp to a fixture that is not a dimmer.
  • Try placing your LED Lamp in a different location and see if connection can be made. If connection works normally elsewhere in the house, consider adding more INSTEON devices to extend and strengthen your network.
  • Some household appliances such as refrigerators, televisions, and speakers can produce excessive electrical noise. If you have recently added a new electronic device to your home, unplug it and try connecting the LED Lamp again. If it connects normally, place a line noise filter on the appliance causing the problem.

The LED Lamp is slow to respond.

This problem is most likely related to the controller, not your LED Lamp; the control device is likely repeating commands not recognized by an INSTEON device that has been removed from the network. Repeating commands slows down the INSTEON network, causing a delay in the LED Lamp's response.

Try this:

  • Consider if you have removed an INSTEON device from your network that was part of a scene that is slow to respond. If so, these device links must be removed from the controller. Examine the controller's database using software or, if you know which modules have been removed, manually remove their links using the normal disconnection procedure.
  • If you cannot identify the missing devices, perform a factory reset of the controller. This will remove all links from the controller's database, but will also require you to reconfigure scenes and device properties.

The LED Lamp turns on or off by itself.

Most likely, some device located somewhere in the house has been connected to your LED Lamp.

Try this:

  • Since the LED Lamp automatically enters linking mode each time it is activated, it is possible that a device accidentally connects to the LED Lamp during the brief period the Lamp is in linking mode. Software like HouseLinc can be used to examine the LED Lamp's connections to locate the parasitic connection.

The LED Lamp does not turn on when first screwed into a socket.

Your LED Lamp may be deactivated or set to a very low brightness level.

Try this:

  • Connect the LED Lamp to an INSTEON controller, even if it appears deactivated. Double-tap the controller's ON button; the LED Lamp should turn on and reach its maximum brightness. You can now reconnect your LED Lamp to the controller.

I want to perform a factory reset of my LED lamp.

Connect the LED Lamp to an INSTEON controller, even if it appears deactivated. Double-tap the controller's ON button; the LED Lamp should turn on and reach its maximum brightness. You can now reconnect your LED Lamp to the controller.

Try this:

  • Using software like HouseLinc, manually remove all device connections.
