Introduction to FortiManager VM
The FortiManager Security Management appliances provide centralized management for Fortinet Network Security devices, including FortiGate, FortiWiFi, and FortiCarrier. This solution enables network administrators to efficiently group devices into administrative domains (ADOMs), apply policies, and distribute content security/firmware updates. FortiManager is a versatile product offering diverse deployment types, scalability, advanced customization via APIs, and straightforward licensing.
This document specifically details the deployment of a FortiManager virtual appliance within various virtualization server environments. It covers the configuration of virtual hardware settings for the appliance and assumes the reader possesses a solid understanding of virtualization servers.

Licensing
Fortinet offers FortiManager VM with a stackable license model, allowing for expansion as the environment grows. For purchasing information, contact a Fortinet Authorized Reseller or visit http://www.fortinet.com/how_to_buy/.
When configuring your FortiManager VM, ensure hardware settings align with requirements and consider future expansion. Contact your Fortinet Authorized Reseller for more details.
FortiManager VM includes a 15-day trial license. Technical support is not included with the trial. Contact your Fortinet Reseller for a 60-day evaluation license.
Registering Your FortiManager VM
To obtain the FortiManager VM license file, registration with Fortinet Customer Service & Support is required. Follow these steps:
- Log in to the Fortinet Customer Service & Support portal or create a new account.
- Navigate to Asset > Register/Renew.
- Enter the provided license registration code.
- Complete the registration process by providing support contract details, product description, Fortinet Partner information, and the product's IP address. Note that IPv6 is not supported for license validation.
- Review and accept the service contract and product entitlement terms.
After successful registration, the license file can be downloaded from the portal. Instructions for uploading the license file to the FortiManager VM via the GUI are available on page 44.
Downloading the Deployment Package
FortiManager VM deployment packages, including firmware images, are available on the Fortinet Customer Service & Support site. The packages are organized by VM platform, including:
- Amazon Web Service AMI, EC2, and EBS
- Citrix XenServer 6.2
- Linux KVM RedHat 6.5
- Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 and 2012
- Open Source XenServer 4.2.5
- VMware ESX 4.0 and 4.1, VMware ESXi 4.0, 4.1, 5.0, 5.1, 5.5, and 6.0

Firmware images are organized by version, release, and patch. Specific naming conventions apply to each firmware image, tailored to the device model. Release Notes and MIB files can also be downloaded from this directory.
