3. Description of the Device
The appearance of your filter fan unit may differ slightly from the diagrams in this manual, but the basic functionality remains the same.
3.1 Functional Description: The filter fan unit, used with filter louvres, ventilates enclosures, dissipates heat, and protects temperature-sensitive components by introducing ambient air with a lower temperature.
3.1.1 Main Components: The filter fan unit consists of the fan motor, filter housing, plastic louvre with function logo, and filter mat.
3.1.2 Control: It is recommended to use Rittal accessories such as thermostats or temperature controllers for optimal energy efficiency and extended component life. EC fans offer advanced control and monitoring options.
3.1.3 Safety Devices: Fans are equipped with thermal winding protection against overload and overheating. Some models use impedance protection.
3.1.4 Filter Mat: Units are shipped with a pleated filter. Check and replace the filter periodically based on dust conditions.
3.2 Correct Usage: Rittal filter fan units are designed according to the latest technology and safety regulations. Incorrect usage can lead to severe injury or property damage. Always read the documentation and follow maintenance guidelines.
3.3 Scope of Delivery: The unit is delivered as a complete assembly. Check that all parts are present.
4. Installation and Connection
4.1 Choosing the Installation Location:
- Select a location with good ventilation.
- Avoid excessively dusty or humid areas.
- Mount the unit vertically on a flat surface (door or wall).
- Ensure the ambient temperature is below the maximum permissible enclosure temperature.
- Always follow the connection information on the unit's nameplate.
4.2 Installation Notes:
- Check the packaging for any damage.
- Ensure proper sealing of the enclosure (IP54) to prevent unfiltered air ingress.
- Maintain adequate spacing between multiple units for louvre grille operation. Refer to Table 2 for minimum distances between cutouts.
- Ensure airflow from the fan does not interfere with the airflow of electronic components. Maintain recommended distances.
4.3 Mounting the Filter Fan Unit or Filter Louvre:
- Use the provided template to cut the enclosure opening.
- Mount the filter fan unit at the bottom and the filter louvre at the top of the enclosure.
- 4.3.1 Enclosure Cutout: Use the template to mark and cut the opening. Be careful of sharp edges.
- 4.3.2 Mounting the Filter Fan Unit: The unit can be easily latched into the cutout. Ensure the latching hooks are properly engaged. For thicker panels (>2mm), additional screws may be required. For panels >2.5mm, refer to Section 11 for cutout dimensions and screw mounting. Remove the plastic louvre by releasing the hinges to access the mounting points. Reattach the louvre after mounting the fan. Secure the fan with screws for transport. Ensure proper mounting to prevent vibration issues. Accessories can enhance the protection rating (IP55, IP56).
- 4.3.3 Safety Clips: Safety clips can be attached to prevent accidental opening of the plastic louvre, useful for transport and testing.
5. Electrical Wiring
4.4 Electrical Wiring Precautions:
- Follow all national and local electrical codes and regulations. Installation should be performed by qualified electricians.
- Ensure the connection voltage and frequency match the nameplate specifications.
- Use only Rittal genuine spare parts.
- For single-phase and 24V DC fans, install fuses as specified on the nameplate for short-circuit protection.
- For AC power, use fuses or overload protection switches as specified on the nameplate for phase and short-circuit protection.
- Observe the direction of airflow and rotation indicated by arrows on the motor housing. Incorrect rotation can prevent fan startup.
4.4.2 Overvoltage Protection and Voltage Tolerance: The unit does not have overvoltage protection. Consult your supplier for protection against lightning and overvoltage. The supply voltage must remain within ±10% of the rated voltage.
4.4.3 Ground Connection: The ground wire must be connected to the system's ground.
5. Electrical Wiring Implementation:
- Follow the wiring diagram for electrical connections.
- Note: Refer to the nameplate for technical specifications.
- Insert ferrule-terminated connection cables into the spring terminals. Use fuses appropriate for the cable size (e.g., 2x 0.75-2.5 mm² for stranded wire, 2x 1.5-2.5 mm² for fine-stranded wire).
- Caution! If not using ferrule terminals, strip a maximum of 9 mm of insulation from the wires, observing air and creepage distances.
- Note: When using ferrule terminals, ensure the crimped length is 10 mm. For 2.5 mm² stranded wire, use a hexagonal crimp. For JIS 2 sq stranded wire, insertion into the terminal block may be difficult due to IEC specifications.
5.2 Rotating the Connection Area:
If the connection area is difficult to access, it can be rotated by 90°. For units 3238.xxx to 3239.xxx, release the bayonet lock by pulling the tab and rotate the fan housing. For units 3240.xxx to 3244.xxx, press the release button and rotate the fan housing. Re-secure the bayonet lock.
5.3 Changing Airflow Direction:
The standard airflow direction is from outside to inside the enclosure. If you need to change the airflow direction for technical reasons, unlock the bayonet lock, remove the fan housing, rotate it 180°, and reattach it.
6. Starting Operation
The filter fan unit operates automatically when power is supplied. Available voltage specifications include 24 V DC, 115 V AC, 230 V AC, and 400/460 V AC (three-phase).
Note: Units 3237.xxx and EMC filter fan units are typically equipped with a fleece filter.
Note: Use only genuine Rittal filter media for guaranteed protection ratings and airflow.
Note: If using fleece filters, remove and discard the original pleated filter.
Caution: Always replace filters when the fan is stopped. Never insert fingers into the fan. Perform filter replacement only when the unit is de-energized.
Filter replacement should be performed from the outside of the enclosure.
7. Filter Installation and Replacement
The filter fan unit comes standard with a pleated filter to pre-filter larger dust particles and lint from the ambient air.
7.1 Pleated Filter Replacement:
- Release the plastic louvre by pressing the function logo.
- Fold the plastic louvre back approximately 90°.
- Remove the used filter.
- Insert the new pleated filter, ensuring the "Top" marking is oriented correctly (see Figure 14).
- Re-engage the plastic louvre until it clicks into place.
7.2 Fleece Filter Replacement:
- Release the plastic louvre by pressing the function logo.
- Fold the plastic louvre back approximately 90°.
- Remove the used filter.
- Insert the new fleece filter, ensuring the compressed side faces inwards.
- Note: If the airflow direction was changed, the filter installation direction is reversed.
- Re-engage the plastic louvre until it clicks into place.
8. Inspection and Maintenance
Caution: Risk of electric shock! The unit is energized. Always disconnect power before opening. Ensure power cannot be accidentally switched on.
The fans are maintenance-free with long-life bearings. Regular cleaning with a vacuum cleaner or compressed air is recommended. For stubborn dirt, use a water-based detergent.
Caution: Fire hazard! Do not use flammable liquids for cleaning.
Maintenance Steps:
- Check for dirt accumulation. Replace filters if dirty.
- Clean fan louvres if dirty.
- Check fan noise levels.
- Clean with compressed air.
9. Storage and Disposal
Note: Risk of damage! Store the filter fan unit between -30°C and +70°C.
Disposal can be handled by Rittal. Please contact us for details.
