Important Warnings
- This component is an electrical device that must be installed correctly to ensure proper operation and to prevent shock or fire. Read and follow all installation instructions carefully.
- To minimize the danger of fire from sustained electrical arcing if the heating cable is damaged or improperly installed, and to comply with nVent, agency certifications, and national electrical codes, ground fault equipment protection must be used. Arcing may not be stopped by conventional circuit breakers.
- Bus wires will short if they contact each other. Keep bus wires separated.
- Keep components and heating cable ends dry before and during installation.
- The black heating cable core is conductive and can short. It must be properly insulated and kept dry.
- Component approvals and performance are based on the use of nVent-specified parts only. Do not use substitute parts or vinyl electrical tape.
- Leave these instructions with the end user for reference and future use.
General Installation Instructions
Step 1: Bracket Attachment
Using the plastic cable ties, attach the mounting bracket to the pipe. Note: For roof-mounted applications, follow steps 3 through 9 (pages 2-4), then refer to "Roof Installation" on page 4. Do not install the end seal where it can be immersed in water.
Step 2: Connector Assembly
For the RayClic-LE lighted end seal, fold up the four outer snaps on the connector. Position the connector over the snaps on the bracket and press down until it engages.
Step 3: Service Loops and Cable Preparation
Allow enough extra heating cable to make service loops as required. Ensure the end of the heating cable is cut cleanly.
Step 4: Scoring the Outer Jacket
Score around and down the outer jacket of the heating cable approximately 3 1/8 inches from the end. Do not cut through the metal braid or the inner jacket.
Step 5: Removing Outer Jacket and Applying Clip
Remove the outer jacket. Place the metal clip over the base of the exposed braid.
Step 6A: HWAT Only - Braid and Wrap Preparation
Using wire cutters, cut away 1 inch of the braid. Pull the exposed braid back over the metal clip. Using wire cutters, cut away the aluminum wrap.
Step 6B: IceStop and XL-Trace Edge Only - Braid Preparation
Pull the exposed braid back over the metal clip.
Step 7: Lubrication
Apply a small amount of lubricant to the jacket surface near the end of the cable. Avoid using large amounts of lubricant on the exposed end of the cable.
Step 8: Inserting Cable into Connector
Insert the prepared heating cable end into the connector. Push until the heating cable is fully inserted and the end is visible through the opening in the connection cover plate. Note: RayClic connection kits are designed to be installed only once; the heating cable cannot be removed once installed.
Step 9: Tightening Connection Screws
Tighten the two connection screws securely, alternating between them as you tighten. Ensure the metal top surface is at the same height as the inner clear plastic module. WARNING: Fire hazard. Loose screws can cause excessive heating. Be sure screws are fully tightened.
Step 10: Closing Lid and Finalizing
Close the lid and snap the lever shut. Do not force the lid closed; if it does not close, check the connection to ensure all screws are fully tightened. Tighten the nuts on the heating cable entries until the grommets are compressed.
Roof Installation
Step 1: Mount Bracket
Mount the flat (wall mounting) bracket under eaves by installing screws through the center holes. Do not mount in a gutter or where it may be immersed in water.
Step 2: Position Clips
Position attachment clips on the mounting bracket as shown.
Step 3: Connect Heating Cable
Connect the heating cable as detailed in general steps 3 through 9 (pages 2-4).
Step 4: Attach Connector and Finalize
Attach the connector to the mounting bracket by pressing until it snaps in place. Complete the heating cable installation and install a drip loop as shown. Protect the heating cable from sharp edges.
Troubleshooting Guide
Problem: Braid clips are missing.
Solution: The braid clips are attached to the cardboard packing insert under the lid. They are essential for ensuring a ground connection. If clips are missing or lost, call nVent at (800) 545-6258.
Problem: Mounting bracket is missing.
Solution: A pipe mounting bracket is supplied with the Power Connection, Powered Splice, Powered Tee, and Lighted End Seal kits. A wall mounting bracket or additional pipe mounting bracket may be ordered using catalog numbers listed under "Optional Accessories" on the front page when placing an order.
Problem: Connector does not snap onto bracket.
Solution: The bracket has two sets of attachment clips. Fold up the four outer clips for the Power Connection and Lighted End Seal kit. Fold up only the center clips for the Powered Splice and Powered Tee kits.
Problem: Heating cable type not mentioned.
Solution: nVent RAYCHEM RayClic connection kits are approved for use only with HWAT, XL-Trace Edge, and IceStop heating cables. Do not use with other heating cables.
Problem: Braid clip does not fit.
Solution: Be sure the clip is installed on the metal braid, not on the outer jacket.
Problem: Heating cable does not have aluminum wrap.
Solution: Only HWAT heating cables have aluminum wrap under the braid. Skip the aluminum wrap removal step for XL-Trace Edge and IceStop heating cables.
Problem: Heating cable cannot be inserted into connector.
Solution: Check for the following: Apply lubricant to the heating cable primary (white) jacket. Ensure outer jacket strip length is 3 1/8 inches. Confirm braid clip is installed on the metal braid, not the outer jacket. Verify braid is pulled back over the braid clip. For HWAT, confirm 1 inch of braid is removed. Ensure the sealing nut is loose (but not removed). Check that connection screws are loose.
Problem: Lid does not close.
Solution: Be sure all screws are fully tightened before closing the lid.
Problem: Heating cable cannot be removed.
Solution: The power connection and end seal are designed for single installation; the heating cable cannot be removed once installed. Additional nVent RAYCHEM RayClic-E and RayClic-LE end seals can be ordered from nVent.
Problem: Light does not come on.
Solution: Verify there is voltage present. Verify the cable guide is screwed down completely. If the light still does not function, the RayClic-LE cannot be repaired and must be replaced.
