Chapter 1: Before You Start

The Synology NAS SA3400 is an enterprise server comprising hardware and the DiskStation Manager (DSM) operating system. This manual guides users through hardware components, setup procedures, system maintenance, and initial troubleshooting.

Safety Instructions

Keep the product away from direct sunlight and chemicals. Avoid abrupt changes in temperature or humidity. Always place the product upright. Do not place near liquids. Unplug the power cord before cleaning; wipe with damp paper towels, avoiding chemical or aerosol cleaners. To prevent falls, do not place on unstable surfaces. Ensure the power cord uses the correct and stable AC voltage. Disconnect all power cords to remove all electrical current. Risk of explosion if the battery is replaced with an incorrect type; dispose of used batteries appropriately.

Chapter 2: Hardware Setup

Tools and Parts for Component Installation

Warning: Installing a drive with existing data will format and erase all data. Back up important data before installation.

Warning: Mounting the Synology NAS on a cabinet before installing drives is recommended due to the unit's weight.

Install Drives

  1. Open the drive tray: Press the small button on the left side of the drive tray handle to release it. Pull the handle out.
  2. Install drives:
    • For 3.5" drives: Place the drive in the tray. Turn the tray upside down and secure the drive with screws ? in the indicated spots.
    • For 2.5" drives: Place the drive in the tray. Turn the tray upside down and secure the drive with screws ? in the indicated spots.
  3. Insert the loaded drive tray: Push the tray fully into the empty drive bay.
  4. Secure the drive tray: Push the handle inward.
  5. Lock the drive tray: Push the switch on the drive tray handle to the left.
  6. Repeat steps for all prepared drives.

Note: Installing drives of the same size is suggested for optimal capacity usage when creating RAID volumes.

Drives are numbered sequentially in the bays.

Install Memory Modules

Use only genuine Synology memory modules for system compatibility and reliability. Install modules into the slots as indicated.

Note: For multi-module configurations, all modules must be identical and share the same model number.

To install a RAM module:

  1. Shut down the SA3400 and disconnect all cables.
  2. Remove the screw ? on the back of the SA3400. Pull off the rear top cover.
  3. Insert the new memory module:
    • Push the retaining clips on the slot outwards.
    • Align the notch on the module's gold edge with the notch in the slot.
    • Push down firmly and evenly. The clips will snap into place.

    Note: Handle the module by its edges; do not touch the gold connectors.

  4. Replace the rear top cover by aligning the hexagons and pushing it back. Fasten the screw ? removed in step 2.

To verify memory recognition: Log in to DSM as admin and check Total Physical Memory in Control Panel > Info Center.

To remove a RAM Module:

  1. Follow steps 1 and 2 above to shut down, disconnect cables, and remove the top cover.
  2. Cut any cable tie securing the module.
  3. Disengage retaining clips by pushing them outwards; the module will pop out.
  4. Replace the top cover as described in step 4 of the installation process.

Install PCle Add-in Cards

The SA3400 has two PCIe slots ? for optional add-in cards, such as network interface cards.

To install network interface cards:

  1. Shut down the SA3400 and disconnect all cables.
  2. Open the SA3400 by following step 2 of the "Install Memory Modules" section.
  3. Install the network interface card:
    • Remove the screw ? securing the expansion slot's cover.
    • Lift off the expansion slot's cover.
    • Align the card's connector with the expansion slot and insert it. Ensure it is fully inserted.
    • Replace and fasten the screw ? to secure the card.
  4. Repeat step 3 for the second card if applicable.
  5. Replace the rear top cover as described in step 4 of the "Install Memory Modules" section.

Install and Remove Rail Kits

This section uses the RKS1317 rail kit as an example. Refer to the rail kit's Quick Installation Guide for specific details.

To install the rail kit:

  1. Attach the rail kit to the rack: Connect the rear end of the assembly to the rack. Slide the front latch outwards ➡️ and insert the brackets into rack holes.
  2. Extend the inner rail from the assembly.
  3. Align the inner rail's fixing holes with the chassis sides and slide backward to attach.
  4. With assistance, carefully align the inner rail to the outer rail assembly.
  5. Push the chassis towards the rack. Use provided cage nuts and screws ? to secure the chassis to the rack if needed.

To remove the rail kit:

  1. To remove the chassis from the rack, hold the rail kit release tabs ➡️ on the ear holders and pull the chassis out from the rack.
  2. With assistance, carefully remove the chassis. Slide forward to detach the inner rail from the chassis.

Expansion Unit Deployment and Topology

The SA3400 supports RX1217sas (12-bay) and RX2417sas (24-bay) expansion units for storage expansion.

To connect RX1217sas/RX2417sas with SA3400:

  1. Connect one end of the expansion cable to the SAS OUT port ? of the SA3400 and the other to the SAS IN port of the expansion unit. Ensure the release band orientation is correct for both connections.
  2. Connect power cords ⚡ to the expansion unit and power outlets. The expansion unit powers on automatically.
  3. Note: The expansion unit has redundant power supplies; connecting two cords is recommended.

    Important: Do not remove the expansion cable while the host device is powered on to prevent data loss.

  4. Press the power button ? on the SA3400. The expansion unit ID will be displayed sequentially on the back panel.

Note: Additional expansion units can be connected following the same steps.

Start up Your Synology NAS

  1. Connect power cords ⚡ to the SA3400's power ports and to power outlets.
  2. Connect at least one LAN cable ? to a LAN port and to your network switch, router, or hub.
  3. Press the power button ? to turn on the SA3400.

Your Synology NAS is now online and detectable on the network.

1 Try restarting the NAS, re-inserting the drive, or using the drive manufacturer's diagnostic tool. If logged into DSM, run the S.M.A.R.T. test. Contact Synology Technical Support for help if the problem persists.

Chapter 3: System Maintenance

Replace System Fan

If a system fan malfunctions, follow these steps:

  1. Press the small buttons on the sides of the SA3400.
  2. Lift to remove the fan cover.
  3. Fans are numbered. Find the malfunctioning fan and lift it upward to remove.
  4. Prepare a new fan and slide it into the SA3400, ensuring proper alignment.

Replace Power Supply Unit (PSU)

If a PSU or its fan malfunctions, follow these steps:

  1. Unplug the power cord ⚡ from the PSU to be replaced. (Press the Beep Off button ? to silence any beeping sound ?).
  2. Push the PSU lever at the back panel in the indicated direction.
  3. Pull out the PSU from the SA3400.
  4. Prepare a new PSU and push it back into the slot until it clicks.

Chapter 4: Install DSM on Synology NAS

After hardware setup, install DiskStation Manager (DSM), Synology's browser-based operating system, on your SA3400.

Install DSM with Web Assistant

The SA3400 includes Web Assistant to download and install the latest DSM version from the Internet.

  1. Power on ? your SA3400.
  2. On a computer connected to the same network, open a web browser.
  3. Enter either find.synology.com or synologynas:5000 in the address bar.
  4. Web Assistant will launch, search for the Synology NAS, and display its status as "Not Installed".
  5. Click "Connect" and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup.

Notes:

If the installation process is interrupted, log in to DSM as 'admin' (default) with a blank password.
