Appearance

Each Deco unit features an LED indicator that changes color based on its status. A DSL LED indicates DSL synchronization status. It also has four RJ-45 Ethernet ports, one DSL port, a power slot, and a Reset button.

LED Status Indicators:

  • Yellow Pulse: Deco is resetting.
  • Yellow Solid: Deco is starting up.
  • Blue Pulse: Deco is ready for setup or WPS is in progress.
  • Blue Solid: Deco is setting up.
  • Green Pulse: Deco is upgrading firmware.
  • Green Solid: Deco is registered and functioning correctly.
  • Red Pulse: Deco is disconnected from the main Deco.
  • Red Solid: Deco has an issue.

DSL LED Status:

  • On: DSL port connected, DSL synchronization complete.
  • Pulsing: DSL synchronization in progress.
  • Off: DSL port disconnected or synchronization failed.

Ports and Buttons:

  • DSL Port: Connects the Deco to the internet via a phone cable, splitter, or phone jack.
  • Gigabit Ethernet Ports: Connects to a modem, Ethernet outlet, or other internet services.
  • Power Slot: Connects the Deco to a power source via the provided adapter.
  • Reset Button: Press and release within 1 second to reset Deco to factory default settings. A pulsing yellow to solid yellow light indicates a successful reset.

Before You Start

You can set up your Deco as either a DSL modem router or a wireless router to suit your networking needs.

DSL Modem Router Mode:

In this mode, the Deco connects to the internet via a phone cable. Follow the setup guide for DSL Modem Router mode.

Wireless Router Mode:

In this mode, the Deco connects to the internet via an Ethernet cable. Follow the setup guide for Wireless Router mode.

Set Up Your Deco as A DSL Modem Router

The Deco app provides an intuitive setup process for getting your units online and devices connected.

Step 1: Download and install the Deco app

Scan the QR code or download the app from Google Play or the App Store onto your Android or iOS smartphone or tablet.

Step 2: Log in with TP-Link ID

Open the app and log in with your TP-Link ID. If you don't have one, sign up first. Use the 'Forgot Password?' option if needed.

Step 3: Identify your Deco

Choose your Deco model from the displayed options (e.g., X Series: X20, X60, X20-4G, X20-DSL; M Series: M5, M4/M3, M9 Plus).

Step 4: Choose an operation mode

Select 'DSL Modem Router' mode.

Step 5: Plug in and power on Deco

Connect your Deco to the DSL splitter or phone jack using the provided phone cable, then power on the Deco.

Step 6: Connect to the Deco's Wi-Fi

Wait for the Wi-Fi Signal LED to pulse blue. Then, connect your phone/tablet to the Deco's Wi-Fi using the default SSID found on the product label.

Step 7: Select a location

Choose a location for the Deco (e.g., Bedroom, Hallway, Kitchen). You can create a custom location name if needed.

Step 8: Select your ISP

Choose your region and Internet Service Provider (ISP). Select 'Other' if your ISP is not listed.

Step 9: Set up internet connection

Select the internet connection type and enter the VLAN ID if required. Contact your ISP if unsure.

Step 10: Create your Wi-Fi network

Set a network name (SSID) and a password (minimum 8 characters, recommended to use a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols).

Step 11: Connect to your Wi-Fi network

Connect your phone/tablet to the newly created Deco Wi-Fi network.

Step 12: Setup complete

Your Deco network is now active. Connect all your devices. You can add more Deco units to expand Wi-Fi coverage.

Set Up Your Deco as A Wireless Router

The Deco app simplifies the setup process for your Deco units and connected devices.

Step 1: Download and install the Deco app

Download the Deco app from Google Play or the App Store and install it on your smartphone or tablet.

Step 2: Log in with TP-Link ID

Log in to the app using your TP-Link ID. Sign up if you do not have an account. Use the 'Forgot Password?' option if necessary.

Step 3: Identify your Deco

Select your Deco model from the available options (e.g., X20, X60, X20-4G, X20-DSL).

Step 4: Choose an operation mode

Select 'Wireless Router' mode.

Step 5: Plug in and power on Deco

Power off your modem, connect your Deco to the modem's LAN port using an Ethernet cable, and then power on both devices. If no modem is available, connect directly to the Ethernet outlet.

Step 6: Connect to the Deco's Wi-Fi

Wait for the Wi-Fi Signal LED to pulse blue. Connect your phone/tablet to the Deco's Wi-Fi using the default SSID on the product label.

Step 7: Select a location

Assign a location to your Deco, such as 'Bedroom' or 'Living Room', or create a custom name.

Step 8: Set up internet connection

Choose your internet connection type and enter the required information. Consult your ISP if you are unsure.

Step 9: Create your Wi-Fi network

Set a network name (SSID) and a strong password for your Wi-Fi network.

Step 10: Connect to your Wi-Fi network

Connect your phone/tablet to the new Deco Wi-Fi network.

Step 11: Setup complete

Your Deco network is ready. Connect all your devices. Additional Deco units can be added to enhance Wi-Fi coverage.

Add More Decos

Expand your Wi-Fi coverage and manage your network conveniently by adding more Deco units via the Deco app. In the Overview screen, tap the add icon, select your Deco model, and follow the app instructions. Added Deco units will appear in the Overview screen.

Dashboard

The Deco app dashboard provides an overview of your network status. You can customize your home network with TP-Link HomeShield features for enhanced security and set up various advanced features.

  • Tap the 'Overview' icon for network status.
  • Tap the 'HomeShield' icon for enhanced security features.
  • Tap the 'More' icon for additional features.

Check Deco Status

The Overview screen allows you to check the working status of all Decos, view individual Deco details, and change Deco locations or names.

  • Tap the 'Overview' icon to see the status of all Decos.
  • Tap on a specific Deco unit to view its details.
  • You can also change or customize the location/name of a Deco from its detail screen.

Set Main Deco

You can replace the main Deco with a satellite Deco without reconfiguring the entire network. In the Overview screen, tap the menu icon, select 'Set Main Deco', then choose a satellite Deco and follow the app instructions. For DSL Deco, ensure it's connected to the phone jack or DSL splitter. For 4G/5G Deco, insert a SIM card.

Manage Connected Devices

View the status and details of connected devices, and manage their settings. Tap on a client to see details. Tap the settings icon to manage device settings. Tap 'Belongs to' to create a profile for a device and manage its online activities.

Remove/Reboot Deco

You can easily remove or reboot your Deco units through the Deco app. Removing a Deco resets it to factory default settings. Alternatively, press the Reset button on the Deco for 1 second to perform a quick factory reset.

  • In the Overview screen, tap the menu icon.
  • Select a Deco unit.
  • Tap the option to 'Remove' or 'Reboot' the Deco.
  • If the LED does not turn blue after attempting removal, use the physical Reset button.

Create A New Network

The Deco app allows you to create and manage multiple Deco networks linked to your TP-Link ID. You can also manage networks for family or friends.

Method 1: From the Overview page

Tap the menu icon, then 'Create New Network', and follow the app instructions.

Method 2: From the Menu page

Tap the menu icon, navigate to 'CREATE NEW NETWORK', and follow the app instructions.

Delete A Network

You can delete a Deco network if it is no longer needed. Deleting a network will reset all Decos within it to factory default settings. In the Overview screen, tap the menu icon, then select 'Delete'.

HomeShield

TP-Link HomeShield offers basic (free) and Pro (paid) features to enhance your home network's security and performance. It helps protect against malicious attacks, manage family online activities, and prioritize devices.

  • Weekly/Monthly Reports: Review usage statistics, security threats, and visited content.
  • HomeShield Pro Subscription: Upgrade for advanced features.
  • Scan: Regularly checks your network for potential risks.
  • Real-Time Protection (Pro users only): Blocks malicious websites, protects against external attacks, prevents infected devices from sending data, and monitors IoT devices.
  • Parental Controls: Create profiles for family members, set internet access times, block content, and pause internet access.
  • QoS: Prioritize specific devices for certain durations, like a laptop during a video call.

Wi-Fi Settings

You can change your main network's name (SSID) and password at any time. You can also share your network details easily with family and friends. Access Wi-Fi settings via the app menu.

Guest Network

Create and share a separate network for guests to maintain the security and privacy of your main network. Access Wi-Fi settings, enable 'Guest Network', and set a Wi-Fi name and password for the guest network. You can then share this network.

Blacklist

Compile a blacklist to prevent unauthorized devices from accessing your network, ensuring the safety of your personal information. Access the Blacklist feature via the app menu, then tap the add icon to add clients or devices to the blacklist.

Upgrade Your Deco

Keep your Deco system performing optimally by updating the firmware. The Deco app will prompt you when an update is available. Follow the app instructions to download and install the latest firmware.

WPS

WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) allows quick and secure connection of clients to your network with a single tap, without needing to enter a password. Activate WPS in the Deco app and on your client device.

Managers

Add friends and family members as managers to help manage your network. Each manager needs their own TP-Link ID. Access the 'Managers' section via the app menu, and follow the instructions to add a manager.

Advanced Features

The Advanced menu provides additional features that may vary depending on your Deco's working mode (e.g., DSL Modem Router or Access Point).
