Important Safety Information
Danger: Never immerse the machine in water or any other liquid.
Warning:
- Check if the voltage indicated on the bottom of the machine corresponds to the local mains voltage before connecting.
- Connect the machine to an earthed wall socket.
- If the mains cord is damaged, it must be replaced by Philips, an authorized service center, or similarly qualified persons to avoid hazards.
- Do not use the machine if the plug, cord, or machine itself is damaged.
- This machine can be used by children aged 8 and above, and persons with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, if supervised or instructed on safe use and aware of the hazards.
- Cleaning and user maintenance should not be done by children unless they are older than 8 and supervised.
- Keep the machine, accessories, and cord out of reach of children under 8 years old.
- Children shall not play with the machine.
- Only use this appliance for its intended purpose to avoid potential hazard or injury.
Caution:
- Always return the machine to a Philips authorized service center for examination or repair. Do not attempt self-repair, as it invalidates the warranty.
- After unpacking, never put the Senseo machine on its side; always keep it upright, even during transport.
- Never use normal ground coffee or torn pods in the pod holder, as this will cause it to become blocked.
- Do not use the machine with a transformer, as this could cause hazardous situations.
- Always place the machine on a flat and stable surface.
- Do not place the machine on a hotplate or directly next to a hot oven, heater, or similar heat source.
- Do not place the machine in a cabinet when in use.
- Never let the machine operate unattended.
- Do not use the machine at altitudes higher than 1250 meters above sea level.
- Never pour any liquid other than clean cold water into the water reservoir.
- Never flush the machine or let it brew coffee when the spout is not in place.
- Flush the coffee machine with fresh water before first use. This fills the system with water, essential for proper operation.
- Do not use the machine at temperatures below 0°C. Water left in the machine may freeze and cause damage.
- Do not use the machine with water softeners based on sodium exchange.
- Descale your machine regularly. The machine indicates when descaling is needed. Failure to do so will cause the machine to stop working properly, and repair will not be covered by warranty.
- Never use a descaling agent based on mineral acids (e.g., sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid, sulphamic acid, acetic acid/vinegar), as these may damage your coffee machine.
- The machine is intended for normal household use only. It is not intended for use in staff kitchens, offices, farms, or other work environments, nor for use by clients in hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts, or other residential environments.
Compliance with Standards
This machine complies with applicable standards and regulations regarding exposure to electromagnetic fields.
The energy consumption of this machine in off mode is less than 0.5 Watt, complying with European Directive 2009/125/EC for energy-using products.
Frost-free storage: Only use and store the machine in a frost-free place.

The light in the button I pressed flashes quickly. | Fill the water reservoir with water. The float may be stuck; empty and shake the reservoir, then clean it with hot water and detergent or in the dishwasher. |

The coffee volume changed. | Check if the Intensity Plus slide is set to the preferred volume. The sieve in the pod holder may be clogged; unclog it with a washing-up brush. For CSA250, CSA240: Reset the volume settings to factory settings. |

Usage Instructions

Flushing before first use:
- Fill the water reservoir with fresh cold tap water.
- Place the water reservoir back onto the machine.
- Remove the drip tray.
- Place a bowl under the coffee spout.
- Ensure a pod holder, without pods, is in place.
- Close the lid and lock the lever.
- Plug the machine into an earthed wall socket.
- Press the 1-cup and 2-cup buttons simultaneously to start flushing.
- During flushing, cold water will come out of the coffee spout.
- The machine switches off automatically when flushing is finished.
Caution: If you do not flush the machine before first use, your first coffee cup may overflow with cold water.
Brewing coffee:
- Fill the water reservoir with fresh cold tap water.
- Open the lid.
- For one cup: place the 1-cup pod holder with one coffee pod. For two cups: place the 2-cup pod holder with two coffee pods.
- Place the pod(s) correctly in the center of the pod holder, convex side down. Press lightly.
- Close the lid and lock the lever.
- Place one or two cups under the spout openings.
- Adjust the coffee spout height to the cup size.
- Use the Intensity Plus slide to select your desired recipe:
- Top position: Classic smooth Senseo
- Middle position: Intense Senseo
- Bottom position: Espresso
- Press the 1-cup button for one cup or the 2-cup button for two cups.
Direct Start Function: Press a button (1-cup or 2-cup) to start heating and brewing coffee. The button flashes, the machine heats up, brews, and then switches off automatically to save energy.
Warning: Ensure the lid is closed properly and the lever is locked before brewing.
Fresh Cold Water: Use fresh cold water daily. If the machine has not been used for 1 day, flush it with fresh cold water before reuse. To flush: fill the reservoir with fresh cold water, place 2 cups under the spout, and brew coffee twice without a pod.
Memo Function (CSA250 and CSA240 models only): Adjust and save coffee volume for each Intensity Plus setting.
- Set the Intensity Plus slide to the desired recipe position.
- Press and hold the 1-cup button for 5 seconds until its light flashes rapidly.
- The 1-cup button flashes while the machine heats (60-90 seconds) and brews.
- When the desired volume is reached, press the 1-cup button again. It flashes quickly to confirm the setting is saved.
Note: Maximum programmable volume is 145 ml, minimum is 25 ml.
Resetting Coffee Volumes to Factory Settings (CSA250 and CSA240 models only):
- Press and hold the 2-cup button for 5 seconds.
- Release the 2-cup button when the 1-cup and 2-cup buttons start flashing. All recipe volumes are now reset to factory defaults.
Cleaning:
- Remove the coffee spout by pressing the buttons on both sides.
- Disassemble the coffee spout by pressing the buttons and separating the parts.
- Clean pod holders regularly with hot water, detergent, and a brush to prevent clogging.
- Wash all detachable parts with hot water and detergent, or in the dishwasher.
- Clean the exterior with a soft, damp cloth.
Note: Never use scouring pads, abrasive cleaners, or aggressive liquids (e.g., petrol, acetone) for cleaning.
Descaling the Senseo:
When the CALC light illuminates, descaling is necessary to prolong the machine's life. The procedure involves 4 cycles.
Prepare Descaling:
- Pour half a bottle of Senseo descaler into the empty water reservoir.
- Fill the reservoir with fresh cold tap water and replace it.
- Remove the drip tray and place a bowl under the coffee spout.
- Place the 1-cup pod holder with a used coffee pod or a thin descaling filter in the machine.
- Close the lid and lock the lever.
Start First Descaling Cycle:
- Press and hold both the 1-cup and 2-cup buttons for 5 seconds to start. Release when the CALC light illuminates.
- The CALC, 1-cup, and 2-cup lights indicate the cycle is in progress. Descaling solution will flow out intermittently.
- When the cycle is complete, the 1-cup button and CALC light flash.
- Empty the bowl.
Start Second Descaling Cycle:
- Repeat steps 1-3.
- Replace the 1-cup pod holder with the 2-cup pod holder, insert a used pod or thick descaling filter, close the lid, and lock the lever.
- Press the 1-cup button to start the second cycle.
- Lights indicate the cycle is in progress. Descaling solution flows intermittently.
- When the cycle is complete, the 1-cup button and CALC light flash.
- Remove the used pod or descaling filter.
Start First Rinsing Cycle:
- Rinse the water reservoir with fresh water.
- Fill the reservoir with fresh water and replace it.
- Place an empty bowl under the coffee spout.
- Press the 1-cup button to start the rinsing cycle.
- Lights indicate the cycle is in progress. Water flows intermittently.
- When the cycle is complete, the 1-cup button and CALC light flash.
Start Second Rinsing Cycle:
- Repeat steps 16-21. When finished, the CALC light goes out, and the machine switches off.
Note: If the machine was not used within 12 hours after descaling, an additional flush is needed before brewing new coffee. For more information on descaling, visit www.philips.com/descale-senseo.
