JBL BAR 500 User Manual

Brand: JBL by HARMAN

IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

Verify Mains Voltage Before Use: The JBL BAR 500 (soundbar and subwoofer) is designed for AC 100-240V, 50/60Hz alternating current. Connecting to a line voltage other than that for which your product is intended can create a safety hazard and damage the unit. If you have any questions about the voltage requirements for your specific model or about the mains voltage in your area, contact your dealer or a customer service representative before plugging the unit into a wall outlet.

Do Not Use Extension Cords: To prevent safety risks, use only the supplied mains cord with your unit. JBL does not recommend the use of extension cords with this product. As with all electrical appliances, do not run mains cords under carpets or carpeting, or place heavy objects on them. Damaged mains cords must be replaced immediately with a cord that meets factory specifications by an authorized service center.

Handle the Mains Cord With Care: To disconnect the mains cord from a mains socket, always pull the plug, never the cable. If you do not intend to use your speaker for a long period, unplug the plug from the mains socket.

Do Not Open the Casing: This product contains no user-serviceable components. Opening the casing may present an electric shock hazard, and any modification to the product will void your warranty. If water accidentally enters the unit, unplug it from the mains power immediately and consult an authorized service center.

5. CONNECTIONS

5.1 Connecting to Your TV and Digital Devices

For audio playback through the soundbar, connect it to your TV using the supplied HDMI cable or an optical cable (sold separately). An HDMI connection supports digital audio and video over a single connection. HDMI connectivity is the best option for your soundbar.

5.1.1 TV (HDMI ARC / eARC)

(Recommended connection for the best Dolby Atmos experience.)

[Diagram showing connection of soundbar to TV via HDMI ARC/eARC, and to a digital device via HDMI. Ports labeled: HDMI (ARC), HDMI OUT (TV ARC/TV eARC), HDMI IN.]

  1. Connect the soundbar to your TV's HDMI IN (ARC / eARC) connector using the supplied HDMI cable.
  2. On your TV, ensure HDMI-CEC and HDMI ARC are enabled. Refer to your TV's user manual for more information.
  3. Use an HDMI cable (V2.0 or later) to connect the soundbar to your digital device, such as a set-top box, DVD/Blu-ray player, or game console.
  4. On your digital device, ensure HDMI-CEC is enabled. Refer to your digital device's user manual for more information.
  5. On your digital device, select "Bitstream" or "Raw Data" in the audio output settings for the best Dolby Atmos experience.
  6. To play audio from a digital device connected to the soundbar, select HDMI on the remote control.

NOTES: If your TV does not support HDMI eARC, ensure you connect your digital device via the soundbar's HDMI IN connector instead of your TV. Otherwise, Dolby Atmos information may not pass from the TV's HDMI (ARC) connectors to the soundbar.

  • Restore the soundbar to factory settings by pressing and holding the [source button], [plus button], and [minus button] on the soundbar for more than 5 seconds.

Distorted sound or echo

Audio and video out of sync

  • Enable the audio sync feature to synchronize audio and video (see "8.1 Audio Sync").

No Dolby Atmos height sound effects

  • If your TV only supports HDMI ARC, ensure you have connected your digital device to the soundbar via its HDMI IN connector (see "5.1.1 TV (HDMI ARC / eARC)").
  • Enjoy Dolby Atmos sound effects when watching movies from the TV/HDMI source. When streaming audio via Bluetooth or streaming apps (via Chromecast built-in, AirPlay, or Alexa), Dolby Atmos is not supported.

Bluetooth

A device cannot connect to the soundbar.

  • Check if the Bluetooth function of the device is enabled.
  • If the soundbar has been paired with another Bluetooth device, reset Bluetooth (see "5.2.3 Connecting Another Bluetooth Device").
  • If your Bluetooth device has already been paired with the soundbar, reset Bluetooth on the soundbar, forget the soundbar on the Bluetooth device, and then re-pair the Bluetooth device and the soundbar (see "5.2.3 Connecting Another Bluetooth Device").

  • If you encounter difficulties configuring Wi-Fi, press the [plus button] and [minus button] on the soundbar until "SETUP WIFI" is displayed.

Playback

AirPlay cannot find the soundbar as an AirPlay speaker for music streaming.
