Initial Setup
- Install the batteries into the battery compartment located on the back of the doorbell.
- Insert the small end of the provided USB-C cable into the USB-C port on the doorbell. Connect the other end to a USB power adapter and plug it into an outlet to charge the doorbell battery. It is recommended to keep the doorbell charging while connecting it to the Wi-Fi router and to fully charge it before outdoor installation.
NOTE: With the doorbell not attached to the mount, you can insert the USB Type-C cable into the doorbell. (Power Adapter not included)
How to Install Your Doorbell
To begin viewing your camera, add it to the Night Owl app or a compatible recorder. For more detailed setup steps, follow the instructions within the app.
Preparing the Doorbell for Install
Test the Wi-Fi signal strength at the desired installation location. The signal strength of the Wi-Fi router should be checked by connecting your cell phone to the Wi-Fi. A minimum of 2 bars of signal is required (4 bars is full).
NOTE: Please complete the doorbell signal test before proceeding with the installation.
Connect the Doorbell to a Wi-Fi Router
Step 1: With the doorbell not connected to the mounting plate, use the reset pin to press and hold the Reset button on the side of the doorbell for 2 seconds to power it on. When you hear the prompt "Camera is in pairing mode," the doorbell is in pairing mode and the LED light flashes slowly.
Step 2: Open the Night Owl Protect app.
Step 3: Tap on "Add New" (iOS) or "+" (Android).
Step 4: Scan the QR code on the side of the doorbell.
Step 5: Follow the on-screen display to add the Doorbell step by step.
NOTE: Please fully charge the doorbell before installation. The Router's security protocol MUST be set to WPA/WPA2 (strong security).
Replacing the Existing Wired Doorbell
- Test by pressing the existing doorbell button. If the existing doorbell chime does not ring, your existing doorbell wiring may be defective. Consult an electrician to repair the wiring.
- Turn off the power at the circuit breaker. IMPORTANT: Always be careful when handling electrical wires. If you are not comfortable installing them yourself, contact a qualified electrician.
- Remove the old doorbell.
NOTE: When choosing battery power for your doorbell (no wires needed) and replacing an older wired model, use the included Wire Nuts to safely insulate the old wires.
Doorbell Installation
- Choose a mounting location. The recommended mounting height is 48 inches (1.2 m) from the ground.
- If mounting on a hard surface (brick, concrete, stucco), use a 15/64" (6mm) drill bit to drill two holes according to the mounting template screw hole guides.
NOTE: A power drill, 15/64" (6mm) drill bit, mounting bracket, 15° mounting wedge (optional), and screw pack are required for mounting installation.
Securing the Mounting Bracket
Insert the provided anchors and then secure the mounting bracket to the wall using the provided long screws.
For Brick, Concrete or Stucco Walls: Drill holes, insert anchors, and secure bracket with screws.
For Wooden Walls: No drilling is required; use a screwdriver to install directly.
Attaching the Doorbell
Align the bottom of the doorbell with the mount and then grab the top of the Doorbell. Press the doorbell towards the mount until it clicks into place.
Wired Installation
If you are installing with existing wiring:
- Connect the wires to the terminals on the back of the doorbell and tighten the terminal screws. The wires can be connected to any terminal.
NOTE: When AC power is connected, you no longer need to worry about the doorbell battery running out of power, as the AC will continuously charge it.
Finalizing Wired Installation
Align the bottom of the doorbell with the mount and then grab the top of the Doorbell. Press the doorbell towards the mount until it clicks into place.
Switch the main circuit breaker back on to restore power to the doorbell.
NOTE: The doorbell supports AC 8 ~ 24V, 10 ~ 30VA. Please check if your power transformer meets these requirements before installation.
