Introduction
This document provides essential information for the safe handling and proper use of the IMPAQ™ battery charger(s). It contains a global system specification, safety measures, codes of conduct, a guide for commissioning, and recommended maintenance. This document should be kept and made available to users who work with and are responsible for the battery charger. All users are responsible for ensuring that all system applications are adequate and safe, based on the conditions foreseen or encountered during operation.
This owner's manual contains important safety instructions. Read and understand all instructions before installing, handling, or using the battery charger. Non-compliance with these instructions may result in serious injury, death, property destruction, and damage to the battery charger, and/or void the warranty.
This owner's manual is not intended to replace any training on the handling and operation of material handling equipment, batteries, or the IMPAQ™ charger that may be required by local laws, entities, and/or industry standards. Adequate instruction and training of all users must be ensured before handling the battery charger system.

(*) Opportunity Profile Options:
- Operation: In opportunity charge mode, the user can charge the battery during breaks, lunch, or any available time during working hours. The opportunity charge profile allows the battery to be safely charged while maintained in a partial charge state between 20% and 80% of C6 throughout the working week. Sufficient time should be programmed after the weekly equalization charge to allow the battery to cool and for periodic electrolyte level checks.
- Daily Charge: This option can be set to add daily charge time if the work schedule permits. It should only be considered when the daily work requirement demands additional capacity.
- Equalization Charge: The equalization charge for traditional vented lead-acid batteries, performed after normal charging, balances the electrolyte densities in the battery cells.
- NOTE: The factory preset is daily charge DISABLED, 6-8 hour equalization, Sunday at 00:00 for vented, 2-hour weekly/maintenance charge for NexSys® charge profiles.
Lockout Time: This function prevents the charger from charging the battery during a lockout time window. If a charge cycle started before the lockout window, it pauses during the lockout window and restarts the charge cycle automatically at the end of the lockout window.
Recharge/Maintenance Charge: The recharge or maintenance charge allows the charger to keep the battery at the maximum charge state while it is connected to the charger.

Safety Precautions
WARNING: HAZARDOUS VOLTAGES EXIST INSIDE THE BATTERY CHARGER CABINET. ONLY A QUALIFIED PERSON SHOULD ATTEMPT TO ADJUST OR SERVICE THIS BATTERY CHARGER.
- The transport pallet must be removed for proper and safe operation.
- This manual contains important safety and operating instructions. Before using the battery charger, read all instructions, warnings, and notices relating to the battery charger, the battery, and the product using the battery.
- Read and understand all configuration and operating instructions before using the battery charger to avoid damage to the battery and charger.
- Do not touch uninsulated parts of the output connector or battery terminals to avoid electric shock. Never open the equipment: High voltage may still be present, even with the charger switched off. Any adjustment, maintenance, or repair of the equipment while open should only be performed by a person with adequate competence who is aware of the risks involved.
- During charging, lead-acid batteries produce hydrogen gas which can explode if ignited. Never smoke, use an open flame, or create sparks near the battery. Take all necessary precautions when the equipment is used in areas where an accident may occur. Ensure adequate ventilation, in accordance with EN 62485-3, to allow any released gases to escape. Never disconnect the battery while it is being charged.
- Unless the charger is equipped with the LMEB (late/early pause) functionality, do not connect or disconnect the battery plug while the charger is connected. Doing so may cause arcing and burn the connector, resulting in damage to the charger or battery explosion.
- Lead-acid batteries contain sulfuric acid which causes burns. Do not allow contact with skin, eyes, and clothing. In case of eye contact, immediately flush with clean water for at least 15 minutes. Consult a doctor immediately.
- Only factory-qualified personnel should install, configure, and service this equipment. Disconnect voltage to all AC and DC power connections before servicing the charger.
- Must be used in accordance with its indicated protection level and must never come into contact with water.
- Should not be installed on surfaces subject to vibration (near compressors, machines, motors).
- Must be installed so that gases from the battery being charged are not sucked into the charger by its fans.
- The charger is not intended for outdoor use, only for indoor use.
- Do not expose the charger to humidity. Operating conditions should be 0 °C (32 °F) to 45 °C (113 °F); relative humidity 0 to 70%.
- Do not use the charger if it has been dropped, strongly impacted, or damaged in any way.
- For continuous protection and to reduce the risk of fire, install chargers on a non-combustible surface.
- For NexSys® iON batteries, use only EnerSys® battery packs that include the battery management system and all necessary protection for all battery elements that make up the pack.
- The charger's DC cables emit low-power magnetic fields in their vicinity (< 5 cm). People with medical implants should avoid being near chargers during charging.
- Contact one of the company's trained technicians if there is any problem when the charger is put into operation. It is designed only for recharging Industrial Motive Power lead-acid batteries and NexSys® batteries in industrial installations. When the equipment becomes obsolete, the casing and other internal components may be disposed of by specialized companies. Local legislation prevails over any instructions in this document and must be strictly complied with (WEEE 2002/96/EC).
Installation
Location
For safe operation, choose a location free from excessive humidity, dust, combustible materials, and corrosive fumes. Also avoid high temperatures (above 45 °C [113 °F]) or potential liquid spills on the charger. Do not obstruct the charger's ventilation openings.
Follow the charger's warning label when mounting on or over a combustible surface. It is recommended that the charger be mounted at a minimum radial distance of 72 cm from the nearest battery terminal.
Cabinet Mounting
The charger should be mounted vertically on a wall, stand, shelf, or floor. The minimum distance between two chargers should be 31 cm. If wall-mounted, ensure the surface is not subject to vibration and that it is mounted vertically. If floor-mounted, ensure surfaces are not subject to vibration and have no water or humidity. Avoid areas where chargers may be splashed with water. The charger should be supported by 2 or 4 fasteners suitable for the type of support. The drilling pattern varies according to the charger model (refer to the technical data sheet).
Electrical Connections
To avoid charger failures, ensure it is connected to the correct supply voltage. Follow the norms and local laws of your country when making these connections.
WARNING: Ensure the power supply is switched off and the battery is disconnected before connecting the input power to the charger terminals.
AC Power Supply
You can connect to a single-phase 230 V AC or three-phase 400 V AC electrical supply (depending on the charger type) using a normal socket and an adequate circuit breaker (not supplied). Current consumption is shown on the charger's information plate.
Battery Connection:
The charger must be connected to the battery using the supplied cables:
- The RED cable: to the POSITIVE terminal of the battery.
- The BLACK cable: to the NEGATIVE terminal of the battery.
AC Circuit Protection
The user must provide adequate branch circuit protection and a disconnection method for the AC supply to the charger to allow for safe servicing.
CAUTION: Fire/electric shock hazard. Use only in circuits supplied with branch circuit protection in accordance with laws and norms.
Existing safety regulations must be complied with. The system protection installed on the charger's electrical supply must conform to the charger's electrical characteristics. Installation of an adequate circuit breaker is recommended. When fuses are replaced, it is imperative to ensure that only fuses of the specified type and size are used.
This equipment conforms to Class 1 safety standards, meaning it must be earthed and supplied from an earthed power source.
Charger Grounding
Connect the ground wire to the appropriate terminal, normally marked with one of the two symbols below.

DANGER: FAILURE TO GROUND THE CHARGER CAN CAUSE FATAL ELECTRIC SHOCK. Follow the National Electrical Code to size the ground wire.
DC Connector Polarity
The charging cables are connected to the charger's DC output: the red charging cable (POS) is connected to the charger's positive busbar, and the black charging cable (NEG) is connected to the charger's negative busbar. The charger's output polarity must be respected when connecting to the battery. An incorrect connection will blow the DC fuses in the power modules.

Accessing the Menu
When the charger is inactive, press and hold <ESC>. The main menu is displayed. The Main Menu is abandoned automatically after 60 seconds of inactivity or can be abandoned voluntarily by pressing the <ESC> button.
Main Menu
Access to all menus is from the main menu. The following sections of this manual include a detailed description of each menu. Menus requiring a password are not displayed until the correct password has been entered.
The menus provide access to the following functions:
- View the last 200 charge cycles (Memo menu).
- View faults, alarms, etc. (State menu).
- USB functions (USB menu).
- Set date, language, and others (Parameters menu).
- Password management (Password menu).
Memory Display
The charger can display details of the last 200 charge cycles.
Figure 1: The monitor in Figure 1 shows a charge stored in memory. MEMO 1 is the last stored charge. After the two-hundredth charge is stored, the oldest record is erased and replaced by the next oldest.
Displaying a Charge Cycle
Proceed as follows:
- Select a record (MEMO x) using the [Up Arrow] / [Down Arrow] buttons.
- Display the first History screen by pressing Enter.
- Display the second History screen by pressing [Right Arrow].
- Return to the Main Menu by pressing Esc.
The charge history is displayed. Use [Up Arrow] / [Down Arrow] to scroll through parameters.

State Menu
This menu shows the charger's internal counters (number of normal and partial charges, faults by type, etc.).

USB Menu
This menu provides access to the USB function for software updates. The software is provided by EnerSys®.
Parameters Menu
- Date/Time: Set the charger's date and time. The clock has a backup battery that will maintain the time when the charger's power is switched off.
- Language: Select the language displayed in the menus.
- Region: Select the format for date, metric (EU) or imperial (US) units for temperature, length, and cable size.
Monitor Settings
- Contrast: Adjusts the monitor's contrast level (20 to 29).
- Screen Saver: Activates or deactivates the screen saver function.
- Timeout: Sets the time the screen remains illuminated. The timeout can be adjusted in minutes up to one hour and 59 minutes.
Daylight Saving
Activates or deactivates the automatic clock adjustment for the time change. When activated, the time advances by one hour at 02:00 on the second Sunday in March and moves back by one hour at 02:00 on the first Sunday in November. The charger must be powered on at the time of the change for it to take effect.
Password
This is where the password is entered by authorized EnerSys® service personnel to access the service level menus.

Charging the Battery
At this point, the charger should have been configured by a qualified service technician. Charging can only begin with a battery of the correct type, capacity, and voltage connected to the charger.
With the charger in standby mode (no battery connected) and without pressing the Stop/Start button, the monitor displays the information shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2.

Starting a Charge Cycle
The charger will start automatically when a battery is connected or if the ENTER/STOP & START button is pressed, if the battery is already connected.
Delayed Start
If the charger has been programmed for a delayed start, charging will begin after that delay. When the battery is connected to the charger, the monitor displays the remaining time before the programmed charge start.
Active Charge
After a few moments in active charge, the monitor begins to alternate between the charge information shown in Figure 3, Figure 4, and Figure 5.

End of Charge (No Equalization)
The GREEN fully charged indicator lights up after the charge has ended correctly. The GREEN fully charged indicator is lit, and the monitor displays DISPON. The monitor alternates between:
- Total charge time
- Amp-hours restored to the battery
Any other LED lit indicates a problem during charging. Refer to the Control Panel paragraph on page 9 for more information.
If the battery remains connected and a recharge/maintenance charge has been activated, recharges will occur to maintain an optimal charge.
The battery is now ready to be used. Press the ENTER/STOP & START button before disconnecting the battery.
End of Charge (With Equalization)
An equalization charge can be initiated manually or automatically.

Manual Equalization Start
- At the end of the charge (GREEN fully charged indicator lit or blinking), press the <EQUALIZAR> button. The equalization button can also be pressed at any time during charging, and an equalization charge will be initiated after the charge is completed.
- NOTE: When an equalization charge is initiated manually, the output current is set to the value stored in the charger's configuration.
- The start of the equalization charge is indicated by the message EQUAL. During the equalization charge, the charger displays the output current alternating with: battery voltage, voltage per cell, and remaining time.
- The battery will be available when the GREEN fully charged indicator lights up again and the monitor displays DISPON. The battery is now ready to be used. If the battery remains connected and a recharge/maintenance charge has been activated, recharges will occur to maintain an optimal charge. Press the ENTER/STOP & START button before disconnecting the battery.
Automatic Equalization Start
If an equalization day has been programmed in the charger's settings, the equalization charge will automatically start on the programmed day of the week after the charge is completed.
NOTE: The factory preset is IEI equalization, 6 hours, Sunday at 00:00 hours.
The battery will be available when the GREEN fully charged indicator lights up again and the monitor displays DISPON. The battery is now ready to be used. If the battery remains connected and the recharge charge has been activated, updates will occur to maintain an optimal charge. Press the ENTER/STOP & START button before disconnecting the battery.
Fault Codes
In case of a fault, one of the corresponding fault codes listed below is displayed on the monitor. If it is a critical fault, charging stops and the red fault LED lights up.

Maintenance and Service
WARNING: HAZARDOUS VOLTAGES EXIST INSIDE THE BATTERY CHARGER CABINET. ONLY QUALIFIED PERSONS SHOULD ATTEMPT TO ADJUST OR SERVICE THIS BATTERY CHARGER.
The charger requires minimal maintenance. Connections and terminals should be kept clean and tight. The unit (especially the heatsink) should be cleaned periodically with low-pressure air to prevent excessive dirt accumulation on the components. Care must be taken not to strike any adjustments or move them during cleaning. Ensure both AC lines and the battery are disconnected before cleaning. The frequency of this type of maintenance depends on the environment in which this unit is installed.
