Congratulations on purchasing your Nakamichi mobile system product for your sound system.
This product has been designed and manufactured to Nakamichi's exacting standards to ensure many years of audio enjoyment. For the best performance, Nakamichi recommends that your Nakamichi product be installed by an authorized Nakamichi dealer.
If you wish to install this product yourself, it is recommended to go through this manual to familiarize yourself with all the installation requirements and procedures.
Should you encounter any issues or have questions regarding the operation of this product, please contact your nearest authorized Nakamichi dealer for assistance, or you may also contact Nakamichi through its website or social media channels.
Installation of your Product
In today's modern vehicles, it is easy to cause damage to existing systems through improper installation. Please follow and scrutinize all wiring diagrams to ensure that all connections are made in their proper place.
If you find yourself uncomfortable or unfamiliar with understanding the wiring and installation diagrams or testing instructions, please contact your nearest Nakamichi dealer to perform the installation.
Safety Warnings and Considerations
- Clean only with a dry cloth or other similar materials.
- Install your product in a dry, well-ventilated location that does not interfere with your vehicle's safety equipment.
- Do not block any ventilation openings when installing this product.
- Do not mount the product in the engine compartment of your vehicle or in any areas of extreme heat such as mufflers, silencers, exhaust pipes, or other heat-producing apparatus.
- Securely mount the product so that it does not come loose in the event of a collision or as a result of repeated vibrations that might occur during normal operation.
- Installation of the apparatus must be done with great care to prevent damage to your vehicle's fuel lines, power, and other electrical wiring, hydraulic brake lines, and other systems. If possible, always visit your nearest Nakamichi dealer to perform the installation.
- Do not run any wiring outside or underneath the vehicle. Keep all wires inside the vehicle.
- Take the necessary precautions when making connections to the vehicle's battery to avoid any potential shock.
- Protect all system wires from sharp edges by carefully routing them, always use rubber grommets to protect wiring and cables whenever you are installing them through metal openings.
- Secure all wiring using cable ties or wire clamps to protect them from moving parts and sharp edges.
- This apparatus shall not be exposed to dripping or splashing, and no object filled with liquids shall be placed on the apparatus.
- Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel. Servicing is required when the apparatus has been damaged in any way, such as the power input terminals are damaged, liquid has been spilled or objects have fallen into the apparatus, the apparatus has been exposed to rain or moisture, does not operate normally, or has been dropped.
- Fuses shall be replaced only with the correct type and fuse value, and only when the apparatus is powered off.
- Exposure to high sound pressure levels may lead to permanent hearing loss. Take every precaution to protect your hearing.
- This product is designed specifically for use with 12-volt, negative-ground electrical systems only. Using this product in systems with positive ground and/or voltages other than 12V may result in damage to the product and your system.
Warranty Considerations
Nakamichi warrants this product to be free of defects in materials and workmanship for a period stated by your country's authorized Nakamichi distributor. This warranty is not transferable and applies only to the original owner who purchased from an authorized Nakamichi dealer or distributor.
Damage caused by the following is not covered under warranty: accident, misuse, abuse, product modification or neglect, failure to follow installation instructions, unauthorized repair attempts, misrepresentations by the seller.
This warranty does not cover incidental or consequential damages and does not cover the cost of removing or reinstalling the unit(s). Cosmetic damage due to accident or normal wear and tear is not covered under warranty.
Warranty is void if the product's serial number has been removed or defaced.
Components Overview
The Nakamichi NQ9218 features a user-friendly interface with various controls and ports:
- Front Panel Controls: Eject, Band, Display, Volume Knob/SEL, Disc Slot, Mute/AS, Tune/Track Up, Hands-free Microphone, IR Remote Sensor, LCD Display, USB Port, Power/Mode.
- Rear Connections: Power/Speaker Connector, External Mic, Antenna Jack, Subwoofer Output, Front RCA Output (Left/Right), Rear RCA Output (Left/Right), Video Output.
- Remote Control: Provides comprehensive control over all functions including Power, Mute, Play/Pause, Track Navigation, Volume, Band Selection, Radio Tuning, Mode Selection, and more.
Wiring Diagram
The wiring diagram illustrates the connections for power, speakers, and other accessories. Key connections include:
- Power/Speaker Connector (A & B): Connects to the vehicle's power supply and speakers. Color-coded wires indicate specific functions: Red (Ignition Cable), Black (Ground Cable), Blue (ANT Automatic), Yellow (Power Supply). Speaker connections include Front Left, Front Right, Rear Left, and Rear Right speakers with positive (+) and negative (-) terminals.
- Antenna Jack: For connecting the radio antenna.
- External Mic: For hands-free calling.
- RCA Outputs: Front, Rear, and Subwoofer outputs for connecting external amplifiers or powered subwoofers.
- Video Output: For connecting a video display.
Important Note: Do not connect speaker leads to the car battery, as this can cause serious damage. Always check your car's speaker wiring before making connections.
General Operation
- Power On/Off: Press any button (except the release button) to turn the unit on. Press and hold the MODE button to turn the unit off.
- Removing The Front Panel: Press the RELEASE button to detach the front panel.
- Volume Adjustment: Rotate the Volume knob to adjust the volume level.
- Mute On/Off: Briefly press the mute button ? to toggle mute on or off.
- Changing Modes: Press the ⏇/MODE button to select between Radio, Disc, USB (with USB device inserted), AUX-IN (auxiliary input), and BT (Bluetooth) modes.
- Audio/Menu Settings: Press the Volume (SEL) button momentarily to cycle through audio/menu functions such as BASS, TREBLE, BALANCE, FADER, EQ settings (USER/FLAT/CLASSIC/ROCK/POP), LOUD ON/OFF, BEEP ON/OFF, CLOCK format (24/12), CLOCK SETTING, BT MENU/AUTO, DISTANT/LOCAL, STEREO/MONO, and AREA settings (EU/US/AS/RU). Rotate the Volume knob to adjust or activate the desired function/audio setting.
- Display Information: With the unit on, press and hold DISP to display the clock time. Press and hold DISP again to toggle display between various information such as radio frequency, time, and music playback details.
- Auxiliary Input Jack: Use a 3.5mm audio cable to connect external devices like MP3 players or DVD players to the auxiliary input jack on the front panel. This allows you to listen to audio from these devices through your car speakers.
- Reset: After removing the front panel, use a thin pointed object to push the RESET button located on the unit's base to restore factory default settings.
Radio Operation
- Switching Frequency Bands: In radio mode, press the Volume button momentarily to select the "AREA EU/US/AS/RU" item, then rotate the volume knob to switch between European, USA, Asian, or Russian frequencies. The system will change the frequency setting in approximately 3 seconds.
- Changing Bands: In radio mode, briefly press the BAND/DISP button to select between FM1, FM2, FM3, and AM1 (MW1), AM2 (MW2) bands.
- Storing/Recalling Preset Stations: The radio can store 6 preset stations for each band (FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1, and AM2) for a total of 30 preset stations. To memorize a station, press and hold the desired preset buttons (1-6). To recall a preset station, briefly press the respective station button (1-6).
- Manual Tuning: In radio mode, briefly press the ≫I or I<< button to step through frequencies one by one.
- Seek Tuning: In radio mode, press and hold the ≫I or I<< button to seek the next or previous strong station.
- Automatic Store Preset Station: Press and hold the AS button for more than 2 seconds to automatically store 18 FM stations and 12 AM (MW) stations.
- RDS (Radio Data System) On/Off: Briefly press the Volume button to select the "AREA EU" station. The system will change the frequency setting within 3 seconds.
- PTY (Program Type): Once in PTY mode, press the button to enter the program type selection, and rotate the volume knob to select the desired category. Available program types include POP, ROCK, EASY, LIGHT, CLASSICS, JAZZ, COUNTRY, NEWS, SPORT, etc.
- AF (Alternate Frequencies): When set to ON, the unit will search for another station with a stronger signal but the same program identification as the current station automatically. Set to OFF to cancel.
- TA (Traffic Announcement): When set to ON, the unit switches to tuner mode (regardless of the current mode) and broadcasts traffic announcements. When the announcement is over, it returns to the previous mode. Set to OFF to disable traffic announcements.
DVD/USB Operation
- Insert DVD: With the label facing up, insert a standard size DVD into the DVD slot. Playback will begin automatically.
- Eject DVD: Press the (Eject button) to eject the DVD.
- USB Connection: Insert a USB stick into the USB port to play MP3/WMA and other music files. The USB port also supports charging for iPhone/Android mobile phones (1A current).
- Select Next/Previous Track: In DVD/USB mode, briefly press the ≫I or I<< button to play the next or previous track.
- Fast Forward/Reverse: Press and hold the ≫I or I<< button to fast forward or reverse a track.
- Play/Pause: Press the ▶/II button to interrupt (pause) or resume playback.
- Introduction Scan: Press INT to play the first 10 seconds of each track on DVD/USB. Press again to cancel the INT function.
- Repeating Track: Press RPT to toggle between RPT FLD (repeat current folder), RPT ALL (repeat all tracks), and RPT ONE (repeat selected track).
- Playing All Tracks in Random: Press RDM to play songs in random order. Press again to cancel the RDM function.
- Folder/Track Navigation: Press the folder buttons to select the previous or next folder (available only if the device has more than one folder). Press and hold the folder buttons to jump 10 tracks backward or forward (requires more than 10 tracks on the storage medium).
Bluetooth Operation
- Pair and Connect: To use the Bluetooth hands-free system, pair your phone with the head unit. Activate Bluetooth on your phone. When your phone finds the car audio system, select "NQ921B" from the list to pair. The BT logo will stop flashing upon successful pairing. Audio from calls and music will automatically transfer to the car audio system. Refer to your mobile phone's manual for detailed pairing instructions.
- Make a Call: Dial directly from your paired mobile phone.
- Redial Last Dialed Number: Press and hold the button to redial the last dialed number.
- Answer a Call: When a call comes in, the incoming number displays on the LCD. Press the button to answer.
- Reject or End a Call: Press the button to reject an incoming call. Press and hold the button to end an ongoing call.
- Switch Audio Between Car Audio and Mobile Phone: During a call, press the button to switch the audio source between the car audio system and your mobile phone.
- Adjust Call Volume: During a call, use the Volume knob or VOL+/VOL- buttons to adjust the call volume. Use the MUTE button to mute sound.
- Audio Streaming (A2DP): The head unit supports A2DP wireless streaming audio from a Bluetooth-enabled mobile device. Use the >>I, I<<, and ▶/II buttons to control music playback (skip tracks, play/pause).
- App Operation: Use the NAKAMICHI mobile app to wirelessly control the NQ9218 head unit with Apple & Android devices. Search for the "NAKAMICHI" app on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, download and install it. After pairing your smartphone with the NQ9218, tap the app icon on your phone screen to control audio and RDS functions.
