APIM Programming Tips using PTS/IDS/FDRS programming
Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM) Section 418-01 or 415-00 for programming steps.
It is recommended to install a battery charger set on low when performing programming steps. A hard wired internet connection is strongly recommended.
Make sure the proper SYNC USB 2.0 A-Male to A-Male cable and SYNC USB 2.0A-Female to Mini B Female 5-pin adaptor is being used for SYNC Gen1 and Gen2. Internet Explorer (IE) version 11 is required.
If no progress bar is present at the bottom of IE, click Maximize to make visible.
Confirm SYNC function by pressing the "Phone" button. If no SYNC function is present, the APIM will not program. Follow normal WSM diagnostics.
NOTE: If unable to complete programming because the operation stops or errors are received, IE Security settings may need to be configured. The incorrect IE security settings prevent the Read VIN and DTC feature from operating on PTS.
Windows 10 has the Microsoft Edge browser set as default and this will need to be changed to Internet Explorer for SYNC programming to work correctly. To setup a new Windows 10 computer for the PTS website and SYNC programming or to confirm the IE security settings are correct due to programming failure on a previously setup computer, perform the following steps: (Windows 7 settings are similar)
- In the Windows Search box (magnifying glass icon ?) in the lower left of the computer desktop, type Internet Options. Click on Internet Options, under Best match. This will open the Internet Properties Window.
- Under General, select the Tabs button. Under "When a pop-up is encountered", select the bullet point next to "Always open pop-ups in a new window", then select OK.
- Click on the Security Tab and click on Trusted Sites. Click on the Sites button. Remove the check from the box next to Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone. Once this has been performed, click in the "Add This website to this zone:" box and add the following websites:
- *.dealerconnection.com
- *.ford.com
- *.fordservicecontent.com
- http://updates.installshield.com
- Double-check spelling and then click on the Close button.
- Uncheck the box next to Enable Protected Mode (requires restarting Internet Explorer), select Apply and then OK.
- Click on the Custom Level button to open the Security Settings - Trusted Sites Zone window.
- In the Reset custom settings box, click on the Reset to: and set to Low, then click Reset. When the Warning! pop-up is displayed, select Yes to confirm this change.
- In the settings box, scroll down to verify that the following settings are enabled:
- Access data sources across domains
- Display mixed content
- Navigate windows and frames across different domains
- Websites in less privileged web content zone can navigate into this zone
- Active scripting.
Click OK, and when the Warning! pop-up is displayed, select Yes to confirm, then click Apply in the Internet Properties window.
Click the Privacy tab and make sure that the box next to Turn On Pop-up Blocker is unchecked, click Apply, then click OK to close the Internet Properties window. If the Turn On Pop-up Blocker is checked and cannot be unchecked then click on the Settings button and add the websites below in the box under Address of website to allow: ensure to click on the Add button after entering each website. Once complete, close the Pop-up Blocker Settings window.
- *.dealerconnection.com
- *.ford.com
- *.fordservicecontent.com
In the Windows Search box, type Default Apps and select Default App Settings under Best match. When the Settings window opens, check if the Edge Browser is the default web browser. If so, click on the Edge Browser, which will display all installed web browsers, and select Internet Explorer then close the Settings window.
Type Device Manager, in the Windows Search box, and select Device Manager, under Best Match. If the "You are logged on as a standard user. You can view device settings in Device Manager, but you must be logged on as an administrator to make changes" message populates, click on OK.
- Click on Universal Serial Bus controllers, to expand this option, then select USB Root Hub, to open the Properties window. Select the Power Management tab and uncheck the box next to Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power, then click OK and close the Device Manager window.
NOTE: If you are unable to make the change, an administrator login is required.
After the computer has restarted, launch Internet Explorer then click on Tools (gear icon ⚙️ in the top right of the browser window). Select Safety and make sure there is not a check mark next to Active X Filtering, if there is then click on it to remove the check. Look at SmartScreen Filter and verify it says "Turn on SmartScreen Filter". If it says "Turn off SmartScreen Filter", click on it to turn it off.
Once these changes have been made, close all open programs and internet browsers, then restart the computer.
For SYNC 3 vehicles, recommended size for the USB drive is 32GB. The USB drive must be formatted to exFAT and FAT32 for Gen 2 equipped vehicles according to WSM Section 415-00. Using a 4GB or 8GB flash drive will induce SYNC programming faults potentially resulting in APIM failure.
NOTE: If all normal WSM, TSB, SSM and/or GSB diagnostics have been performed, there may be a SYNC server issue preventing SYNC programming. If all above diagnostics, as well as all below diagnostics, have been performed, it may be necessary to contact the Ford Technical Assistance Center to restore the SYNC server information.
In order to access the SYNC Cache Folder, the Hidden Files function needs to be enabled.
Windows 10 (HIDDEN FILES)
- Use the magnifying glass ? in the bottom left hand corner of the Windows bar and search for "Hidden".
- An option to "Show Hidden Files and Folders" appear as a link to the Control Panel. Open this at this time by left clicking "Show Hidden Files and Folders" icon.
- Within the Advanced Settings box, Hidden Files and Folders will be displayed with two circle options. Select the "Show hidden files, folders, and drives" option by ensuring a circle is present.
Windows 7 (HIDDEN FILES)
- Select the Start button, then select Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization.
- Select Folder Options, then select the View tab.
- Under Advanced settings, select Show hidden files, folders, and drives, and then select OK.
Sync Cache Folder
Press the Windows Key located in lower left hand corner of the keyboard. Select This PC (or My Computer) > C:Drive > Program Data > Ford Motor Company > SYNC > Cache.
Sync/APIM reboot-reset procedure
The Sync reset/reboot procedure is performed by pressing and holding the seek forward/seek up button (> >) while pressing and holding the radio power button located on the interface/FCIM. Release both buttons after 3-4 seconds and allow the reset to complete.
NOTE: An APIM/Sync reset/reboot consists of an APIM software cold boot. It may not be necessary to perform a Master Reset after performing a cold boot if the concern is resolved. The Sync reset/reboot procedure does not remove or delete any stored user information that occurs when performing an APIM master reset.
NOTE: The flash drive full format method can take up to 10 minutes for completion. This method is recommended to ensure all bad files are completely removed from the flash/USB drive used.
