Preparation
Before installation, it is essential to blend porcelain tiles from multiple cartons and pallets to ensure color and dye lot consistency across the project.
Installation
Key installation steps include:
- Using latex-modified thinset for large-format porcelains, applied in a single direction to prevent air pockets and minimize lippage.
- Following TCNA recommendations for staggered patterns (33% offset or 1/3 - 2/3 layout) for rectangular tiles (18" or larger) to mitigate warpage.
- Adhering to a 1/32" lippage tolerance for specified joint sizes.
- For showers and tubs, maintaining a 1/4" gap from the base/lip and using waterproof sealant as per TCNA B412-23.
- For pre-scored tiles like "Barcelona," matching grout joint width to the scored groove and grouting the groove itself.
- Using Latex Modified Thinset for field tile and mosaics with mesh backing for optimal adhesion.
Grouting
Elon Tile & Stone recommends a minimum 1/16" grout joint and suggests using 100% Epoxy Grout and Mortar (meeting A118.3 specifications) from brands like Mapei, Custom Building Products, TEC, or Bostik. Proper mixing and a two-step washing process (diagonal sponge wash, then cloth wash) are advised to maintain grout joint integrity.
Sealing
Sealing of 100% Solids Epoxy Grout is not required.
