Setup Methods

Method ONE: Quick Setup using the WPS Button

This method is for routers that support Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS). Your router's WPS button might look like one of these: [WPS button symbol].

  1. Power on: Plug your extender into a power outlet near your Router/AP. Wait until the Power LED goes from blinking to solid on.
  2. Push the two WPS buttons: Press the WPS button on your Router/AP, then press the WPS button on your extender. The WPS LED on the extender will start blinking. Wait until the WPS LED turns solid on, indicating a successful connection.

Method TWO: Quick Setup using Web Browser

This method is for routers that do not support WPS or if you are unsure.

  1. Power on: Plug your extender into a power outlet near your Router/AP. Wait until the Power LED goes from blinking to solid on.
  2. Connect your computer to the TL-WA860RE:
    • For Windows Users: Unplug the Ethernet cable from your computer (if any). Click the Wireless Network Connection icon on your taskbar, refresh the list, and connect to the extender's network (e.g., TP-LINK_Extender_XXXXXX).
    • For Mac OS X Users: Unplug the Ethernet cable from your Mac (if any). Click the Wi-Fi icon in the top right corner of the screen and connect to the extender's network (e.g., TP-LINK_Extender_XXXXXX).
  3. Configure:
    • Launch a web browser and type http://tplinkrepeater.net in the address field. Enter 'admin' for both Username and Password, then click Login.
    • Create a new username and password for secure management and click Confirm.
    • Select your router's 2.4GHz Network (SSID), enter its wireless password, and click Next.
    • Either keep the default SSID or customize it for the extended 2.4GHz network, then click Next.
    • Verify your wireless settings and click Save.

Relocate

Plug in the extender halfway between your router and the Wi-Fi dead zone. Wait about 1 minute for the LED to turn green. If it doesn't turn green, relocate it closer to the router to achieve better signal quality.

LED Status for Location:

Enjoy!

Your extender shares the same network name (SSID) and password as your main Router/AP. You can connect to the extended network using the same password.

Entertainment Adapter

The extender can be used as a wireless adapter to connect any Ethernet-only device (e.g., Blu-ray player, game console, DVR, smart TV) to your Wi-Fi network. Connect the extender to your router first (using Method ONE or TWO), then connect your Ethernet-only device to the extender via an Ethernet cable.

TP-LINK Tether App

The Tether app provides a simple, intuitive way to access and manage your extender with your iOS or Android devices. Download the Tether app from the App Store or Google Play. Ensure your device is wirelessly connected to the extender or the host router. Launch the app and start managing your extended network.

Features include: Setup the extender, Modify current settings, Turn on/off LED, Block unwelcome devices.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  2. Q2. Why doesn't the login page appear after entering http://tplinkrepeater.net?

A1: If your computer is wirelessly connected, ensure you are connected to the extender's SSID. If connected via Ethernet cable, ensure the connection is stable.
