Product Overview
This document provides a quick start guide for the WATLOW PM3 LEGACY™ PID Controller, covering essential steps for installation, wiring, and basic configuration. For detailed information, refer to the full user manual available on the Watlow website.

1 - Mount to Panel
Note: Mounting requires access to the back of the panel.
- Make panel cutout using measurements in Figure 1 (45.2 mm / 1.78 in. width, 22.4 mm / 0.88 in. height).
- Remove green terminal connectors and mounting collar assembly.
- Insert controller into panel cutout from the front.
- Orient collar base (flat side front, screw openings on sides per Figure 2) and slide over controller back.
- Slide mounting bracket over controller, aligning screws with collar base. Push until hooks snap into case slots.
- Tighten two #6-19 x 1.5 in. screws with Phillips screwdriver (3-4 in-lbs torque) until device is flush.
- Reinstall terminal connectors. (Alternatively, connect field wiring first, then reinstall connectors).
2 - Connect the Sensor Input
Connect sensor as indicated. Figure 4 illustrates Thermocouple connection.
- Thermocouple: Example shown in Figure 4.
- Platinum 100/1000 RTD: Max. 200Ω round trip lead resistance. Wiring for 2-wire and 3-wire configurations shown.
- Process Voltage/Current: Voltage: 0-50mV or 0-10V @ 20kΩ. Current: 0-20mA @ 100Ω. Diagrams for volts and amperes.
3 & 4 - Wire Outputs
Refer to wiring diagram for configuration code and connect to indicated slots.
Output 1 Types:
- PM3__[C]__AAAN__: Switched DC/Open Collector (Internal: Common, 24Vdc+, Power Supply+, Load+, Switched DC)
- PM3__[F]__AAAN__: Universal Process (Internal: F1, G1 (0-10V), H1 (4-20mA); Voltage/Current Load)
- PM3__[K]__AAAN__: Solid State Relay 0.5A, Form A (Internal: Common, Load, AC; Normally Open)
Output 2 Types:
- PM3__[J]__AAAN__: Mechanical Relay 5A, Form A (Internal: Common, Load, AC; Normally Open)
- PM3__[E]__AAAN__: Mechanical Relay 5A, Form C (Internal: Common, Load, AC; Normally Open, Normally Closed)
- PM3__[C]__AAAN__: Switched DC (Internal: Common, 24Vdc+, Load+)
- PM3__[K]__AAAN__: Solid State Relay 0.5A, Form A (Internal: Common, Load, AC; Normally Open)
5 - Connect Power
Configuration Code: PM3_[1,2,3,4]__AAAN__
- 1 or 2: 120-240 V (ac)
- 3 or 4: 24 V (ac or dc)
CAUTION: Do not connect high voltage to a controller that requires low voltage.

7 & 8 - Keypad Overview and Menu Basics
7 - Keypad Overview
- Left Display: Shows Process Value (PV) at home; shows value or setting in menus.
- Right Display: Shows Set Point (SP) at home; shows page name when entering pages; shows parameter name in menus.
- Output Activity Indicator: Shows activity of outputs 1 & 2, and 5 & 6.
- Manual Power Indicator: Shows if set point is in % manual mode.
- Advance Key: Advances through menu prompts.
- Infinity Key: Clears/silences alarms when active; otherwise returns home.
- Up/Down Keys: Adjust set point (right display) at home; change menus (inside pages); change selected settings (left display within menus).
8 - Introduction to Keypad and Menu Basics
This Quick Start Guide (QSG) provides a quick reference for navigating the controller. Refer to the User's Guide for detailed instructions.
Pages, Menus, and Keypad Basics
- Setup Page: Menus for parameters typically changed once upon installation or hardware changes (e.g., Analog Input, Linearization, Digital I/O, Control Loop, Output, Alarm, Timer, Global, Communications).
- Operations Page: Menus for parameters changed more frequently (e.g., Analog Input, Linearization, Process Value, Digital I/O, Monitor, Control Loop, Alarm, Timer).
Navigation:
- To enter Setup Page: Press and hold both arrow keys (+) for 6 seconds.
- To enter Operations Page: Press and hold both arrow keys (+) for 3 seconds.
- Use arrow keys (▲/▼) to select menus.
- Press Advance key to enter a selected menu.
- Press Infinity key for 2 seconds within a menu to return home.
- Global Function: Set display units (°F or °C). Set units first if using °C (default is °F).
9-15 - Setting Configuration Parameters
These sections outline how to configure various controller functions:
- 9 - Set Inputs: Configure sensor inputs (Thermocouple, RTD, Voltage, Current). Select thermocouple type (J, K, T) or RTD type.
- 10 - Set Control Loop: Configure control loop mode (Off, PID, On/Off), heat/cool algorithms, and action on sensor failure. Set min/max set points.
- 11 - Set Outputs: Select output number (1 or 2), configure output function (Heat, Cool, Alarm), and set time base for mechanical relays.
- 12 - Set Alarm: Select alarm number (1-4), configure alarm type (Off, Deviation, Process), and set alarm sides (Both, High, Low).
- 13 - Set Alarm Set Points: Set low/high set points for alarms, or deviation set points.
- 14 - Loop Control Mode/Loop Setpoint: Set control mode (Auto, Manual, Off) and adjust loop set point. Auto entry after 3 seconds.
- 15 - Autotune the Control Loop: Select autotuning (Yes/No). Tuning progress is indicated.
