Air Control Solutions ZPD15 & ZPD25 Installation & Maintenance Manual Receiving, Handling and Storage: Upon receipt of product, check to ensure there is no visible or concealed damage. If damage is found, document the specific damage and file a freight claim with the carrier that delivered the product. Care should be taken to ensure that all parts of the shipment, including shiploose accessories, are accounted for. Dampers must be kept clean and dry during storage, and throughout the entire installation process. Ruskin recommends that all products are stored in an indoor structure to protect the product from water damage and limit loss. Do not store product in temperatures exceeding the product temperature range. Keep product in an area free of paint, insulation or texture overspray, construction (sheetrock or mortar) dust, or any area that can expose the product to dirt or moisture. Failure to store the dampers properly can cause damage to the motor and void the product warranty. IMPORTANT! Model ZPD25 damper/motor assembly Model ZPD15 damper/motor assembly Optional diffuser cable kit Optional junction box kit Optional ZRC020 hand-held remote damper control Pre-Installation Checklist Notes: Read through the entire installation and maintenance manual to get familiarized with the requirements. Remove each damper from packaging and inspect for damage. Product should have been stored in a clean and dry area in accordance with receiving, handling and storage note above. Using the hand-held remote, connect the RJ-11 connector directly to the motor coupler and power each damper to the fully open position. Referencing the project drawings, identify each damper location. When ready to install, lift dampers by the frame only, and place near the installation location. You are now ready to install the dampers and associated power transfer cable components. 1. Ruskin Models ZPD15 and ZPD25 come factory assembled with motor bracket, motor, and RJ-11 female interface at the motor. Install the dampers in accordance with SMACNA guidelines and local building codes. 2. Optional junction box kit includes a low voltage junction box, suitable for flush mount installation in either ceiling or wall application. It also includes a cover plate and the RJ11 snap-in coupler. 3. Optional diffuser cable kit includes a plenum rated power transfer cable and RJ-11 coupler. 4. The optional ZRC020 hand-held remote includes an RJ-11 cable that plugs into the coupler located in the junction box or diffuser. When connected, it transfers the power from the battery to the damper motor. Installation Instructions Ruskin models ZPD15 and ZPD25 are completely factory assembled with the gear box and motor in place. Simply install the damper, snap one end of the plenum rated power transfer cable into the female interface located on the motor, run the power transfer cable to the termination point, snap the other end of the power transfer cable into the junction box or diffuser coupler, and you are done. A graphic of the installation is shown below. More detailed instructions are below the graphic. Ruskin models ZPD15 and ZPD25 are completely factory assembled with the gear box and motor in place. Simply install the damper, snap one end of the plenum rated power transfer cable into the female interface located on the motor, run the power transfer cable to the termination point, snap the other end of the power transfer cable into the junction box or diffuser coupler, and you are done. Step-by-step instructions are below. ZPD25 (round damper installation) 1. Lifting the damper by the frame only, position it into place. 2. Slide the damper into the duct on both sides. 3. Secure and seal the damper in accordance with SMACNA guidelines and local building codes. Care should be taken not to install screws in the damper frame in a location that will impede damper blade operation. 4. Make sure the damper is in the fully open position. ZPD15 (rectangular damper installation) 1. Model ZPD15 comes with a factory mounted side plate. If ordered with a sleeve, simply install the damper as you would any other sleeved component. For side plate installation, cut a 3 inch wide hole the height of the duct to allow enough room to side the damper into position. Push the damper in until the side plate covers the hole. 2. Secure and seal the damper in accordance with SMACNA guidelines and local building codes. Care should be taken not to install screws in the damper frame in a location that will impede damper blade operation. 3. Make sure to leave the damper in the fully open position. Junction Box Kit Installation 1. Using nails for wood construction and screws for steel stud construction, install junction box on any wall stud or ceiling joist as shown in detail to right. Set depth of junction box for finished wall thickness. 2. Snap wall box coupler into the back of the cover plate. 3. Connect one end of power transfer cable to back side of wall box coupler (inside the junction box). Run cable to damper location and connect the other end to the motor interface. Diffuser Kit Installation 1. Starting at the damper motor, connect one end of the power transfer cable at the RJ-11 interface. 2. Run the cable to the desired diffuser and drill a ½" hole in the top of the diffuser in a location that is not visible from the finished side. 3. Push the power transfer cable into the hole and connect the Diffuser coupler to the cable from the finished side. 4. Fill the hole with an industry approved sealing method. Installed junction box with wall box coupler and cover plate in place Operation: To position the damper, plug the RJ-11 cable on the hand-held remote damper control into the corresponding damper connector at junction box or diffuser location, and push the button until the desired damper position is reached. Maintenance: When stored and installed correctly, Ruskin ZPD series dampers are maintenance free for the expected life of the damper. If the damper does not operate, replace the battery in the hand-held remote damper control.
