Power Supply Categories
Agilent offers several categories of power supplies:
Basic
Affordable, quiet, and stable power supplies suitable for manual and simple computer-controlled operation. Optimized for applications where speed and accuracy are less critical, offering a high-value fit for bench or system rack use.
Performance
Feature speed, accuracy, and advanced programming capabilities, making them ideal for tests where power supply performance is crucial. They include features like DUT protection, fast programming times, and downloadable voltage and current sequences.
Specialty
Designed for specific applications, such as the Agilent 66300 Mobile Communications DC Sources for emulating battery characteristics or the Agilent E4360 Solar Array Simulator for simulating solar panel I-V characteristics.
Modular
Agilent offers fully programmable power supplies in modular formats, including the N6700 low-profile modular power system, N6705B DC power analyzer, and 66000 modular power system series. This allows for extensive power options and simplifies system architecture through a single interface node.
AC Sources
Provide precise power, accurate measurements, and efficient analysis for AC power applications, serving as one-box solutions for testing AC-powered devices.
DC Electronic Loads
Sink current and dissipate power accurately and in a controlled manner. They allow for varying the load on a circuit's output to understand performance. Agilent offers single-output and modular, multiple-output families.
Selecting the Right DC Power Supply For Your Application
Choosing the right DC power supply involves considering voltage and current requirements, alongside other factors like ripple and noise, and programming accuracy. This guide provides definitions, importance, and usage of these features to help users specify the correct power supply.
Output Characteristics
Ripple and Noise
This specification determines the impact of voltage variations (ripple and noise) on your circuit. It is typically specified as Vrms or Vp-p, with Vp-p indicating the maximum variation from the DC setpoint.
Programming Accuracy
Measures how closely the output matches the setpoint, specified as a percentage of output plus an offset. Many supplies include built-in voltmeters and ammeters for output measurement.
Output Response
Indicates how quickly the output reaches the setpoint after a change, influenced by regulation design and output bandwidth. Specifications are typically for a 10% to 90% voltage change or a 50% to 100% load change.
Control
Computer Interface
Power supplies offer manual or computer control via interfaces like GPIB, USB, and LAN (LXI-C), with software support including SCPI language and drivers.
Analog Voltage Control Signal
Some supplies feature an analog voltage control input to track or amplify the power output, allowing it to follow an analog voltage signal up to its rated maximum.
Output Measurements
Measure V & I Output
Many power supplies include built-in voltmeters and ammeters to display or query output voltage and current, useful for computer-controlled systems. Accuracy is specified as a percentage of full scale plus an offset.
Packaging
Physical Size
Agilent power supplies adhere to standard EIA 19-inch rack dimensions, available in half-rack or full-rack widths and heights ranging from 1U to 5U. Half-rack widths are often preferred for bench applications, while full-rack widths are suitable for system racks. The N5700 and N6700 Series feature a 1U height.
Front or Rear Output Terminals
Output terminals can be located on the front or rear panel. High-current and system supplies typically have rear outputs, while bench and low-current models often feature front outputs.
Number of Outputs
Supplies can be configured with 1 to 8 outputs per unit, saving space. Modular mainframes like the 66000 and N6700 can hold up to 8 and 4 modules, respectively.
Specialty Features
DUT Protection
Select power supplies with DUT protection to safeguard devices under test from over-voltage or over-current damage. This feature limits voltage and/or current regardless of the load.
Power Arbitrary Waveforms
Utilize the LIST feature for power supplies that require changing power input over time. This allows pre-programming a list of setpoints, simplifying test programs.
Output Disconnect or Polarity Reversal
Optional output relays enable automatic connect, disconnect, and polarity reversal, providing an easy method for programmatic control without external relays.

The modular solar array simulator (SAS) simulates the output characteristics of a solar array, acting as a current source with low output capacitance. It can simulate I-V curves under various environmental conditions.
Key features include: accurate simulation of any solar array type; small size (up to 2 outputs in 2U); high output power (up to 600 W per output); fast I-V curve changes; System Control Tools software; and custom turn-key systems or individual instruments.
