2008 Nissan Rogue Restraint System Service Manual

This document provides detailed service procedures for the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) components of the 2008 Nissan Rogue. It covers precautions, preparation, and on-vehicle repair for various SRS parts.

Precautions

Precaution for Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) "AIR BAG" and "SEAT BELT PRE-TENSIONER"

The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), including "AIR BAG" and "SEAT BELT PRE-TENSIONER", works with front seat belts to reduce the risk or severity of injury to the driver and front passenger during collisions. The SRS system uses seat belt switch inputs and dual-stage front air bag modules. Deployment of front air bags may vary based on collision severity and occupant seat belt usage.

WARNING:

  • To prevent SRS system malfunction, which could increase the risk of injury or death in a collision, all maintenance must be performed by an authorized NISSAN/INFINITI dealer.
  • Improper maintenance, including incorrect removal and installation, can cause personal injury due to unintentional system activation. Refer to the "SRS AIRBAG" section for removal of the Spiral Cable and Air Bag Module.
  • Do not use electrical test equipment on SRS circuits unless specifically instructed in this Service Manual. SRS wiring harnesses and connectors are typically yellow and/or orange.

Service Precautions:

  • Do not use electrical test equipment to check SRS circuits unless instructed.
  • Before servicing, turn the ignition switch OFF, disconnect both battery cables, and wait at least 3 minutes. The SRS components can remain charged for a short period after power is removed.
  • Ensure the diagnosis sensor unit is installed with its arrow marks "<" pointing towards the front of the vehicle for proper operation. Check for cracks or deformities and replace if necessary.
  • The spiral cable must be aligned in its neutral position. Avoid turning the steering wheel or column after removing the steering gear.
  • Handle air bag modules with care. Always place them with the pad side facing upward.
  • Conduct self-diagnosis to verify SRS functionality after component replacement.
  • Replace the front instrument panel assembly if damaged after an air bag deployment.
  • Always replace the instrument panel pad after front passenger air bag deployment.

Occupant Classification System:

  • Replace the occupant classification system control unit and passenger front seat cushion as an assembly. Refer to SE-28, "Removal and Installation".

Preparation

Commercial Service Tools

  • Tamper resistant TORX bit: Used for the removal of the driver air bag module.
  • Remover tool: Used to remove clips and pawls.

On-Vehicle Repair

Removal and Installation:

WARNING:

  • Before servicing, turn the ignition switch OFF, disconnect both battery terminals, and wait at least 3 minutes.
  • Always work from the side of the air bag module, never from the front.
  • Never use air tools or electric tools for servicing.

REMOVAL:

  1. Remove the side lids (LH/RH).
  2. Using the tamper-resistant TORX bit (A), remove the TORX bolt (LH/RH).
  3. Pull out the driver air bag module assembly.
  4. Disconnect the driver air bag harness connector. NOTE: Use a thin screwdriver wrapped in tape to lift the lock and remove the connector. Ensure the connector lock is raised during installation and pushed securely into place afterwards.
  5. Remove the driver air bag module.

CAUTION:

  • Always place the driver air bag module with the pad side facing upward.
  • Never insert foreign objects into the driver air bag module.
  • Never disassemble the driver air bag module.
  • Always use new TORX bolts after removal; do not reuse old bolts.
  • Do not expose the driver air bag module to temperatures exceeding 90°C (194°F).
  • Prevent oil, grease, or water from contacting the driver air bag module.
  • Replace the driver air bag module if it has been dropped or sustained an impact.

INSTALLATION:

  1. Install in the reverse order of removal.

CAUTION:

  • Secure the driver air bag module harness to the harness fixing hook (A).
  • Do not damage the harness during installation.
  • Tighten TORX bolts after aligning the fixing holes on the module and steering wheel sides. Misalignment can damage threads and prevent secure installation.
  • If a malfunction is detected by the air bag warning lamp, reset the self-diagnosis function and clear memory using CONSULT-III. If the malfunction persists, perform self-diagnosis for repairs.
  • After work completion, verify no system malfunction is detected by the air bag warning lamp. Refer to SRC-18, "Diagnosis Description".
