Quick Start Guide
Introduction and Overview
This document provides a quick start guide for the Datalogic Skorpio™ X4 Rugged Mobile Computer with 1D/2D Imager. It covers initial setup, installation, charging, synchronization, and scanning capabilities.
General View
The Skorpio X4 features a rugged design suitable for demanding environments. Key components are visible from different angles:
Front View
The front of the device includes the Receiver, Speaker, LEDs, Color Display, Front Scan Key, Keyboard, Trigger Button (for use with an optional pistol grip), and a Reset Key.
Back View
The back view shows the main housing of the mobile computer.
Top View
The top of the device features the Data Capture Window, used for scanning.
Bottom View
The bottom houses the HandyLink™ connector, used for host/device communication.
Keypads
The Skorpio X4 is available with various keypad configurations, designed for compatibility with both Windows Embedded Compact 7 and Android™ operating systems:
- Full-alphanumeric Keypad (50 Keys): Offers a comprehensive layout with numbers, letters, and function keys for extensive input.
- Alphanumeric Keypad (38 Keys): Provides a balanced layout of letters, numbers, and function keys.
- Numeric Keypad (28 Keys): Optimized for numerical input, featuring a standard numeric pad along with function keys.
- Functional Keypad (28 Keys): Includes dedicated function keys for specific operations. (Note: This keypad is only available on Windows Embedded Compact 7 special configurations.)
Diagrams of these keypads are provided in the original document, illustrating the arrangement of keys for each type.
Out of the Box
Upon unpacking, the Skorpio X4 package should contain the following items. Please verify their integrity and compare them with the packing documents:
- Skorpio X4 mobile computer
- Rechargeable battery pack
- Terminal emulation overlay
- Belt clip (for handheld models only)
- Belt clip pivot (for handheld models only)
- Hand-strap
- Lanyard (for pistol grip models only)

- Wavelink Avalanche Insert (for WEC7 radio models only)
- Wavelink Terminal Emulation insert (for WEC7 pistol grip models only)
- End User License Agreement (EULA) Sheet
Important Note: Retain the original packaging for use when sending products for technical assistance. Damage incurred due to improper packaging is not covered under warranty.
Installation and Charging
Battery Installation
To install the battery: Align the battery's lugs with the recesses in the device, then press firmly until the battery latch clicks twice.
SD Card Installation
Follow these steps to install a microSD card:
- Turn off the Skorpio X4 by pressing the power key and waiting for the device to power off.
- Pull the battery latch down and remove the battery pack.
- Shift the cardholder upwards and then pull it up.
- Insert the microSD card with the written part facing upward.
- Lock the card into place by pushing the cardholder down and then shifting it downwards.
- Re-insert the battery pack by aligning its lugs with the recesses and pressing firmly until the latch clicks twice.
Charging Instructions
The battery pack is not initially fully charged. Charge the Skorpio X4 using either the USB cable or the single slot dock.
Charge with USB
Connect a standard micro USB to USB cable to the device and a power supply adapter to charge from a power outlet. Note: Use only a Datalogic-approved power supply.
Charge with the Single Slot Dock
Place the Skorpio X4 into the single slot dock for charging. Note: Do not insert the wall charger into the micro USB port when the Skorpio X4 is inserted into the dock.
Synchronization with PC
Set up Synchronization using Windows Mobile® Device Center
The Windows Mobile® Device Center can be downloaded from the Microsoft website. It is compatible with Windows Vista and Windows 7. For users of Windows XP or earlier, Microsoft ActiveSync should be used.
A connection to your Skorpio X4 can be established through the following interfaces:
- USB (directly or via the Single Dock)
- RS232 (directly or via the Single Dock)
- Bluetooth®
To establish a partnership between the Skorpio X4 and a host PC:
- Connect the Skorpio X4 to the host PC. Windows Mobile® Device Center will automatically configure itself and open.
- Click 'Accept' on the license agreement screen.
- On the Windows Mobile® Device Center Home screen, click 'Set up your device'.
- Select the information types you wish to synchronize, then click 'Next'.
- Enter a device name and click 'Set Up'.
Once the setup wizard is complete, Windows Mobile® Device Center will synchronize the mobile computer. Microsoft® Office Outlook® emails and other synchronized information will then appear on your device.
(Note: This synchronization setup is applicable to Windows Embedded Compact 7 models only.)
Scanning and Imaging
1D Imager Data Capture
The device is equipped with a 1D imager for data capture. The aiming system projects a green light pattern onto the barcode, assisting in accurate scanning.
2D Imager Data Capture
For capturing 2D matrix symbols, the device utilizes its 2D imager. The aiming system pattern helps align the scanner with the symbol for successful reads.
Laser Safety Information
CAUTION: AVOID EXPOSURE. LASER LIGHT IS EMITTED FROM THIS APERTURE. This warning applies to the Laser Aiming System featured on Skorpio X4 variants equipped with a 2D Imager.

For comprehensive information regarding the Skorpio X4, consult the SDK Help online and the Skorpio X4 User's Manual. Both are available for download from the Datalogic website at www.datalogic.com.

Datalogic offers a range of services and technical support through its website:
- Downloads: Access Data Sheets, Manuals, Software & Utilities, and Drawings by selecting your product model from the dropdown list in the 'Search by Product' field.
- Repair Program: Obtain On-Line Return Material Authorizations (RMAs) and find contact information for the Repair Center.
- Customer Service: Find details regarding Maintenance Agreements.
- Technical Support: Contact Datalogic's technical support team via email or phone.
Warranty Terms and Conditions
The standard warranty period is 1 year for the device and 90 days for consumables (such as batteries, power supplies, and cables) from the date of purchase.
