PXL Dot Planning and Specification

Familiarize yourself with all key information in this guide and other relevant ENTTEC documentation before planning or installing your PXL Dot. Contact ENTTEC or your supplier if you have any doubts or plan configurations not covered here. ENTTEC's Return to Base warranty does not cover damage caused by inappropriate use, application, or modification.

Key Safety & Functional Limits

Adhere to the limits defined in this document for PXL Dot layout. If multiple limits apply, follow the lowest. Compliance with UL standards requires respecting these safety and functional limits:

Voltage Drop

Longer cable distances from the power source result in greater voltage drop, potentially causing lower brightness or color shift. This is crucial for custom pixel pitches. Reducing cable length is recommended. For concerns about voltage drop, contact ENTTEC or your reseller.

Physical Dimensions

Note: Lenses are non-removable and recommended to be protected against external impact. Forcing removal will damage the notch on the cover.

Cable Core Identification Chart

Smart PXL DOT strings are supplied with bare end tinned (BET) connectors. The pinout is as follows:

Cable Colour / AWG size24V FunctionPin on Connector

Some accessories have different cable colors. The pinout is as follows:

ENTTEC recommends using cable ferrules for connecting non-tinned cable.

DC PSU Connection

For UL compliance, your power supply must be mounted at least 460mm (18 inches) away from the luminaire. To minimize voltage drop, keep the cable length to the start of the Smart PXL Dots chain as short as possible.

For UL Class 2 luminaire installations, only one Class 2 power unit can power each Smart PXL Dots chain to prevent overload. ENTTEC recommends IP67 rated or above power supplies where applicable.

The total power consumption of a Smart PXL Dots chain complying with UL standard must not exceed:

To determine total power consumption, sum the power consumption for all individual Dots. If UL compliance is not required, contact ENTTEC.

Data Cable Length & Direction

Smart PXL Dots use ENTTEC's proprietary SPXL-16 protocol for sequential addressing, eliminating the need for individual addressing. Each dot has its own data buffering and data re-shaping circuit. Maximum permissible distances between devices are:

Data flows in one direction through each dot, indicated by an arrow on the PCB. If the PCB surface is inaccessible, data direction is as illustrated with respect to the ENTTEC logo on the bottom of the housing.

Diagram illustrating data flow direction.

Control Channels

Each RGB Smart PXL Dot uses 6 DMX channels. Each RGBW Smart PXL Dot uses 8 DMX channels.

The maximum number of dots per data feed depends on the number of data channels per output. Dots are sequentially addressed in a chain based on controller configuration.

Always consider all limiting factors before finalizing your system design.

Smart PXL Dot Control Options

ENTTEC offers controllers for managing Smart PXL Dots. Application diagrams for select controllers are included below. Controllers are optional and sold separately.

Controlling Smart PXL Dots with ENTTEC's OCTO

The ENTTEC OCTO Series is a compact, 4-DIN module device that converts pixel data from Art-Net, sACN, or KiNet, supporting a wide operating voltage. It offers expandable network daisy-chain connectivity up to 100 meters between units, an intuitive web interface for configuration, and basic standalone effects generation.

Key OCTO Installation Guidelines

Note: If power or data source to the controller drops out while Smart PXL Dots are powered, the last state will be held until the data feed resumes or power is disconnected and re-connected.

Installation Guidelines

Always work with a plan that respects system limitations and adheres to safety information.

Surface Installation of Smart PXL60 Dots & Accessories

The Smart PXL60 features 2 x 4.7mm diameter holes for mounting. Cable termination end caps (SKU: 73015) have an M5 hole for screws/bolts.

ENTTEC produces cable accessories for convenience. All accessories use the same connectors as the Smart PXL Dots. Restrain cabling with suitable cable clips every 0.5m.

Catenary Mounting

ENTTEC recommends UV-resistant nylon cable ties (min. 3.52mm width, 50lbs tensile strength) for catenary support of Smart PXL Dots via mounting holes. This prevents rotational stress and ensures cable flex. Position cable ties away from the dot body and heat shrink to prevent strain relief issues, which may void the warranty. Do not tighten cable ties to the catenary cable, as this can cause rubbing and wear on insulation.

Diagram illustrating correct and incorrect catenary mounting with cable ties.

Marking The Surface

Hold a Smart PXL60 Dot or cable termination end cap to the surface and mark hole positions accurately with a pencil, ensuring proper spacing to avoid cable strain.

Protect Smart PXL Dots from debris or swarf while drilling pilot holes.

Servicing, Inspection & Maintenance

Servicing, inspection, and maintenance should only be performed by qualified technicians familiar with this document and the Smart PXL Dot system. Smart PXL Dots and accessories have no user-serviceable parts; replace any damaged components.

Power down the entire system and ensure it cannot be accidentally energized during servicing, inspection, or maintenance.

Key areas to examine during inspection:

If a Smart PXL Dot string or accessory needs replacement, remove it in the reverse order of installation. Replacement parts should be appropriately sized and installed following all guide steps. Contact your reseller or ENTTEC for replacement parts.

Cleaning

Dust and dirt buildup can limit heat dissipation, potentially causing damage. Clean the Smart PXL Dot system on a schedule appropriate for its environment to ensure maximum longevity.

Cleaning schedules vary based on the operating environment; more extreme environments require more frequent cleaning.

Environmental factors that may increase the demand for frequent cleaning include:

If any of these factors are present, inspect the system soon after installation and at frequent intervals to determine a reliable cleaning schedule.
