DC PSU Connection
For UL compliance, your power supply must be mounted at least 460mm (18 inches) away from the luminaire. To minimize voltage drop, keep the cable length to the start of the Smart PXL Dots chain as short as possible.
For UL Class 2 luminaire installations, only one Class 2 power unit can power each Smart PXL Dots chain to prevent overload. ENTTEC recommends IP67 rated or above power supplies where applicable.
The total power consumption of a Smart PXL Dots chain complying with UL standard must not exceed:
- Smart PXL Dot: max. 17 dots.
- The Class 2 or LPS PSU's maximum power rating.
To determine total power consumption, sum the power consumption for all individual Dots. If UL compliance is not required, contact ENTTEC.
Data Cable Length & Direction
Smart PXL Dots use ENTTEC's proprietary SPXL-16 protocol for sequential addressing, eliminating the need for individual addressing. Each dot has its own data buffering and data re-shaping circuit. Maximum permissible distances between devices are:
- Max. distance between SPXL-16 data source: 3000mm
- Max. distance between Smart PXL string interconnects: 3000mm
Data flows in one direction through each dot, indicated by an arrow on the PCB. If the PCB surface is inaccessible, data direction is as illustrated with respect to the ENTTEC logo on the bottom of the housing.

- Keep cable run lengths minimal to avoid electrical noise.
- Avoid running data cabling near power sources or devices emitting electromagnetic noise (e.g., air conditioning units).
- Incorrect data direction will prevent Smart PXL Dots from operating.
Control Channels
Each RGB Smart PXL Dot uses 6 DMX channels. Each RGBW Smart PXL Dot uses 8 DMX channels.
The maximum number of dots per data feed depends on the number of data channels per output. Dots are sequentially addressed in a chain based on controller configuration.
