What is WIRES-X?
WIRES (Wide-coverage Internet Repeater Enhancement System) is an Internet communication system that expands the range of amateur radio communication. By relaying radio signals via the Internet, stations can be connected where radio waves cannot reach each other.
WIRES uses local nodes (stations connected to the Internet via PCs) as access points that repeat communications of conventional amateur radio stations. When local nodes are connected to each other via the Internet, amateur stations worldwide can communicate by simply connecting conventional stations to the local nodes.
A diagram illustrating the WIRES-X system shows two stations, each connected to a local node. These local nodes are then connected to each other via the Internet, enabling communication between the stations.
In addition to WIRES features, WIRES-X also supports digital communications. Using WIRES-X, you can transmit and receive digitalized data such as text, image data, and audio. Using WIRES-X in conjunction with the transceiver allows for analog/digital communications with stations outside the communication range. In digital communication mode, you can search for stations by call signs or keywords and exchange data such as messages and location information.
Terminology
Node: A radio repeater connected to the Internet via a PC, which repeats communications of conventional amateur radio stations as an access point.
Local node: A node within the radio communication range of a conventional amateur radio station.
Analog node: A node that is a transceiver or repeater using the conventional FM format and can only repeat DTMF (Dual Tone Multi Frequencies) codes and analog audio transmissions/receptions.
Digital node: A node that is a transceiver or repeater compatible with digital communications in C4FM (Continuous 4 level FM) format. This type of node allows transmission/reception of audio, text, and image data, as well as repeating DTMF codes and analog audio transmissions/receptions.
A network diagram of the WIRES-X system depicts multiple local nodes connected to a central WIRES server via the Internet. Each local node is shown connected to a PC and a radio transceiver (Station). The diagram indicates that as long as local nodes are linked, stations can communicate by connecting to a local node.
WIRES-X User ID
YAESU provides identification names for WIRES-X nodes. Each node has a DTMF ID (5-digit number) and a user ID (alphanumeric characters up to 10 digits). If you know the ID of the node you wish to connect with, you can transmit the DTMF code from the transceiver and specify the node directly by searching by characters (for digital nodes only).
ID list
Nodes and rooms currently operating WIRES are listed and published on the YAESU website. Information includes IDs, call signs, and operating frequencies (some may be withheld at the owner's request).
Room (Round QSO Room)
A WIRES system community space where multiple nodes can connect simultaneously. Voice communications are supported, along with text chat via the PC used for the local node.
- Open room: Allows all nodes to connect.
- Closed room: Only registered nodes can connect.
- Owner: The node that opens and organizes a room.
- Activity: Nodes currently connected to a specific room.
This diagram illustrates the WIRES-X network architecture, showing stations connected to local nodes via PCs and HRI-200 units. These nodes connect to a WIRES server via the Internet. It highlights that when a local node joins a room, its connected stations also join the room. Example call signs and room names are shown, with a note indicating 'D' for digital nodes and 'A' for analog nodes.
News Function
This feature allows saving digital data (text, image, audio) on the PC used for the local node and accessing it from a connected digital station. You can access the local node (LOCAL NEWS) and the data storage area (news station) to import (upload) and export (download) data. Node/room owners can import/export data via their PC and manage data. The WIRES-X server also hosts a news station (INT NEWS) for YAESU-supplied information.
A diagram explaining the News function shows data flow within the WIRES-X system, illustrating how connecting to a node provides access to data from the local node, WIRES-X server, and other nodes/rooms on the Internet. Data types include audio messages (emergency and normal), news station information, text data, and images. It notes that data from the WIRES-X server is for downloading only.
Preset Search Function
If a preferred channel for connecting to a local node is preset in the transceiver, it can be scanned automatically upon starting WIRES-X. This function allows for quick connection to frequently accessed local nodes by presetting their frequencies. It is also useful for groups to connect to shared channels while mobile. You can use two transceivers as nodes, one for the preset search channel (receive-only) and another for the voice channel (operation).
Connecting to a Faraway Station Using WIRES-X
Finding a Local Node
To communicate using WIRES-X, a WIRES-X node station (local node) must be within radio contact range of your transceiver. WIRES-X nodes are voluntarily registered stations; their information, including locations and operation styles, is available on the YAESU website: https://www.yaesu.com/jp/en/wires-x/index.php.
Use this list to find nearby local nodes and nodes on the Internet. Note the node names and frequencies. Connection procedures differ for digital and analog stations; confirm the node type before proceeding.
- Digital Node: Connect from your transceiver in digital mode. (Internet nodes can connect to both digital and analog stations.)
- Analog Node: Connect from your transceiver in analog mode. (Internet nodes can connect to both digital and analog stations.)
Connecting in Digital Mode
- Ascertain the DG-ID setting of the WIRES-X node station. The transceiver's DG-ID must match the node station's DG-ID.
- Confirm that the WIRES-X node is set to C4FM digital mode.
- Before using WIRES-X, set the communication mode to C4FM.
Connecting to a WIRES-X Digital Node
- Set the transmit/receive DG-ID to match the node station's ID. Refer to the FT5DR/DE Operating Manual for details.
