Overview
The Icom IC-V86 is an analog FM transceiver that covers 144 to 148 MHz on transmit and 136 to 174 MHz on receive. It offers four power output levels: 0.5 W (Low), 2.5 W (Mid), 5.5 W (High), and 7.0 W (Extra High). The radio is supplied with essential accessories including a flexible antenna, a belt clip, a connector cover for the speaker/mic jack, and a 7.2 V, 2,250 mAh Li-ion battery pack. The BC-240 rapid desktop charger, included with the radio, can fully charge the battery in a few hours and features a selectable Extend Battery Life function to prolong battery health.
The IC-V86 is well-supported by a range of optional accessories, including various battery packs, chargers, dc power cables, speaker/mics, headsets, programming cables, and cloning cables. The included Basic Manual is a 16.5 × 23.5 inch sheet, while an Advanced Manual and color brochure are available for free download from the Icom website.

- Automatic repeater offset function in US versions.
- Reverse-duplex function to swap normal transmit and receive frequencies.
- Default VOL knob controls volume; functions can be swapped via menu.
- 1.5 W of audio output from the internal speaker, described as larger than speakers in other handheld radios.
- MIL-STD 810G and IP54 standards compliance for dust and water resistance (when connector cover, optional speaker/microphone, battery pack, and antenna are attached).
Performance and Usability
The radio's display is readable in both sunlight and shadow, with a backlight that can be set to always on, always off, or auto. The auto mode activates the backlight for 4 seconds when a button is pressed. The display remains readable from an angle of approximately 45 degrees.
Keypad usability is generally good, with large keys for most functions. However, the MONI and PWR keys are noted as being quite small, potentially making functions like squelch adjustment difficult, especially when needing to press two keys simultaneously.
The audio quality is clear and crisp, even at full volume, with no distortion. The speaker takes up a significant portion of the front panel, leading to smaller display and keypad areas. While the frequency digits are large and easy to read, smaller icons for other functions may require magnification.
