BEFORE YOU BEGIN
All Wolf looms assemble similarly. A video guide for the Baby Wolf loom assembly is available on the Schacht Spindle Company YouTube channel: youtube.com/user/schachtspindle.
A complete labeled diagram of the Wolf loom can be found in the Maintenance and Warranty manual and on the Schacht Spindle Company website.
The legs of the Wolf loom are named based on how they cross each other. Legs touching the ground at the front are called "inside" legs, as they are covered by the "outside" legs where they cross at the loom's center. The beater is located at the front of the loom, and the brake is on the right side.

INITIAL UNPACKING
- Remove all plastic wrap from the loom. Do not remove the string attaching the beater to the castle.
- Release the brake cord to lower the pedal. Remove the peg from its position above the pedal, but leave it inserted in the loop under the pedal (refer to Figure 1).
- Remove the front beam by unscrewing the front beam screws and barrel nuts holding it in place (refer to Figure 2). Take the front beam completely off the loom. The loom ships with the front extension facing inward to prevent damage.
- Remove the shipping braces on both sides of the loom. Slightly loosen the back beam knobs to free the braces. Discard the shipping braces and tighten the back beam knobs.
- Reattach the front beam. Orient the front beam so its extension faces outward (as shown in Figure 3). Install the front beam in this position with its screws and barrel nuts.
UNFOLDING THE LOOM
- Slightly loosen the black fold knobs on each side of the loom (Figure 1, page 3). Generally, a single turn is sufficient. Loosening the knobs completely or removing them can cause the loom to collapse, potentially resulting in injury.
- Stand at the side of the loom. Hold the front and back beams together slightly. Pull the slide lock bars partially out, toward the back of the loom.
- Continue holding the front and back beams and allow the loom to unfold fully. If the loom is warped, you may need to hold down the brake release pedal with your foot to loosen the warp as you unfold.
- When the loom is fully open, push the fold knobs down to the bottom of the slots in the castle and tighten them. You can push the slide lock bars out of the way.
FOLDING THE LOOM
To prevent treadles from dragging on the floor when folded, attach every treadle to at least one tie-up cord.
- Start folding the loom: Loosen the fold knobs one full turn and pull them up in their slots (Figure 1, page 3).
- With one hand on the rear beam and one hand on the front beam, push the loom together as far as it will go. Tighten the fold knobs.
INSTALLING THE BEATER PEGS
- Loosen the wing nuts holding the top of the beater and remove the beater top. Remove the reed from the beater.
- Insert a 1/4-20 x 2" Phillips truss head machine screw through a 1" plastic beater peg, then through the beater side from its outer side (refer to Figure 4).
- From the inside of the beater, secure the screw with a #12 washer and a 1/4-20 slim lock nut. A wrench may be helpful to hold the lock nut.
- Repeat for the other side of the beater. After both pegs are installed, remove the string tying the beater to the castle.
ATTACHING THE WARP BEAM CRANK HANDLE
The warp beam crank handle attaches to a threaded rod on the right inside leg (refer to Figure 5). Locate the washer, cap nut, and crank handle in the accessory pack. Place the 3/8" washer and then the metal handle on the rod, with the wooden handle facing out. Secure with the 3/8" cap nut.
When weaving, the crank should be pushed off the cap nut. To engage the crank for turning the warp beam, pull the hexagonal hole in the crank onto the cap nut.
ATTACHING THE APRON BARS
There is one cord for each hole in the cloth and warp beams.
- Insert one end of a cord through a hole in the beam and pull the cord through. Then insert the other end through the second hole in the end of the cord that was just put through the beam. Pull firmly on the cord to tighten (refer to Figure 6A).
- Repeat this process across the cloth beam and the warp beam.
- To attach the apron bar to the apron cords, take a pinch of the cord about 4 inches from the end (refer to Figure 6B). Insert the pinched cord through the second hole in the cord. Pull on the pinched cord until a new loop forms, large enough for the apron bar to slip through (refer to Figure 6C). Slide the apron bar through the loop (refer to Figure 6D) and pull tight.
- Repeat until all cords are attached to the apron bar. Attach the other apron bar to its beam similarly.
A video guide for apron cord installation is available at: youtube.com/user/schachtspindle.
INSTALLING HEDDLES
- Remove the shafts from the loom by removing the rubber O-rings and unscrewing the small hex nuts from the jack pins (refer to Figure 7). Pull the shaft straight up and out of the loom. When reinserting the shaft, ensure the jack pin goes back into its hole and is secured with the hex nut. Replacing the rubber O-ring is optional.
- Lay the shaft on a flat surface. Remove the heddle bars if they are already installed by flexing them slightly and pulling one end out of the shaft frame, then removing the other end.
- Lay two heddle bars next to the heddles. Carefully slide a group of heddles onto the heddle bars. Fit one end of each heddle bar into a slot in the shaft frame. Gently flex the heddle bar to fit the other end into the opposing slot. Position approximately half of the heddles at each end of the shaft. Reinstall the heddle bars into the shaft frame and secure them into the heddle bar hooks.
- Put the shaft back into the loom and secure the jack pin with the hex nut (and O-ring if desired). Repeat for the other shafts. Keep the heddles oriented in the same direction for easier threading.
INSTALLING TIE-UPS
There is one tie-up cord for every lamm hole. The two outermost holes on each lamm have metal inserts; thread tie-ups through them as you would any other hole.
- Loop one end of each tie-up through a hole in the lamm. Tie shafts to a treadle by slipping a tie-up into the slot in an inner treadle (refer to Figure 8). Work from the front lamm to the rear lamm for each treadle. After completing the tie-ups, check each treadle by pushing it fully down and releasing it. Ensure the button of each tie-up is against the treadle and that each tie-up hangs straight down.
- The 2 outer treadles on the 8.10 model do not have slots like the 8 inner treadles; they use a hex bolt and thumb screw instead (refer to Figure 9). To attach tie-ups to these treadles, remove the thumb screw. Push the hex bolt towards the front of the loom until its shaft is between the two eye bolts. Loop the button end of the tie-up over the bolt shaft. Slide the bolt back through the rear eye bolt and reattach the thumb nut.
A 1/2" round depression on the underside of each treadle prevents tie-ups from slipping off when the loom is folded.
INSTALLING THE TREADLE AID
The treadle aid prevents shafts from floating. The treadle aid bar is already attached to the rear castle cross brace. Install the 1/4" treadle aid dowel and 10 treadle aid tie-ups onto this bar. Starting at one end, push a treadle aid tie-up up through a hole (an opened paper clip can be helpful) and loop it over the dowel (refer to Figure 10). Continue across the entire treadle aid bar. After attaching tie-ups to the treadles, attach treadle aid tie-ups similarly. It is recommended to use a treadle aid tie-up on all treadles.
INSTALLING THE WHEELS
Skip this step if you will install a stroller on your loom. With the loom unfolded, install the wheels. Use two 1/4-20 x 1-1/2" Phillips truss head machine screws and two 1/4-20 lock nuts to attach each wheel to the rear leg brace (refer to Figure 11).
INSTALLING THE TREADLE TRACKER
With the clip on the treadle tracker facing the front of the loom, insert the treadle tracker into the slot in the top of the upper castle support (refer to Figure 12).
REMOVING THE BACK BEAM
The back beam can be removed for better access to the heddles when threading the loom. Loosen the back beam knobs on each side of the back beam and lift the beam out (refer to Figure 13). To replace the back beam, slide it back into the legs and tighten the knobs.
When moving the loom, lift it using the cloth and warp beams, not the front and back beams.
USING THE BEATER PIN
The small metal pin attached to the right outside leg holds the beater upright during warping. Leave the beater pin in its holder when weaving or folding the loom (refer to Figure 14A). To engage the pin for warping, align the hole in the right outside leg with the slot in the beater side. Insert the pin through the hole and into the slot (refer to Figure 14B).
ADJUSTING THE FRICTION BRAKE
The friction brake can be adjusted by tightening or loosening the eye bolt (refer to Figure 15). This action increases or decreases the tension on the spring, which in turn affects the tension on the brake bar and brake cable.
Always press down on the brake pedal while winding on the warp or advancing the warp on the cloth beam.
ADJUSTING THE BEATER
The height of the beater is factory-set to accommodate most weaving situations. To raise or lower the beater, loosen the two nuts on the inside of each metal beater support. Position the beater at the desired height and tighten the nuts. Ensure both beater sides are at the same height.
