Usage Instructions
Typical LUMIN + N1 System Setup:
The LUMIN N1 integrates seamlessly into your existing audio network. Here’s a typical setup:
- Internet Streaming Services: Provide subscription-based music streaming.
- Router with Wi-Fi: Connects to your ISP and provides Wi-Fi for your devices.
- iPad/iPhone or Tablet: Used to browse music and control your LUMIN system.
- LUMIN L2 or NAS/PC/Mac: Stores and serves music files. A PC/Mac can also rip CDs, download music, and manage files.
- LUMIN N1 Network Switch: This is the core of your audiophile network, connecting your router to your LUMIN Player.
- LUMIN Player: Plays the music and connects to your hi-fi system.
Simplest Network Configuration:
For a straightforward setup, follow these steps:
- Connect your Router with Wi-Fi to the LUMIN N1 using the included CAT5e or faster Ethernet Cable (copper).
- Connect the LUMIN N1 to your LUMIN Player using the included SFP LC Modules and LC Duplex Fibre Optic cable.
Powering On:
Power is essential for all LUMIN N1 functions. Please follow these steps:
- Make all other network connections (Ethernet, Fibre, Clock) first.
- Use the included Mains Power Cable to connect the LUMIN N1 to your Power Outlet. Ensure you use the correct cable type for your country.
- Turn the LUMIN N1 on using the rear switch.
10M Clock Input:
The LUMIN N1 features a BNC 10M clock input for synchronizing with devices that have a 10M clock output (e.g., LUMIN U2X or a 3rd party master clock). This helps minimize jitter for a more stable timing reference.
- Connect your external clock (e.g., LUMIN U2X) to the LUMIN N1’s 10M CLOCK IN port using a 50 Ohm BNC cable.
- The presence of an external clock signal is auto-detected. The front panel LED will indicate whether the internal (INT) or external (EXT) clock is active.
LED Control:
To prevent distractions during music listening, the LUMIN N1 has a physical switch on the rear panel to disable all LEDs, including the Power LED.
- To disable LEDs: Turn the LED ON/OFF switch to ‘OFF’.
- To re-enable LEDs: Turn the LED ON/OFF switch to ‘ON’. LEDs will activate immediately.

A typical LUMIN + N1 system in use
TYPICAL NETWORK
The simplest network uses copper Ethernet from your Router into LUMIN N1 and then Fibre from N1 into your LUMIN Player:

10M CLOCK
LUMIN N1 has a BNC 10M clock input for synchronising with devices that have a 10M clock output such as LUMIN U2X or a 3rd party master clock.
This approach can help minimize jitter by ensuring all devices are operating on a consistent and stable timing reference.
Simply connect your clock via the BNC input using a 50 Ohm BNC cable

The presence of an external clock signal is auto-detected and a front panel LED displays whether the internal or an external clock is active.

POWER
Power is required for all LUMIN N1 functions.
Make all other connections first and then use the included Mains Power Cable to connect LUMIN N1 to your Power Outlet.
Then turn LUMIN N1 on using the rear switch.

LEDS
Because network port LEDs and other status LEDs can be a distraction during music listening, LUMIN N1 has a physical switch on the rear panel to disable these.
Once turned to ‘OFF’, all LEDs including the Power LED will be disabled.
If required (e.g. when troubleshooting), the LEDs can be immediately activated again using this switch.

Troubleshooting
- No Power: Ensure the power cable is securely connected to both the LUMIN N1 and the power outlet. Check that the rear power switch is in the ‘ON’ position.
- No Network Connection (Copper): Verify that the RJ45 Ethernet cable is properly connected between your router and the LUMIN N1. Check your router’s status.
- No Network Connection (Fibre): Ensure the SFP LC Modules are correctly inserted into both the LUMIN N1 and your LUMIN Player, and that the LC Duplex Fibre Optic cable is securely connected to the modules.
- No Sound from LUMIN Player: Confirm that your LUMIN Player is properly connected to your hi-fi system and that all network connections to the LUMIN N1 are active.
- Distracting LEDs: If the LEDs are distracting, use the rear LED ON/OFF switch to turn them off.
- Clock Synchronization Issues: Ensure your 10M external clock is powered on and connected with a 50 Ohm BNC cable. Check the front panel clock LED to confirm if ‘EXT’ is active.
