Getting Started. User Interface. Header Section: Control Panel
The header section, or Control Panel, is where you control the main settings and functionalities of the app.
Play/ Stop
FILL ► Button
The FILL ► button is a dynamic feature designed to enhance your live performances and spontaneous jamming, allowing you to introduce fills and transitions with ease.
- When the drummer is stopped (not playing): Pressing the FILL ► button will trigger a fill that plays for one complete bar. After the fill ends, the drum machine will seamlessly transition into the main rhythm.
- When the drummer is playing: Pressing the FILL ► button will insert a fill into the current bar. The fill will continue through the next bar, and then the drum machine will stop playing.
- Typically, this stop is punctuated by a kick and cymbal hit, giving your performance a natural and stylish conclusion, in line with the app drummer’s style.
- Cancelling the Fill Conclusion: While the fill is playing, you can press the FILL ► button again to cancel the automatic stop at the end of the fill. This action allows the drummer to continue playing the main rhythm after the fill, without interruption. This feature is ideal for keeping the energy going during live performances, letting you extend the groove and add fills on the fly without stopping the rhythm.
This makes the FILL ► button an essential tool for creating seamless transitions, dynamic breaks, and maintaining control over your live drumming performance.
COUNT
The “Count” feature provides a countdown before the rhythm starts playing. It typically counts off four beats (1, 2, 3, 4) to help you prepare before the music begins.
Use the “Count” feature when practicing or recording to ensure you’re perfectly timed from the first beat.
TAP (BPM)
Use the TAP button to set the tempo manually. Tap the button in time with the desired beat to adjust the beats per minute (BPM) to match your rhythm. This is useful for quickly matching the tempo to a song or a specific musical idea.
Tempo Display: This digital display shows the current beats per minute (BPM). It updates in real-time as you adjust the tempo.
Tempo Adjust Buttons (+/-): These buttons allow you to increase (+) or decrease (-) the tempo incrementally.
Drummer Style
In some of our apps (Rock, Funk, Reggae, Soft, Jazz), you have the option to change the drumming style. This feature adapts the improvisation and fills (not the sound). The Drummer button, located beside the 2D Slider, allows you to set the drumming style to your preference.

Think of it as a “subdrumming” style. For example, in Reggae drummer, you can choose between Classic, Modern, and Contemporary Reggae drumming styles.
In some apps, this feature may be available as an In-App Purchase.
Humanize
The Humanize function brings a more natural, human touch to your drum patterns. Instead of having every beat hit perfectly on time and with the same strength, this feature introduces small variations in timing and intensity, just like a real drummer would. It helps
make your drum grooves feel more dynamic and less mechanical, adding life and expression to your music.

How to Use
- Find the Humanize Button: Look for the button with this icon  to access the Humanize feature.
- Adjust the Humanize Effect: You can control how much variation to apply. Start with a lower setting for subtle changes or increase it for more dramatic, human-like fluctuations.
- Play and Fine-Tune: Listen to how the pattern feels, and adjust the setting until you get the groove just right.
2D Slider
The 2D Slider is an intuitive tool for controlling Jam and Intensity levels. The horizontal axis adjusts the Jam level, determining the amount of drumming improvisation—from none (full left) to maximum (full right). The vertical axis controls the Intensity, ranging from very soft (full down) to very strong (full up). The standard intensity is in the middle, and the control tends to snap to this point, like a magnet, for balanced drumming.
This control helps you effortlessly achieve the perfect combination of jam improvisation and intensity for your drum patterns.
Note: In some apps like Future Drummer, Reggae Drummer, AfroLatin Drummer, Indian Drummer, Brazilian Drummer, and Hip-Hop Drummer, the Jam Intensity button has a slightly different design.
Swing
The Swing feature allows you to adjust the rhythmic feel of your drum patterns by adding or reducing swing, creating a more dynamic groove. Swing alters the timing of the notes, giving them a “shuffle” feel that makes the rhythm sound more human and less mechanical. Swing is applied as a 16th note swing, meaning every second 16th note in a pair is delayed, creating a “lopsided” or “groovy” feel.
Hip Hop Drummer and Future Drummer include an advanced swing feature called Flex Swing. This feature allows you to apply individual swing settings to each track with greater flexibility. You can adjust the swing for either 8th or 16th notes, and even apply negative swing, which shifts the timing of notes in the opposite direction for a unique rhythmic feel. This is perfect for creating modern hip hop swing styles, like those popularized by J Dilla and other producers, where offbeat, shuffled rhythms give the music a laid-back, yet intricate groove.
Next to the Swing button, an eye icon (?️) (iPad) or “SHOW SWING” button (iPhone) toggles the visual representation of swing adjustments in the rhythm editor.
Flex Swing Hip Hop Drummer (iPhone)
Toggle Ride / Hats
This button allows you to easily switch between the ride cymbal and hi-hat patterns in your drum track. This feature is particularly useful for quickly changing the feel of your drum grooves without having to manually edit the entire pattern.
- Ride Cymbal: Typically used in jazz, rock, and many other genres, the ride cymbal creates a more open, sustained sound that can add a wider sound, flowing feel to your groove.
- Hi-Hat: Often used in funk, pop, and electronic music, the hi-hat provides a tighter, more controlled rhythm, adding a sharper, more driving feel to your beat.
- By pressing the Toggle Ride / Hats button, you can seamlessly switch the pattern from hi-hat to ride cymbal or vice versa, instantly altering the character and texture of your drum track. This makes it easy to experiment with different rhythmic feels and find the perfect sound for your music.
Toggle Cross / Snare
This button allows you to switch between playing cross-stick (or “cross-stick rim click”) and snare drum hits in your drum patterns. This feature is particularly useful for varying the dynamics and texture of your drum grooves without having to manually edit the pattern.
- Cross-Stick: A technique where the drummer lays the drumstick across the drumhead and strikes the rim, creating a softer, clicking sound. This is often used in ballads, softer sections of songs, or genres like bossa nova and jazz to provide a subtle, laid-back groove.
- Snare Drum: The traditional snare hit produces a sharper, louder, and more pronouncedsound, commonly used in rock, pop, hip-hop, and many other genres to drive the rhythm and add a strong backbeat to the music. By pressing the Toggle Cross / Snare button, you can instantly switch between cross-stick and snare drum hits, allowing you to quickly change the character and dynamics of your drum track. This feature is great for creating contrasting sections within a song or for experimenting with different sounds to find the perfect groove for your track.
Live Fill
The Live Fill button allows you to seamlessly add drum fills to your drum patterns in real-time, enhancing your performances and making your drum tracks more dynamic. A drum fill is a short, often improvised rhythm played on the drums that provides a transition between different sections of a song, adding excitement and variation. This feature is especially useful for adding spontaneity and realism to your drumming, making your tracks sound more like a live drummer’s performance.
Effect Buttons (Comp, EQ, Delay, Reverb)
These buttons provide quick access to activate audio effects directly from the main screen (available only on iPad):
- Comp: Compressor for dynamic range control.
- EQ: Equalizer to adjust frequencies.
- Delay: Delay effect for echo.
- Reverb: Reverb for adding space and depth.
You can find more detailed controls for these effects in the central effects menu (●●●) and also in the lower section of the app under the button called EFFECTS
Mixer Button:
The Mixer button allows you to control the volume, panning, and other parameters of individual instruments in your drum kit. This feature is essential for balancing your mix and fine-tuning the sound of each element.
On iPad: The Mixer is integrated with the effects controls (Comp, EQ, Delay, Reverb) on the main screen. You can adjust each instrument’s parameters while simultaneously accessing the effects, providing a streamlined workflow for comprehensive sound design.
On iPhone: The Mixer appears as a standalone section, separate from the effects controls. This layout ensures that you can focus on adjusting the mix with a clear and uncluttered interface. To access the effects (Comp, EQ, Delay, Reverb), you will need to navigate to a different button specifically for effects.
Link
The Link button in the app enables Ableton Link integration, allowing you to synchronize the tempo and timing of your drum patterns with other apps and devices that support Ableton Link. Ableton Link is a technology that keeps multiple devices in time over a shared network connection, making it easy to jam with others or use multiple music apps in perfect sync.
Enable Link: When you tap the Link button, the app connects to any active Ableton Link session on the same Wi-Fi network. This synchronizes the tempo and beat grid of your drum patterns with other connected apps and devices.
Real-Time Synchronization: Once enabled, any changes in tempo or start/stop actions will be mirrored across all devices in the Ableton Link session. This ensures that all apps and devices stay perfectly in sync, even as you adjust the tempo or start and stop playback.

Flexible Collaboration: Ableton Link is ideal for collaborative sessions, live performances, or simply using multiple music apps together. You can mix and match different apps and devices to create a richer, more versatile music-making setup.
By using the Link button, you can easily integrate your drum app into a larger ecosystem of music production tools, enhancing your creative possibilities and ensuring tight, synchronized performances.
Tip: Before activating “Link,” ensure all devices and apps you wish to sync are connected to the same Wi-Fi network and have Ableton Link enabled.
Cloud Botton
Tap the “Cloud” button to save your presets, Rhythms, Songs and Live Pad Sets to your cloud account, allowing you to access them from any device logged with your Apple ID.
Info Button
The “Info” button provides quick access to other Lumbeat apps, social media links, the official Lumbeat website, and a way to report bugs.
- Access direct links to Lumbeat’s social media pages, such as Instagram, X, Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok, where you can find tutorials, updates, and community interactions.

Export Button
The Export button in the app allows you to save your drum patterns and grooves as audio or MIDI files, enabling you to use them in other music production software or share them with others. This feature provides flexibility in how you manage and utilize your drum tracks outside the app.
Export Options
- Audio: Exports the drum patterns as an audio file, which can be either a full mix or separate tracks for each drum part.
- Full Mix: Select this option to export the entire drum pattern as a single stereo audio file. This is useful when you want a quick and easy way to use the drum track in another project without needing to adjust individual drum parts.
- Multi-Track: Choose this option to export each drum element (e.g., kick, snare, hi-hat) as separate audio files. This gives you more control over mixing and processing each drum sound individually in a digital audio workstation (DAW).
- MIDI: Exports the drum patterns as a MIDI file, which can be imported into a DAW to trigger different drum samples or virtual instruments. This is ideal for users who want to customize the drum sounds or further edit the performance in their DAW.
Bar Length and End Bar Options
Bars: Adjust the number of bars you want to export by tapping the minus (-) or plus (+)buttons. This lets you export a specific section or loop of your drum pattern. • End Bar: Determines where the exported loop will end. This is helpful for creating precise loops or defining specific sections of your drum track. By using the Export button, you can easily integrate your drum tracks into broader music projects, offering versatility for both live performances and studio productions.
Song Mode
Switch to Song Mode for arranging multiple patterns into a full song. This mode allows you to sequence different patterns to create a complete track.
New Groove
The New Groove button (+ in iPhone) provides a convenient way to create fresh drum patterns by allowing you to set various parameters for hi-hats (or ride cymbal), snare, and kick drum patterns. This feature enables you to quickly generate new grooves with different rhythmic feels and time signatures, helping you experiment with new ideas or start a drum pattern from scratch. Depending on the app’s style, the available options may vary, offering different rhythmic feels.
Time Signature and Measure Settings
There are two ways to set the measure in the app:
- Beats and Subs (Subdivisions):
This option allows you to manually set the number of beats and subdivisions per beat. For example:- Setting Beats to “4” and Subs to “4” for the most common measure: 4 beats with 4 subdivisions.
- Setting Beats to “4” and Subs to “3” creates a shuffle or triplet feel, with three subdivisions per beat.
- Setting Beats to “3” and Subs to “4” would create a 3/4 feel, often used in waltzes.
- Time Signature:
This is the formal way to set the time signature using standard musical notation. For example:- Choosing 4/4 gives you the most common time signature, with four beats per measure and each beat divided into two (or four) subdivisions.
- Selecting 12/8 gives you a compound meter with four beats, each divided into three subdivisions, often used in blues or ballads. (equivalent to 4 Beats, 3 Subs)
- For more complex rhythms, choosing 7/8 creates an irregular time signature with seven beats per measure, offering a more unique or progressive groove.
These two methods give you the flexibility to create grooves that range from standard rhythms to more unconventional patterns.
Pattern Options
Hats/Ride Selection: Toggle between Hats (hi-hats) and Ride (ride cymbal) to choose which percussion element you want to focus on. You can then select the pattern density:
- None: No hi-hat or ride pattern.
- Beats: Places hi-hat or ride hits on the main beats.
- Eighths: Adds a pattern with eighth-note divisions, creating a faster rhythm.
- Sixteenths: Creates a dense, faster pattern with sixteenth-note divisions.
- Random: Generates a random hi-hat or ride pattern for a more unpredictable rhythm.
Snare Pattern: Choose from different snare placements:
- None: No snare pattern.
- Beats: Places snare hits on the main beats, giving a straightforward rhythm.
- Off Beats: Adds snare hits on the off beats, providing a syncopated feel.
- Random: Generates a random snare pattern.
Kick Pattern: Set the kick drum pattern to:
- None: No kick drum pattern.
- Beats: Adds kick hits on the main beats.
- On Beats: Places the kick hits on strong beats to emphasize the rhythm.
- Random: Create a random kick drum pattern for a unique groove at your own risk.
- Cancel: Discards the current settings and exits the New Groove screen without making any changes.
- Adapt Current Groove: This powerful feature lets you take your existing drum pattern and seamlessly adapt it to new time signatures or subdivisions, preserving the core feel while adjusting the groove to fit the new settings. Whether you’re switching from 4/4 to a more complex time signature like 7/8, or just adding more rhythmic detail with extra subdivisions, this option allows for creative exploration without losing the essence of your original pattern.
Example: If you have a basic rock groove in 4/4 and adapt it to 12/8, the app will intelligently restructure the beat, turning it into a smooth shuffle, while maintaining the original rhythmic idea. It’s perfect for evolving your groove into different musical contexts without starting from scratch.
OK: Confirms your selections and applies the new groove settings to create a completely new drum pattern based on the parameters you’ve set.
Randomize
The Random button on the main screen generates random drum grooves and, if the Sound Lock button is unselected, also randomly changes the drum soundset. This feature allows you to quickly explore new rhythmic patterns and sonic textures. When Sound Lock is enabled, only the groove is randomized, keeping the current drum sounds intact. This makes the Random button perfect for sparking creativity and discovering unique combinations of beats and sounds.

By sending your current drum groove to another Lumbeat drum app, the receiving app creates and adapts the rhythm to its specific style, allowing you to mix and blend various genres seamlessly. This feature is perfect for experimenting with unique combinations and creating innovative, genre-blending drum tracks.
Connecting with other Lumbeat apps gives you more sounds and grooves to play with, making your music even more exciting and creative. It’s like having a whole band of tools at your fingertips, ready to help you explore new musical ideas.
MIDI Button
The MIDI button in Lumbeat apps gives you access to a complete control center for all your MIDI connections. Tapping this button lets you:
MIDI In:
Select incoming MIDI sources, allowing the app to receive signals from external devices or apps.
- MIDI Out: Set up MIDI outputs, to send the app’s signals to other devices or apps, allowing you to control sounds or sync patterns.
- MIDI Clock: Sync the app’s tempo with other devices or apps that support MIDI Clock.
- MIDI Channel: Set the specific MIDI channel the app will use to send and receive data.
- MIDI MAP and MIDI CONTROLS: Customize MIDI control mapping and map drum sounds to specific notes, improving integration with other gear and software.
Middle Section: Rhythm and Sound Library
The middle section features the Rhythm and Sound Library, where you can select different rhythm banks, individual rhythms, and drum sounds.
BANK Selection
Choose from various rhythm banks like Rock, Grunge, FunkRock, etc. Each bank contains a collection of rhythms suited to a particular style.
RHYTHM List
Browse and select individual rhythms within the chosen bank. This list displays the names of the rhythms available in the selected bank.
SOUND Selection
Choose different drum sounds and kits. This list allows you to select from a variety of drum sounds to customize your rhythm.
Additional Options
(+) Add or modify rhythms and sounds. This button lets you expand your library by adding new rhythms or modifying existing ones.
Loock Groove Button
This button allows you to lock your current groove. When activated, the groove pattern you have selected will be “locked,” meaning it won’t change or be affected by any randomization or accidental adjustments. This is useful when you’ve found a groove you like and want to keep it exactly as it is while you experiment with other settings or features.
Menu
This button expands the footer menu, allowing you to quickly access features that are also available in the main navigation bar below. It provides an easy way to reach options like Pattern Editor, Sounds, Mixer, Effects, Jam, Live Pads, and more, all from one convenient place.
Favorite Button
The Favorite button lets you quickly save a groove to your favorites list. Just tap the button when you find a groove you love, and it will be easy to find and play again later.
Bottom Section: Pattern Editor and Navigation Bar
The bottom section includes the Pattern Editor and Navigation Bar, allowing you to edit drum patterns and navigate between different modes and features.
PATTERN EDITOR
Edit and customize drum patterns using a grid interface. Each cell in the grid represents a beat or a part of the beat, and you can add or remove hits to create your desired pattern

NAVIGATION BAR
Switch between different app modes such as EDIT, PATTERNS, SOUNDS, MIXER, EFFECTS, JAM, LIVE PADS, BASIC, and FULL. Each mode provides specific tools and features for different aspects of your drumming experience.
Save/Replace/Rename/Delete Buttons: Manage your custom patterns and settings with these buttons:
- Save: Save your current pattern or settings.
- Replace: Replace an existing pattern with the current one.
- Rename: Change the name of your pattern.
- Delete: Remove a pattern you no longer need.
