  1. I purchased an LAP L3291S-B (767CC) on 17 May last year (2020).
For the first year or so, it worked very well, but since the start of the summer the light hasn’t worked at all well.
The light is very dim (so much so that it shines next to no light) though it still works.
    Any suggestions?

    Question

Why is my LAP L3291S-B (767CC) wall light very dim and how can I fix it?

    Answer

Based on the manual for the LAP wall-mounted light series, here are the relevant details regarding your issue:

    • Non-Replaceable LEDs: The technical data specifies that the light source (LED 20W) is contained within the luminaire and is not designed to be replaced by the user. If the LEDs have dimmed significantly, it usually indicates a failure of the internal driver or the LED array itself.
    • Dimming Compatibility: The manual explicitly states that this product is not suitable for dimming. If the light is connected to a dimmer switch, this could cause the dim output or damage the internal components.
    • Maintenance: Ensure the surface of the light is clean. The manual recommends a regular schedule of care using a soft dry cloth; avoid using scouring pads, abrasive cleaners, or solvents as these can damage the finish or lens.
    • Warranty Information: LAP products typically come with a 3-year guarantee from the date of purchase. Since you purchased the unit in May 2020 and reported the issue while it may still be under warranty, you should contact the retailer (Screwfix) with your proof of purchase. The guarantee covers faults that develop within the period, though it excludes fair wear and tear or misuse.

If the light is not on a dimmer and cleaning the lens does not help, the unit likely has an internal fault and should be replaced under warranty.

  2. Can you wire the light from a 3 pin plug

Anonymous asks Can you wire the light from a 3 pin plug
    Manuals+ clarified question
    Question

Can the LAP wall-mounted light be wired using a 3-pin plug?

    Answer

The manual for the LAP Wall Mounted Light (Model L3292S-B) specifies that it is a Class I product and must be connected to earth. While the instructions primarily illustrate a fixed installation to a mains supply via a wall switch or consumer unit, it is technically possible to wire it to a 3-pin plug provided you follow these safety requirements:

    • Earthing: You must use a 3-core cable to ensure the green/yellow earth wire is connected to the earth pin of the plug.
    • Cable Type: The manual specifies using a round mains cable with a minimum diameter of 6mm to ensure a proper water seal at the entry point. Do not use flat cable.
    • Fuse: The plug should be fitted with an appropriately rated fuse (typically 3A or 5A for a 20W LED light).
    • IP Rating: If the light is installed outdoors, the plug must be connected to an IP-rated outdoor socket to maintain the product's IP44 splash-proof protection.

The manual recommends that all fittings be installed by a competent person in accordance with local wiring regulations (such as IET BS7671). If you have any doubt, consult a qualified electrician.

    Wiring Color Code:
L (Live) = Brown or Red
N (Neutral) = Blue or Black
    Earth = Green / Yellow

Note: Modifying the intended installation method may affect your warranty or the IP44 weather sealing if not done correctly.

Disclosed uncertainty: The manual does not explicitly forbid plug-in use, but it is designed and documented as a fixed-wire luminaire.

  3. Can you wire the light from a 3 pin plug

Jim asks Can you wire the light from a 3 pin plug
    Manuals+ clarified question
    Question

Can the LAP wall-mounted light be wired from a 3-pin plug?

    Answer

Based on the provided instruction manual, this LAP wall-mounted light is designed to be permanently installed and hardwired directly into the mains electrical supply, not powered by a 3-pin plug.

The manual specifies several key points that indicate a hardwired installation:

    • Professional Installation: It states that "All fittings must be installed by a competent person in accordance with local regulations (IET wiring regulation BS7671)."
    • Wiring Method: The installation diagrams on page 10 show connecting the mains supply wires (Live, Neutral, and Earth) directly to the terminal block inside the light fitting. There is no mention or provision for a plug and cord.
    • Safety First: The instructions require the mains power to be switched off at the consumer unit or fuse box before installation (page 9), which is standard practice for hardwiring fixtures.
    • Weatherproofing: For the IP44 (splash-proof) rating to be valid, the connection must be properly sealed. The manual specifies using a round mains cable with a minimum diameter of 6mm to create a good water seal at the cable entry point (page 1). Using a flexible cord from a plug may not achieve this required seal.

For safety and to ensure the product functions correctly and maintains its weather-resistant properties, you should follow the manufacturer's installation instructions. If you are unsure, it is highly recommended to consult a qualified electrician.

    Manuals+ clarified question
    Question

How do I configure the settings for my LAP PIR wall-mounted light?

    Answer

The LAP Wall Mounted Light (Model L3292S-B) features three adjustable dials on the PIR sensor unit to customize its operation:

    • TIME: Adjusts how long the light stays on after motion is detected. It ranges from approximately 10 seconds (turned fully counter-clockwise) to 5 minutes (turned fully clockwise).
    • SENS (Sensitivity): Controls the detection distance. It can be set between 2 meters and 10 meters.
    • LUX: Determines the light level at which the sensor becomes active. Turning it toward the sun icon allows it to operate during the day and night; turning it toward the moon icon ensures it only operates at night.

    Sensor Override Mode:

    • To activate constant light (override the sensor), switch the power OFF and ON within 3 seconds.
    • To return to automatic sensor mode, switch the power OFF for more than 5 seconds and then back ON.

Note: Adjustments should be made using a tool, and the power should be switched off before making changes to ensure safety.
