3 Product description

3.1 Product operation

The idSET-OTM Sensor utilises capacitive measurement and can be connected to Labkotec Oy’s idSET-OTM central units.
The sensor provides the central unit with information on the oil layer accumulated on the oil separator.
The sensor is a category 1 device and can be installed in potentially explosive atmospheres in zoned areas 0, 1 and 2.

4 Installation

4.1 General installation instructions

idSET-OTM Sensors can be installed in zone 0 explosive atmospheres. Do not remove the sensor markings from the cable or sensor frame.
After emptying, the sensor must always be filled with water at least up to the lower electrode to eliminate the possibility of a potential difference between the sensor and the environment.
Read Section General safety instructions before installation.
The sensor can be installed to hang from a wire, for example (see the following figure). The sensor can also be inserted into a specialised non-conductive installation pipe, which standardises the installation height.
When installing, please keep the suspension wire away from grounded conductive structures to eliminate any capacitance that may form a combustion risk. If this cannot be avoided, the wire must also be grounded.
Leave a sufficient length of the sensor or extension cable coiled inside the service well, for example, so that you can easily lift the sensor out for inspection and cleaning.

4.2 idSET-OTM sensor installation

The sensor must be installed when the liquid is at the standard level of the separator (bottom edge of the outlet pipe) and there is no oil in the separator. The installation height is correct when the counter electrode (1.1) barely touches the liquid (approx. 5 mm). The length of the suspension wire can be adjusted roughly to the right length according to the instructions in Figure 5 . Fine-tuning is possible by turning the rigging screw. The suspension heads with opposite threads enable fine-tuning when the sensor is hanging in place. If the sensor needs to be installed when there is oil in the separator, this must be taken into account in the installation height. The height is correct when the counter electrode length in the oil equals to 0.1 x the thickness of the oil layer. It is recommended to check the installation height later when there is no oil in the separator. The total surface level in the separator may not drop below the bottom edge of the outlet pipe. A drop in the total surface level shall be indicated to the sensor as a corresponding oil level up to 200 mm. If the surface drop level exceeds 200 mm, a low liquid level alarm shall be triggered. The sensor can measure oil layers up to 400 mm, when the oil density is between 765… 900 kg/m^3. The alarm engagement point can be determined with the idSET-OTM control unit. The sensor provides a notification if the separator’s total surface level is outside the measurement range (e.g. the sensor is above the surface or too deep in the liquid).

NOTE! When the sensor is lowered through the oil layer, lubrication oils in particular may stick to the sensor surface for several hours, resulting in the oil thickness indication being 1020 mm too high.

6 Functional test

12/19

Always check the correct operation of the alarm after the installation and after making the connections. You should also check the operation every time the separator is emptied or at least once every six months.

6.1 Checking the functioning of the idSET-OTM with the idSET-OTM control unit

Functional test:

1.

The operation of the sensor can be checked by lifting it in the air, and the

central unit will sound an alarm.

2.

Lowering the sensor back into the water will clear the alarm.

For a more detailed description of the operation of the central unit,

please refer to its user manual.

Clean the dirty sensor when checking its operation before putting it back in the separator.

If the sensor does not function as described, check the device settings from the control unit’s operation and installation manual or contact the representative of the manufacturer.

7 Maintenance

13/19

The sensor must always be cleaned when emptying the separator and at least once every six months in the context of maintenance inspections. You can clean the sensors with washing-up liquid and paper towel or a cleaning cloth, for example. Due to static charge, the paper or cloth must be moist and you should also avoid rubbing motions. To facilitate cleaning of the idSET-OTM Sensor, the counter electrode can be removed by loosening the three screws at the top.
Do not use corrosive substances to clean the sensor.
The idSET-OTM Sensor does not feature wearing or replaceable parts.

8 Troubleshooting

14/19

8.1 Troubleshooting the idSET-OTM Sensor with an idSET-OTM control unit

PROBLEM: Explanation:
Action:

EXPLOSION HAZARD! Observe the installation and maintenance instructions for explosive atmospheres! The measuring device must be Exi classified if the sensor is in an explosive area.

Remember to set the idSET-OTM control unit in maintenance mode so that the alarms during the maintenance measures are recorded in the inspection log instead of the alarm log. For detailed instructions on how to set the device in maintenance mode, please refer to the central unit’s operation and installation manual.

The sensor cable wires are not numbered because the voltage polarity (+ or -) makes no difference.

Fault alarm is on.

The sensor cable is short-circuited, cut or disconnected from the connector. The sensor could also be damaged.

1.

Measure voltage separately from that sensor’s sensor connectors. Check the correct voltage value in the manual of the central unit.

2.

If the voltage is correct, measure the current drawn by the sensor as follows:

2.1 Disconnect the sensor wire from the central unit’s left-hand side sensor connector.

2.2 Connect an mA meter as shown in the figure below.

2.3 The SENSOR connectors hold 13 sensors. The measured current is the total current drawn by the sensors. The current values of the different sensor types can be found in the technical data of the sensor manuals while the current of idOil-OTM Sensor is 9.011 mA.

2.4 Reconnect the disconnected wire after the measurement.

The measurement can also be carried out on the separator end by opening the cable extension.
