Work area safety

  • Keep the work area clean and well-lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.
  • Do not operate products in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust. Products create sparks that may ignite the dust or fumes.
  • Keep children and bystanders away while operating a product. Distractions can cause you to lose control.

Electrical safety

  • Product plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) products. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce rthe isk of electric shock.
  • Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces, such as pipes, radiators, ranges, and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded.

Personal safety

  • Stay alert, watch what you are doing, and use common sense when operating a product. Do not use a product while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medication. A moment of inattention while operating Products may result in serious personal injury.
  • Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as dust masks, non-skid safety shoes, hard hats, or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.
  • Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position before connecting to a power source and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the product. Carrying products with your finger on the switch or energizing products that have the switch on invites accidents.
  • Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the product on. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the product may result in personal injury.
  • Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the product in unexpected situations.
  • Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry. Keep your hair and clothing away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewelry, or long hair can be caught in moving parts.
  • If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used. The use of dust collection can reduce dust-related hazards.
  • Do not let familiarity gained from frequent use of products allow you to become complacent and ignore tool safety principles. A careless action can cause severe injury within a fraction of a second.

Product use and care

  • Do not force the product. Use the correct product for your application. The correct product will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.
  • Do not use the product if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any product that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
  • Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or remove the battery pack, if detachable, from the product before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing Products. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the Product accidentally.
  • Store idle products out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the product or these instructions to operate the product. Products are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
  • Maintain products and accessories. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts, and any other condition that may affect the product’s operation. If damaged, have the product repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained products.
  • Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.
  • Use the product, accessories tool bits, etc. by these instructions, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the product for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.
  • Keep handles and grasping surfaces dry, clean, and free from oil and grease. Slippery handles and grasping surfaces do not allow for safe handling and control of the tool in unexpected situations.

Battery tool use and care

  • Recharge only with the charger specified by the manufacturer. A charger that is suitable for one type of battery pack may create a risk of fire when used with another battery pack.
  • Use products only with specifically designated battery packs. Use of any other battery packs may create a risk of injury and fire.
  • When the battery pack is not in use, keep it away from other metal objects, like paper clips, coins, keys, nails, screws, or other small metal objects, that can make a connection from one terminal to another. Shorting the battery terminals together may cause burns or a fire.
  • Under abusive conditions, liquid may be ejected from the battery; avoid contact. If contact accidentally occurs, flush with water. If liquid contacts the eyes, additionally seek medical help. Liquid ejected from the battery may cause irritation or burns.
  • Do not use a battery pack or product that is damaged or modified. Damaged or modified batteries may exhibit unpredictable behavior resulting in fire, explosion, or risk of injury.
  • Do not expose a battery pack or product to fire or excessive temperature.
    Exposure to fire or temperature above 130 °C may cause an explosion.
    NOTE: The temperature “130 °C” can be replaced by the temperature “265 °F”.
  • Follow all charging instructions and do not charge the battery pack or product outside the temperature range specified in the instructions. Charging improperly or at temperatures outside the specified range may damage the battery and increase the risk of fire.

Service

  • Have your product serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the product is maintained.
  • Never service damaged battery packs. Service of battery packs should only be performed by the manufacturer or authorized service providers.

LAWN TRIMMER AND LAWN EDGE TRIMMER SAFETY WARNINGS

  • Do not use the product in bad weather conditions, especially when there is a risk of lightning. This decreases the risk of being struck by lightning.
  • Thoroughly inspect the area for wildlife where the product is to be used. Wildlife may be injured by the product during operation.

  • Keep all cooling air inlets clear of debris. Blocked air inlets and debris may result in overheating or risk of fire.
  • Wear eye protection and ear protection. Adequate protective equipment will reduce personal injury.
  • While operating the product, always wear nonslip and protective footwear. Do not operate the product when barefoot or wearing open sandals. This reduces the chance of injury to the feet from contact with the moving cutters.
  • Always wear clothing such as trousers that cover the operator’s legs while operating the product. Contact with the moving cutter or line may cause injury.
  • Keep bystanders away while operating the product. Thrown debris can result in serious personal injury.
  • Do not operate the product above waist height. This helps prevent unintended cutter contact and enables better control of the product in unexpected situations.
  • Exercise caution when operating the product on wet grass. Walk, never run. This reduces the risk of slipping and falling which may result in personal injury.
  • Do not operate the product on excessively steep slopes. This reduces the risk of loss of control, slipping, and falling which may result in personal injury.
  • When working on slopes, always be sure of your footing, always work across the face of slopes, never up or down, and exercise extreme caution when changing direction. This reduces the risk of loss of control, slipping, and falling which may result in personal injury.
  • Keep all power cords and cables away from the cutting area. Power cords or cables may be hidden in hedges or bushes and can be accidentally cut or damaged by the line or cutter.
  • Keep all parts of the body away from the moving trimmer cutter or line. Do not clear material from the machine until it has been disconnected from the power source. The moving trimmer cutter or line may result in serious personal injury.
  • Carry the product with the product switched off and away from your body. Incorrect replacement parts may cause loss of control, breakage, and injury.
  • Only use replacement cutting heads and trimmer cutters or lines specified by the manu-facturer. Do not replace the trimmer cutters or lines with metal wires or blades. Incorrect replacement parts may cause loss of control, and increase the risk of breakage and injury.

CAUTION
Use only Kobalt 80-volt batteries (KB 280C-06, KB 2580C-06, KB 480-06, KB 580C-06, KB 680C-06). Use only Kobalt charger (KRC 0280-06, KRC 30-06, KDC 50-06).

WARNING (PROPOSITION 65)
Some dust created by power sanding, sawing, grinding, drilling, and other construction activities contains chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. Some examples of these chemicals are:

  • Lead from lead-based paints.
  • Crystalline silica from bricks and cement and other masonry products, and
  • Arsenic and chromium from chemically treated lumber.

Your risk of exposure to these chemicals varies depending on how often you do this type of work. To reduce your exposure to these chemicals, work in a well-ventilated area, and work with approved safety equipment, such as dust masks that are specially designed to filter out microscopic particles.

PREPARATION

Before beginning assembly of the product, make sure all parts are present. Compare parts with the package contents list and hardware contents list. If any part is missing or damaged, do not attempt to assemble the product.

ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS

Installing the upper handle

  • Raise the upper handle so that the mounting holes align with the holes on the lower handle.
  • Insert the quick-release clamps (BB) and securely tighten the handle knobs (AA) on the opposite ends.

Adjusting the handle position

  • Pull the lower handle (H) to the operation position.
  • Secure the handles in one of the two positions by aligning the handlebars with the mounting holes at the base of the shafts.
  • Insert the bolts (CC) through the handles and the bracket. Securely tighten the handle knobs (AA) onto the bolts.

Note: Make sure that the two handles are in the same position.

Setting the cutting height
The product can be set to different cutting heights.

  • Use a 3/16 inch (5 mm) hex key (not included) to loosen the nut on the side of the spindle shaft.
  • Slide the trimmer head (F) upward or downward to the desired position.
  • Retighten the nut.

Installing/removing the battery

  • 4a. To install battery
    • Make sure that the batteries are fully charged.
    • Open the battery door.
    • Push the batteries into the battery compartment. The batteries lock into position when you hear a click.
    • Make sure that the batteries are installed correctly.
    • Insert the safety key (I).

  • 4b. To remove battery
    • Release the bail lever.
    • Remove the safety key (I).

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Starting/stopping the product
    • Push and hold the start button (B), then grab the bail lever (A) in the direction of the handlebar.
    • Once the product has started, you can release the start button.

      WARNING
      Wait until the motor stops before you remove the battery.
  2. Cutting tips
    • Tilt the product toward the area to be cut. Use the tip of the cutting line to cut grass.
    • Wire and picket fences cause cutting line wear and breakage. Stone and brick walls, curbs, and wood can wear the cutting line quickly.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE

    • 3b. Remove any leftover cutting line (G) from the trimmer head.

  4. Transportation and storage
    • Follow special packaging and labeling requirements for commercial transportation, including by third parties and forwarding agents.
    • Seek advice from a person with special training in dangerous materials before shipping the prod-uct and complying with all applicable national regulations.
    • Use tape on open contacts when packaging the battery and ensure it is securely packed to prevent movement.
    • Remove the battery before storing or transporting the product.
    • Store the battery and battery charger in a dry, moisture-free, and frost-free space.
    • Avoid storing the battery in an area where static electricity may occur, and do not store it in a metal box.
    • Charge the battery 30% to 50% before long-term storage.
    • Store the battery charger in a closed and dry space.
    • Keep the battery away from the battery charger during storage, and ensure that unauthorized persons, including children, do not touch the equipment. Store the equipment in a lockable space.
    • Clean the product and perform full servicing before long-term storage.
    • Use transportation guards on the product to prevent injury or damage during transportation and storage.
    • Securely stow the product during transport to ensure safe handling.

PROBLEM

POSSIBLE CAUSE

CORRECTIVE ACTION

The product stops when you are cutting. A heavy cutting line is used. Use with the nylon cutting line of 0.118” /0.157 ” (3.0/ 4.0 mm) diameter.
The grass winds around the motor shaft or the trimmer head. 1.     Stop the product.

2.     Remove the battery.

3.     Remove the grass from the motor shaft and trimmer head.

The motor is overloaded. 1.     Remove the trimmer head from the grass.

2.     The motor will recover as soon as the load is removed.

The battery pack or product is too hot. 1.     Allow the battery to cool until its function returns to normal.

2.     Allow the product to cool for approximately 10 minutes.

The battery pack is disconnected from the tool. Reinstall the battery.
The battery pack is depleted. Charge the battery.
The line keeps breaking. The product is used incorrectly. Cut with the tip of the line, avoid stones, walls and other hard objects.
The grass winds around the trimmer head and motor housing. Cut tall grass at ground level. Cut tall grass from the top down.
The handle is not in position. The bolts are not installed correctly. Adjust the height of the handle and make sure that the knobs and bolts are aligned correctly.
The product does not start. The battery capacity is low. Charge the battery.
The bail lever is defective. Replace the bail lever.
The product cuts grass unevenly. The height is not set correctly. Adjust to a higher position.

5-YEAR LIMITED WARRANTY

  • This Kobalt 80 V 22 in. wheeled string trimmer is warranted to the original purchaser from the original purchase date for five (5) years subject to the warranty coverage described herein.
  • This Kobalt 80 V 22 in. wheeled string trimmer is warranted for the original user to be free from defects in material and workmanship.
  • If you believe that the Kobalt 80 V 22 in. wheeled string trimmer is defective at any time during the specified warranty period, simply call our Warranty service (888-356-2258) along with proof of purchase.
  • This warranty is void if: defects in materials or workmanship or damages result from repairs or alterations which have been made or attempted by others or the unauthorized use of non-conforming parts; the damage is due to normal wear, damage is due to abuse (including overloading of the tool beyond capacity), improper maintenance, neglect or accident; or the damage is due to the use of the tool after partial failure or use with improper accessories or unauthorized repair or alteration.
  • This warranty excludes replacement cutting lines.
  • This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights that vary from state to state.
