Prior to installing any composite cladding system, it is recommended that you check local building regulations for any special requirements or restrictions.

Loftræsting

For proper installation, SUIR products cannot be attached directly to a flat surface. They must be installed on a substructure to allow for continuous and unobstructed airflow underneath. This ventilation is critical to prevent excessive moisture absorption and ensure a minimum of 25 mm of net free area for air to circulate between adjacent cladding members. This promotes effective drainage and drying.

Heat & Fire

When SUIR products are exposed to excessive heat from external sources like fire or reflected sunlight, it can cause damage. Low-E glass, which is designed to reduce heat gain inside a building, can concentratethe sun’s reflection and create an intense heat buildup on exterior surfaces. This extreme temperature can cause SUIR products to melt, warp, sag, or discolor. It may also lead to increased expansion and contraction and accelerated weathering. If you are a current or potential customer concerned about possible damage from Low-E glass, you should contact the manufacturer of the window product for a solution to minimize the effects of reflected sunlight.

Festingar

For face fastening SUIR products, screws must always be driven at a 90-degree angle to the cladding surface. Never “toe screw” these products. If a 90-degree angle can’t be achieved, add an extra joist.

When two board ends meet, each board must rest on its own independent joist. This requires a sister joist so that the end of each board is properly supported. To ensure straight lines, use white chalk, a straight board, or a string line as a guide.Never use colored chalk, as it can permanently stain the product. All face-fastened screws should be stainless steel. If you notice any bulging or “mushrooming” around the screw heads, gently tap them down with a rubber mallet for a smoother finish. For best results and to avoid damaging the cladding, use screws specifically designed for composite wood. Check with your local hardware store for these specialized screws,as other types may not be suitable and could cause harm to the product.

Predrill

For face-fixing the boards and trims to the joists, it’s recommended to use a 4 mm screw. To allow for the material to expand and contract with temperature changes, you should predrill the screw holes on both the boards and the trims slightly larger than the screw itself. This will prevent damage and ensure the proper performance of the material.Suir-Composite-Slatted-Cladding-fig (1)

Í smíðum

For your substructure, we recommend using either aluminum or pressure-treated wood joists. To ensure proper support, each cladding board must be supported by a joist placed no more than 500 mm on center. You will need to take extra care when adding joists around obstacles like windows, fascias, soffits, guttering, or ventilation points to provide sufficient support.

Joists Installation

Always consult a building professional regarding the proper use of vapor barriers and insulation for your project. If a vapor barrier is used, it should be a breathable type and installed behind the joists. The joists themselves must have a minimum thickness of 25 mm. Wood joists should be securely fastened at a maximum of 500 mm on center. All joists must be flat and level against the wall surface, so use shims as needed to achieve this. A minimum gap of 20 mm needs to be left at the bottom of each joist opposite the floor.

Stækkun og samdráttur gildi

SUIR cladding boards will naturally expand and contract with temperature changes. This movement is most noticeable in areas with extreme temperature fluctuations. To accommodate for this, you must follow the specific gapping requirements outlined in the installation guide. Proper gapping allows the boards to move freely without being damaged, ensuring a long-lasting and stable installation.Suir-Composite-Slatted-Cladding-fig (4)

Cladding should be acclimatised on site for 72 hours before installation.

Installing the First Board
Secure the board to the joist using a cladding clip. Also, be sure to maintain the required gaps between the cladding boards, edge and corner trims, and any adjacent walls. Refer to the “Expansion and Contraction Values” table to determine the correct gap size for your installation. This is crucial for preventing buckling or warping of the cladding.

Managing Expansion & Contraction (Locking Your Cladding Boards)

Composite materials naturally expand and contract with changes in temperature. To ensure the longevity and stability of your Suir Composites cladding, it is crucial to secure each board at specific points, allowing the rest of the board to move freely. Failing to follow these instructions can lead to buckling, warping, or damage.

  • Predrill Before Locking: To prevent splitting, cracking, or damage to your composite boards and ensure a clean, secure fix, you must pre-drill a pilot hole through the cladding board before inserting any locking screw. Use a drill bit slightly smaller than the screw’s diameter.
  • Locking Screw vs. Fixing Screw: A “locking screw” is specifically designed to pass through the board, fixing it to the joist at a designated point. All other clips are secured to the joist without piercing the board, allowing for free movement.
  • Location is Key: The placement of these locking screws is different for vertical and horizontal installations. Please refer carefully to the detailed diagrams below for the precise location of locking screws for your chosen installation method.
  • Minium Gap of 20mm needs to be left at the bottom of each joist.
