This manual provides instructions for the Arlo Essential Indoor Camera 2nd Generation, including the Essential Indoor Camera 2K (VMC3060) and Essential Indoor Camera HD (VMC3060).
1. Get to Know Your Essential Camera 2nd Generation
The Arlo Essential Indoor cameras (2nd Generation) offer advanced features for home security and monitoring.
Get the Arlo Secure App
Download the Arlo Secure App from your phone's app store or scan the QR code to create an Arlo account and manage your devices. Ensure you are using the latest version of the app.
Meet your Essential Indoor Camera
The camera features a Privacy Shield, Ambient light sensor, Microphone, Status LED, Speaker, Pairing button, Power cable, Mounting hole, and Base.
Privacy Shield
The Privacy Shield can be opened and closed using the Arlo Secure App.
Features

2. Get Started
Use the Arlo Secure App for setup
The Arlo Secure App guides you through the setup and installation process. Connect to your Wi-Fi network and create an Arlo account. You can also access your account via a web browser at https://my.arlo.com/#/login.
Onboarding your camera with the Arlo Secure App
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Connect the camera to power using the included USB-C cable and power adapter.
- Ensure your phone is connected to the internet and Bluetooth is turned on.
- In the app, navigate to Devices, tap the Plus icon (+), select Cameras, Essential Series, then Essential Cameras 2nd Generation.
- Press the camera's pairing button for 3 seconds. The LED will flash blue when ready to connect.
- Select your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network and enter the password.
- Name your camera and select Continue.
- The camera will check for firmware updates.
- Follow the app's guidance for placement and mounting.
Find a good location for your camera
Choose a location with a clear vantage point and a strong Wi-Fi signal. Check signal strength in the Arlo Secure App. Refer to "Tips for optimal Wi-Fi performance" on page 11 for more details.
Wall mount your camera
- Secure the mount with screws, using drywall anchors if needed. Ensure arrows on the mount point upwards.
- Attach the camera to the mount by sliding the base down until it clicks. Align arrows upwards.
- Tilt and swivel the camera to adjust the angle.
Use the pairing button to wake up the camera
Press and hold the pairing button for 3 seconds. The camera wakes, and the LED flashes blue for two minutes. Follow app instructions to add the camera.
Check the LED
The LED indicates the camera's status:
- Slow blinking blue: Pairing to Wi-Fi network.
- Fast blinking blue: Paired and connected to Wi-Fi.
- Blinking amber: Out of range or connection error during pairing.
- Alternating blue and amber: Firmware update in progress.
Test motion detection
Customize motion sensitivity in the Arlo Secure App:
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap Devices, then the Menu icon (...).
- Tap the Device Settings icon (⚙️) next to your camera.
- Tap Default Mode Settings > Motion Detection Test.
- Move in front of the camera; the LED blinks amber when motion is detected.
- Adjust the motion sensitivity slider as needed. Note the setting for use in rules.
- Edit your camera's rule to apply the desired motion sensitivity.
Position your camera to detect motion in specific areas
Position the camera for side-to-side motion across its field of view. Optimal motion detection is between 5 to 20 feet (1.5 to 6 meters) from the camera.
3. Wi-Fi Setup and Connections
Tips for optimal Wi-Fi performance
Maintain a distance of up to 300 feet (90 meters) from your router. Walls and obstructions can reduce range. Keep cameras at least 6.5 feet (2 meters) apart to minimize interference. Materials like thick walls, brick, concrete, stone, ceramic, glass, metal, and large water quantities can reduce Wi-Fi signal strength.
Change your camera's Wi-Fi connection
- Enable Bluetooth on your device.
- Open the Arlo Secure App and log in.
- Tap Devices, then the Menu icon (...).
- Tap the Device Settings icon (⚙️) next to your camera.
- Tap Connected to.
- Select Change Network.
- Follow on-screen instructions to connect to a new Wi-Fi network.
4. Use Your Indoor Camera
The Arlo Secure App dashboard provides access to your camera feeds and controls.
View your camera feeds
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap Play ▶️ on the camera feed to stream live video.
- Tap Stop ⏹️ to stop viewing.
Pan and zoom your video feed
On mobile: Pinch to zoom, touch-and-drag to pan. On computer: Double-click to zoom, left-click and drag to pan. Video quality improves after a brief buffer.
Enable or disable your Privacy Shield
The Privacy Shield opens when the camera is set to respond to motion or sound.
To enable your Privacy Shield:
- Launch the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap Routines.
- Select Arm Away, Arm Home, or Standby.
- Tap Add Device Rules > Save.
To disable your Privacy Shield:
- Launch the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap Routines.
- Select Arm Home or Standby.
- Select your Arlo Essential Indoor Camera under Rules.
- Tap the Motion Detected or Audio Detected switch.
- Tap Delete Rules.
Foresight
The camera records continuously, discarding video if no motion is detected after three seconds. Foresight ensures recordings start before motion occurs.
Record clips from live video
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap Devices and select your camera.
- Tap the camera feed.
- Tap Record ⏺️ to begin recording (icon turns red).
- Tap Record ⏺️ again to stop. (Manual recording is not available with Local Live Streaming).
Take a snapshot from live video
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap Devices.
- Select your camera.
- Tap Snapshot ?. The snapshot is saved to your feed.
Customize your camera feed image
Change the order of camera feeds on the Devices page, or zoom and rotate the feed 180 degrees.
Change the camera order
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap Devices.
- Tap the Menu icon (...).
- Drag and drop cameras to reorder.
- Tap Done.
Motion detection activity zones
Designate specific zones for motion detection and recording.
Add an activity zone
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap Devices, then the Menu icon (...).
- Tap the Device Settings icon (⚙️) next to your camera.
- Tap Activity Zones.
- Tap the Plus icon (+). An activity zone box appears.
- Move the zone to the desired position.
- To reposition, tap and hold the zone.
- To customize the name, tap the Edit icon (✏️), enter a name, and click Rename (or click > next to the zone name on a web browser).
- Tap Save.
Change an activity zone
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap Devices, then the Menu icon (...).
- Tap the Device Settings icon (⚙️) next to your camera.
- Tap Activity Zones.
- Tap a zone to select it.
- Move the zone to the desired position.
- To reposition, tap and hold the zone.
- To customize the name, tap the Edit icon (✏️), enter a name, and click Rename (or click > next to the zone name on a web browser).
- Tap Save.
Delete an activity zone
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap Devices, then the Menu icon (...).
- Tap the Device Settings icon (⚙️) next to your camera.
- Tap Activity Zones.
- Tap a zone to select it.
- On iOS, slide the zone left and tap Delete. On Android, slide the zone left.
2-Way Audio
The camera supports 2-Way Audio.
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap Devices and select your camera.
- Tap the Microphone icon (?). Allow Arlo to use your phone's microphone.
Mute/Unmute 2-Way Audio
A "Tap to mute" button appears below the camera feed to toggle mute on and off.
Turn off 2-Way Audio
Tap the 'x' in the upper-left corner of the page.
Turn the camera siren on and off manually
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap Emergency.
- Tap Activate Siren. Select a camera if prompted.
- Swipe the siren icon to the right to turn it on.
- Tap the slider on the Devices page to turn it off.
View recordings and snapshots
Your camera stores recordings and snapshots in the feed. Use the filter and calendar to find specific recordings.
Access cloud recordings
Recordings are stored in your Arlo account in the cloud and are encrypted. Access them via the Arlo Secure App or at https://my.arlo.com/#/login. An Arlo Secure subscription is required.
Use the Feed
Navigate recordings by date using the Feed > Calendar option.
Use the filter
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap Feed.
- Tap the Menu icon (...)
- Tap Filter Type.
- Select or deselect filter types.
- Tap Done.
Turn off the filter
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap Feed.
- Tap the Menu icon (...).
- Tap Reset.
- Tap Done.
Download recordings
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap Feed.
- Tap a recording.
- Tap the Menu icon (...).
- Tap Download.
- Tap OK to confirm.
Make a recording a favorite
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap Feed.
- Tap the Menu icon (...).
- Tap Favorite.
Share recordings
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap Feed.
- Tap the Menu icon (...).
- Tap Share.
- Share the file.
Delete recordings
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap Feed.
- Tap a recording.

- Tap Delete.
- Tap OK to confirm.
5. Routines, Modes, Automations, and Alerts
Arm or disarm your Arlo devices and configure their behavior based on different situations.
Arm or disarm all your Arlo devices
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap Routines, then Modes.
- Tap Arm Away, Standby, or Arm Home.
Modes
Arlo modes control how cameras respond to motion or sound. Pre-set modes include:
- Arm away: Protects your home inside and out when you're away.
- Arm Home: Keeps certain devices armed while you are home.
- Standby: Disarms devices, keeping specific ones armed.
Customize device activity within modes, e.g., arming outdoor cameras and disarming indoor cameras while sleeping.
Select a mode
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap Routines.
- Tap Modes.
- Select your camera.
- Tap a mode to activate it. The selected mode becomes active immediately.
Mute Notifications
Temporarily silence push notifications while video recording continues. This is useful for events like parties.
To mute notifications:
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap your Profile > Notifications.
- Select the duration to mute notifications.
To unmute notifications:
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap your Profile > Notifications > Unmute.
Rules for modes
Modes use rules to control your Arlo system. Options include:
- Trigger device: Adjust motion and sound sensitivity to minimize false alarms.
- Action device: Configure devices to respond to triggers (e.g., start recording).
- Notifications: Send push notifications, email alerts, or both for triggers.
Change motion sensitivity
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap Devices, then the Menu icon (...).
- Tap the Device Settings icon (⚙️) next to your camera.
- Select Default Mode Settings.
- Under Motion Detection, adjust the sensitivity slider.
- If using a browser, click Save.
Change audio detection sensitivity
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap Devices, then the Menu icon (...).
- Tap the Device Settings icon (⚙️) next to your camera.
- Select Default Mode Settings.
- Under Audio Detection, adjust the sensitivity slider.
- If using a mobile device, settings are saved automatically. If using a browser, click Save.
Use a routine to activate the camera's siren
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap Routines.
- Select Automations.
- Tap Add an Automation or the Plus icon (+).
- Add Schedule > Action.
- Tap Activate Siren, then Next.
Manage alerts
Arlo can send push notifications and email alerts. Ensure the Arlo Secure App is installed on your phone to receive notifications. Logging out of the app will stop push notifications.
Schedule when your camera is armed
Set schedules to automatically arm and disarm cameras weekly.
To schedule when your camera is armed:
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap Routines.
- Tap the Plus icon (+) and then tap Add Schedule.
- Specify the time.
- Select your device and tap Save.
- Tap Add Action, then Change Mode.
- Select Arm Away, Arm Home, or Standby.
- Tap Save.
Edit a schedule
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap Routines.
- Select Automations.
- Tap the schedule you want to modify.
Detect audio alarms with your camera
An Arlo Secure subscription is needed for Alarm Detection. This feature notifies you when the camera detects smoke or carbon monoxide alarms. Recordings are made until activity stops or for a specified duration (up to 300 seconds).
Compatible alarms
Test alarm compatibility. Recognized alarms include:
- Smoke detectors with T3 alarms (three intermittent beeps).
- Carbon monoxide (CO) detectors with T4 alarms (four intermittent beeps).
Examples of compatible detector models: Kidde i9050, USI5304, First Alert 0827, First Alert P1210, First Alert SCO5.
Prepare a location to test your alarm compatibility
Ensure your alarm can emit a continuous T3 or T4 pattern for 30 seconds. Avoid locations with echoes or loud background noise. Ensure no motion occurs during the test.
Test your alarm for compatibility with Alarm Detection
- Place the camera within two feet of your alarm for testing.
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Go to your profile and select your camera location.
- Tap Smart Notifications, then select a camera.
- Tap the Question Mark icon (?) in the top right.
- In Audio Alerts, select Smoke/CO Alarm and ensure Other Audio is turned off.
- Follow on-screen instructions to test your alarm. The camera must be within 2 feet of the alarm.
- Press the alarm's test button for 30 seconds.
Alarm Detection test results
- Alarm Detection is working: You receive an Audio Alert notification and a "Smoke/CO alarm" video clip.
- Arlo recorded a video but didn't notify you: The camera detected the sound but not as a smoke/CO alarm. This could be due to incorrect alarm pattern, background noise, or incompatibility. Retest if necessary.
- Arlo didn't notify you or record a video: The camera is too far from the alarm. Move the camera closer and retest.
Test the Alarm Detection range
- Place the camera in the desired location.
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Ensure Smoke/CO Alarm is selected and Other Audio is turned off in Audio Alerts settings.
- Close the Arlo Secure App (do not log out).
- Press the smoke or CO detector's test button for 30 seconds.
- Aim the camera toward the area of highest interest to view relevant videos upon notification.
Turn off push notifications after using audio detection
Push notifications must be enabled for Arlo Secure audio detection. Edit rules to disable push notifications after turning off audio detection and alerts. (See "Change audio detection sensitivity" on page 23).
To turn off push notifications:
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap Emergency.
- Tap the Menu icon (...).
- Tap Smart Notifications.
- Select a camera.
- In the Audio Alerts section, deselect the sliders for Smoke/CO Alarm and All Other Audio settings.
6. Change Your Settings
View and change settings for your Arlo devices using the Arlo Secure App.
Camera settings
Access camera settings by tapping Devices and selecting the camera, or by tapping the Device Settings icon (⚙️) or Menu icon (...) below the camera feed.
Change the camera name
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap Devices, then the Menu icon (...).
- Tap the Device Settings icon (⚙️) next to your camera.
- Tap the camera.
- Tap Edit next to Camera. Enter a new name (max 32 characters), e.g., Garage or Front Door.
- Tap Save.
Change the time zone
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap Profile.
- Select Home > Time Zone.
- Tap a time zone. Click Save if using a computer.
Video Settings
Change the video quality
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap Devices, then the Menu icon (...).
- Tap the Device Settings icon (⚙️) next to your camera.
- Tap Video Settings > Video Resolution.
- Select 2K, 1080p, or 720p.
Rotate the image 180 degrees
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap Devices, then the Menu icon (...).
- Tap the Device Settings icon (⚙️) next to your camera.
- Tap Video Settings.
- Tap Rotate Image 180.
Turn night vision on and off
Night vision automatically activates infrared (IR) LEDs in low-light conditions. Turn it off if the camera faces reflective surfaces like windows.
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap Devices, then the Menu icon (...).
- Tap the Device Settings icon (⚙️) next to your camera.
- Select Night Vision.
- Tap Night Vision (or use the slider on Android).
Adjust the flicker setting
Adjust flicker settings to reduce flickering in recorded video caused by artificial light sources and shutter speed. The default is Auto.
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap Devices, then the Menu icon (...).
- Tap the Device Settings icon (⚙️) next to your camera.
- Tap Video Settings > Flicker Adjustment.
- Tap a setting.
Change the audio settings
Adjust settings for wind noise, microphone, and speaker volume.
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap Devices, then the Menu icon (...).
- Tap the Device Settings icon (⚙️) next to your camera.
- Select Audio Settings.
- Adjust settings:
- Microphone toggle: Turns the microphone on/off.
- Speaker toggle and volume: Tap Speaker to turn on/off, use the Speaker Volume slider to adjust volume.
Adjust recording length
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap Devices, then the Menu icon (...).
- Tap the Device Settings icon (⚙️) next to your camera.
- Select Default Mode Settings.
- Under Recording Length, select "Record until activity stops" (up to 5 min) or "Record for a fixed length" (10 seconds to 2 mins).
Restart the camera from the Arlo Secure App
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap Devices, then the Menu icon (...).
- Tap the Device Settings icon (⚙️) next to your camera.
- Tap your camera.
- Scroll down and tap Restart.
View device information
View firmware version, hardware version, and serial number.
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap Devices and select your device.
- Tap the Device Settings icon (⚙️) next to your camera.
- Tap your camera.
Remove a device from your account
- Open the Arlo Secure App.
- Tap Devices and select your device.
- Tap the Device Settings icon (⚙️) next to your camera.
- Tap your camera.
- Select Remove Device.
7. Troubleshooting
Arlo doesn't discover your camera during setup
Check the following:
- Ensure the correct camera model is selected in the Arlo Secure App. Check the camera's model number on the box.
- Verify the Wi-Fi network SSID and password are correct (case-sensitive).
- Keep your mobile device and camera within Wi-Fi range of your router (10-15 feet recommended during setup).
- Check the camera LED during setup. It should blink blue for discovery and fast blue for connection. If it times out, press the pairing button again.
Can't see video streams in a browser
Ensure ports 443 and 80 are open on your router. Refer to "Wi-Fi signal interference" (page 34) and "Out of range" (page 34) for troubleshooting.
Wi-Fi signal interference
Minimize the number of Wi-Fi networks, devices, and frequencies in the camera's area. Consult your router's instructions or ISP for Wi-Fi settings adjustments.
Out of range
Ensure the camera has a strong Wi-Fi signal (three or four bars recommended). Signal strength may fluctuate.
Not receiving push notifications
You must be logged into the Arlo Secure App to receive alerts. If you logged out, log back in. Alerts are received even when the device is sleeping.
Check the Arlo Secure App notification settings on an iOS device
- Tap Settings for your iOS device.
- Tap Notifications > Arlo.
- Ensure "Allow Notification" is selected.
Check the Arlo Secure App notification settings on an Android device
- Tap Settings for your Android device.
- Tap Application Manager > Arlo.
- Ensure "Show Notifications" is selected.
If you said no to push notifications at installation
Select "Allow" during initial setup. For iOS, if you missed the prompt, uninstall and reinstall the app after a day, or simulate a day by adjusting your device's system clock.
Use the pairing button to reset the camera
The pairing button is used for factory resets, waking the camera, and Wi-Fi pairing.
Reset the camera to its factory settings
- Press and hold the pairing button for about 15 seconds until the LED blinks amber.
- Ensure the LED blinks amber three times after releasing the button. If held too long, restart the process.
- After a factory reset, the camera appears disabled in the Arlo Secure App.
- To remove it, go to Devices, select your camera, tap Settings, scroll down, and tap Remove Device.
- To add the camera back, tap the Plus icon (+) on the Devices page and follow the prompts.
Power cycle and reset the camera
Unplug the USB cable from the power adapter, then re-plug it to perform a hardware reset and power cycle.
