Product Overview & System Capabilities
The Eagle Explorer by Eagle Electronics is a handheld 12-channel parallel GPS receiver engineered for outdoor navigation, hiking, hunting, marine use, and general positioning. The device continuously tracks available GPS satellites to calculate geographic coordinates, ground speed, heading, and altitude.
The receiver is governed by the standard civilian GPS positioning accuracy specification of 100 meters horizontally and 150 meters vertically for 95 percent of the time. The unit is designed as an electronic navigation aid and should not serve as a sole navigation source in hazardous or life-critical environments.
Keypad Controls & User Interface
Operation of the Eagle Explorer is managed through dedicated front-panel pushbuttons designed for one-handed and field operation.
-
PWR / LIGHT: Powers the receiver on or off when held. When the unit is active, pressing PWR toggles the screen backlight for low-light visibility.
-
PAGES / MODE (WINDOWS): Cycles sequentially through major display screens and primary window groups (Group A through Group O).
-
MENU: Opens contextual menus for the active screen and provides access to the System Setup and GPS Setup configuration menus.
-
EXIT: Clears active pop-up menus, dismisses warning screens, cancels numeric entries, or returns to the previous display page.
-
ENT / ICON: Confirms menu selections and data entries. On plotter screens, pressing ENT opens the icon placement menu.
-
Arrow Pad (Up, Down, Left, Right): Navigates through on-screen menus, scrolls through character lists during text entry, and shifts the plotter cursor.
-
ZIN / ZOUT (CENTER): Zooms in (ZIN) or zooms out (ZOUT) on plotter and moving map screens. Pressing both simultaneously centers the map on current position.
-
WPT / GO TO: Opens the waypoint management screen for saving, editing, recalling, and activating direct navigation to saved waypoints.
Power Options & Installation
The Eagle Explorer operates from internal batteries or an external direct-current power supply connected via the external power port.
-
Internal Battery Operation: Install fresh cells into the rear battery compartment following the polarity indicators molded inside the tray.
-
External Power Input: The unit accepts external DC power between 6 and 16 volts DC using the optional CA-2 vehicle cigarette lighter adapter cable.
-
Direct Wiring: For permanent marine or vehicle installations, connect the power cable's red wire to a fused positive 12V DC power source and the black wire to vehicle ground.
Initial Setup & Satellite Acquisition
When turning the Eagle Explorer on for the first time or after transporting it long distances while powered off, initialize the receiver to establish rapid satellite acquisition.
-
Take the unit outdoors to a location with a clear, unobstructed view of the open sky away from tall buildings, dense tree canopies, or overhead structures.
-
Press and hold the PWR key until the screen turns on.
-
Read the start-up safety message on the display and press the EXIT key to clear the message.
-
Press MENU, scroll to GPS Setup using the arrow keys, and press ENT or the Right Arrow key.
-
Select Initialize or Starting Position, then enter your approximate latitude, longitude (within one degree), local time, and current date.
-
Press ENT to save the initialization parameters and return to satellite search mode.
-
Allow the receiver several minutes in a stationary position to download orbital ephemeris data and acquire a multi-satellite 2D or 3D fix.
Navigation & Plotter Displays
The Eagle Explorer provides multiple graphic and numerical navigation screens organized in customizable window groups.
-
Nav Screen #1 (Compass Rose): Features a circular 360-degree compass display. Your current position is located in the center with an arrow pointing upward, and track direction indicated toward the compass ring.
-
Course Deviation Indicator (CDI): Displays cross-track error to indicate if your heading drifts left or right of the desired course line. CDI sensitivity can be modified via the ALARMS/CDI menu.
-
Plotter Screen: Provides a birds-eye moving map displaying your track trail, active waypoint destination, and origin. Use ZIN and ZOUT to scale the view.
-
Plotter Orientation: Configure map display orientation through Plotter Options to either North-Up (top of screen is true north) or Track-Up (rotates map to match current travel direction).
-
Clear Plot Trail: Select ClearTrail in the Plotter Options menu and press the Right Arrow key to erase the recorded movement path from the screen.
-
Map Icons: Place any of the 15 available graphic symbols on the plotter screen to designate campsites, fishing spots, hazards, or docks.
-
Satellite Status Screen (Group O): Shows 12 individual bar graphs representing signal reception quality and PRN identification numbers for all tracked satellites.
Waypoint & Route Management
The unit allows users to store custom geographic positions as waypoints, modify names and coordinates, and sequence waypoints into multi-leg travel routes.
-
Quick-Save Position: Press the WPT key, select Quick Save from the menu, and press ENT. The unit automatically stores current coordinates and assigns a numerical name.
-
Manual Coordinate Entry: Press WPT, select Add Waypoint, enter specific latitude and longitude values using the arrow keys, and press ENT.
-
Naming Waypoints: Open Waypoint Options, select Edit Name, and input an alphanumeric name of up to 8 characters using the arrow pad.
-
Calculating Distance: In the Waypoint Options menu, select Dist Btwn WPTS to calculate direct range and bearing between any two saved points.
-
Creating a Route: Navigate to the Routes menu, select Create Route, and choose Insert From WPTS to sequentially add waypoints in order of travel.
-
Navigating a Route: Select Follow Route from the route menu and press ENT. The receiver guides you to the first waypoint and automatically switches to each subsequent leg upon arrival.
-
Canceling Navigation: Press MENU while navigating, highlight Cancel Navigation, and press ENT.
System Setup & Coordinate Configuration
The System Setup and GPS Setup menus configure measurement units, coordinate formats, map datums, and serial data interfacing.
-
Units of Measure: Configurable for statute miles (MI), nautical miles (NM), or metric kilometers (KM).
-
Position Formats: Supports Degrees/Minutes/Seconds, Degrees/Decimal Minutes, and Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) grid coordinates.
-
Map Datums: Pre-programmed with 189 map datums worldwide, defaulting to WGS-84. Match the selected datum to your paper navigational charts.
-
PCF (Position Correction Factor): Allows manual latitude and longitude offsets to align GPS coordinates with local chart grids.
-
Position Pinning: Freezes displayed position jitter when stationary or moving below minimum speed thresholds.
-
NMEA / DGPS Output: Configures the serial port baud rate and NMEA sentences for output to marine autopilots, PC software, or external DGPS receivers.
-
Internal Simulator: Accessible via System Setup to practice route creation, simulated steering, and screen customization without requiring satellite lock.
Reset Procedures & Diagnostics
If the receiver displays persistent operational errors, fails to track satellites, or requires return to default parameters, several reset methods are supported.
-
Menu Factory Reset: Press MENU, select System Setup, highlight Preset Options (or Reset Options), press the Right Arrow key, and confirm the on-screen prompt to restore factory default configuration.
-
GPS Cold Start: In the GPS Setup menu, highlight Execute GPS Cold Start and press ENT. This clears corrupted satellite orbital cache files and forces fresh ephemeris data acquisition.
-
Soft Keypad Reset: Turn the unit OFF. Press and hold the MODE (or PAGES) key, then press and hold the PWR key. Release both buttons simultaneously once the unit powers on.
-
Diagnostic Test Menu: Turn the unit OFF. Press and hold the UP Arrow and DOWN Arrow keys simultaneously, then press and hold the PWR key until the TEST MENU appears. Highlight FINAL SETUP, press EXIT, then press ENT to exit test mode.
