Machine Setup and Preparation

Before operating the machine for the first time, place a scrap of fabric beneath the presser foot and run the machine without thread for several minutes to absorb and wipe away any excess manufacturing oil.

  1. Ensure the power switch is in the OFF ('O') position.

  2. If using the foot control: Insert the foot control pin plug into the foot control jack, insert the machine power plug into the machine inlet, and connect the power plug into an appropriate wall outlet. Turn the power switch ON ('I'). The foot control symbol appears on the LCD display.

  3. If sewing without the foot control: Leave the foot control disconnected. Insert the power plug into the machine inlet and wall outlet, then turn the power switch ON. The machine is operated using the Start/Stop button.

  4. To attach the large extension table: Pull the accessory box away from the machine to expose the free arm. Unfold the legs on the underside of the extension table, align the table with the free arm, and gently slide it to the right until it snaps into place. Adjust table height by turning the foot leg screws if necessary.

  5. To insert the knee lifter: Align the ribs on the knee lifter rod with the notches in the knee lifter socket located on the lower right of the front machine base, then push it in firmly.

Bobbin Winding and Threading

Always use Janome plastic 'J' bobbins designed for horizontal rotary hooks. Using other bobbins, such as pre-wound paper bobbins, can cause tension issues or damage the bobbin holder.

  1. Raise the horizontal spool pin, place a spool of thread on it with thread unwinding from the bottom, and firmly press the appropriate spool holder (large or small) against the spool.

  2. Set the speed control slider to its fastest position for winding.

  3. Draw the thread from the spool and guide it around the bobbin winding tension disk.

  4. Pass the thread through the hole in the bobbin from the inside to the outside.

  5. Place the bobbin onto the bobbin winder spindle and push the spindle to the right. The bobbin icon appears on the LCD display.

  6. Hold the free end of the thread tail and start the machine. After a few layers have wound, stop the machine and snip the thread tail flush with the bobbin hole.

  7. Restart the machine. The winder will stop automatically when the bobbin is full (or automatically after 2 minutes for safety).

  8. Push the bobbin spindle back to the left, remove the bobbin, and cut the connecting thread.

Inserting the bobbin into the rotary hook:

  1. Turn the power switch OFF.

  2. Slide the hook cover release button to the right and lift off the clear cover plate.

  3. Place the bobbin in the bobbin holder with the thread running off counterclockwise (forming a 'P' shape).

  4. Hold the bobbin with your fingertip so it does not rotate, and guide the thread into the front notch of the bobbin holder.

  5. Draw the thread to the left under the tension guide into path 1, ensuring it clicks out from the side notch.

  6. Continue drawing the thread along path 2 and pull it to the right through the built-in trimmer slit to cut it to the proper starting length.

  7. Fit the left edge of the hook cover plate into the opening and press down until it snaps closed. Sewing can begin without manually drawing up the bobbin thread.

  1. Raise the presser foot lifter. Press the Needle Up/Down button to raise the thread take-up lever to its highest position, then turn the power switch OFF.

  2. Draw the thread from the spool and route it through the upper thread guide.

  3. While lightly restraining the thread near the spool, guide the thread downward into the right channel and around the check spring holder at the bottom.

  4. Firmly draw the thread upward through the left channel, over the take-up lever from right to left, and into the take-up lever eye.

  5. Guide the thread downward through the lower thread guide, and slip it behind the needle bar thread guide from the right side.

  6. To use the built-in needle threader: Lower the presser foot. Pull the needle threader knob down as far as it will go so the small hook passes through the needle eye. Guide the thread through guide (a), under hook (b), and between the holder plate. Slowly release the threader knob to pull a loop through the eye, then pull the loop through to the rear.

  7. Note: The built-in needle threader is suitable for needle sizes #11/75 through #16/100 and thread sizes 50 to 90. Do not use with twin needles or heavy thread size #30 or thicker.

Replacing the needle:

  1. Turn the power switch OFF.

  2. Raise the needle to its highest position and lower the presser foot.

  3. Loosen the needle clamp screw counterclockwise using the supplied screwdriver key and remove the needle.

  4. Insert the new needle into the needle clamp with the flat side facing the rear.

  5. Push the needle upward firmly until it stops against the stopper pin.

  6. Tighten the needle clamp screw firmly clockwise using the screwdriver key.

  • Start/Stop Button: Starts or stops sewing without the foot control. Press and hold to sew at a slow crawling speed; release to run at the speed set on the slider. Does not function when foot control is plugged in.

  • Reverse Button: Sews in reverse while held down on standard straight and zigzag stitches (00, 01, 07, 08, 30). For other stitches, pressing reverse immediately sews locking stitches and stops.

  • Auto-Lock Button: Sews locking reinforcement stitches immediately on utility stitches, or completes the current pattern and sews locking stitches on decorative stitches before stopping automatically.

  • Needle Up/Down Button: Raises or lowers the needle bar with a single press. Used to set memorized needle stop position (default is down).

  • Automatic Thread Cutter Button: Trims needle and bobbin threads simultaneously. Press and hold until the scissor icon appears on the LCD to enable automatic thread trimming at the completion of locking stitches.

  • Twin Needle Button: Limits stitch width automatically to prevent needle breakage when sewing with twin needles. Press twice to cancel.

  • Speed Control Slider: Sets the maximum operating speed from slow to fast (up to 820 stitches per minute).

  • Presser Foot Pressure Dial: Adjusts foot downward pressure from level 1 to 6. Default is 6 for normal fabrics; set to 3 for applique and basting, 2-4 for fine fabrics, and 1 for heavy stretch knits.

  • Drop Feed Lever: Located behind the free arm bed. Push to the right to lower feed dogs for free-motion quilting, darning, and button sewing. Push left and turn handwheel towards you to re-engage.

Care, Cleaning, and Maintenance

Always turn off the power switch and unplug the machine from the electrical outlet before performing any cleaning or maintenance. The Janome 5300QDC does not require user lubrication or oiling.

  1. Press the needle up/down button to raise the needle, then switch off and unplug the power supply cord.

  2. Remove the needle and presser foot.

  3. Slide the hook cover release button to the right and remove the hook cover plate and bobbin.

  4. Remove the two needle plate setscrews using the screwdriver key and lift off the needle plate.

  5. Carefully lift out the black bobbin holder from the hook race.

  6. Clean accumulated lint and dust from the bobbin holder, feed dogs, auto thread cutter mechanism, and hook race using the lint brush or a small vacuum cleaner nozzle.

  7. Wipe the interior center of the hook race clean with a soft, dry cloth.

  8. Reinstall the bobbin holder so that its projection knob rests snugly against the stopper in the hook race.

  9. Reinstall the needle plate and secure it with the two setscrews. Replace the presser foot and needle.

Correcting deformed stretch patterns: If stretch stitches or buttonhole bartacks appear compressed or stretched due to fabric density, insert a screwdriver into the feed balancing dial located behind the free arm bed. Turn the dial toward '+' if the pattern is compressed, or toward '-' if the pattern is drawn out.
