  1. Measuring AC Current: Turn the rotary switch to the 'A~' position. Press the trigger to open the clamp jaws and encircle exactly one single conductor (live or neutral line). Ensure the clamp jaws close completely. Read the AC current on the display. Note: Clamping both live and neutral lines together, or a multi-core cable, will cause opposing magnetic fields to cancel and yield an erroneous zero reading.

  2. Measuring DC Voltage: Insert the black test lead into the COM jack and the red lead into the INPUT jack. Turn the rotary selector to the 'V=' setting. Touch the test probes across the DC circuit or battery terminals. The LCD displays the voltage value along with the polarity of the red probe.

  3. Measuring AC Voltage: Insert the black test lead into the COM jack and the red lead into the INPUT jack. Turn the rotary selector to the 'V~' setting. Touch the test leads across the AC power source or load. Read the measured AC voltage on the LCD.

  4. Measuring Resistance: Turn the rotary selector to the shared Ω/diode/buzzer/capacitance position. Press the 'SET' button until the 'Ω' symbol appears on the LCD. Ensure the circuit under test has all power disconnected and capacitors discharged. Touch the probes across the resistor and read the resistance value.

  5. Testing Diodes: At the shared measurement position, press 'SET' until the diode symbol is displayed. Connect the red probe to the anode and the black probe to the cathode. The display indicates the forward voltage drop. If the diode is reversed or defective, 'OL' is displayed.

  6. Continuity Testing: At the shared position, press 'SET' until the audible buzzer/continuity symbol appears. Touch probes across the conductor. If resistance is less than 50 Ω, the built-in buzzer sounds and the red indicator LED illuminates.

  7. Measuring Capacitance: Completely discharge the capacitor by short-circuiting its terminals prior to connection. At the shared dial position, press 'SET' until the capacitance unit ('nF', 'uF', or 'mF') appears. Connect the probes across the capacitor leads and observe the reading once stabilized.

  8. Measuring Frequency (Hz): Insert test leads into the COM and INPUT jacks. Turn the rotary dial to 'Hz'. Connect probes across the AC signal source. Read the frequency on the display.

  9. Non-Contact Voltage (NCV) Detection: Turn the rotary switch to 'NCV'. Move the top clamp sensor tip close to the conductor or electrical outlet. When AC voltage exceeds approximately 100V, the red indicator flashes and the buzzer emits an audible beep.

  10. Live / Zero Wire Identification: With the meter in NCV or voltage detection mode, insert a single red probe into the INPUT jack. Insert the probe tip into an electrical socket slot. A live wire triggers rapid beeping and an alert display ('—-' or flashing LED), whereas a neutral wire produces no alarm ('EF' display).

Reset and Power Management

The ANENG ST181 is a standard digital clamp meter and does not contain a software menu or physical pinhole button for factory settings. State resets and power initialization are managed through the functional pushbuttons, rotary switch, and power supply.

  • Zeroing Baseline Offset (REL Reset): To reset residual millivolt or baseline values before taking sensitive measurements, press the 'REL' button briefly. To exit Relative mode and reset to normal reading mode, press and hold the 'REL' button for approximately 2 seconds.

  • Clearing Data Hold: Pressing the 'H/*' button toggles display hold off. Rotating the rotary selector switch to another function position also automatically clears active display hold.

  • Waking from Auto Power-Off: The meter automatically enters a sleep state after approximately 10 minutes of inactivity to preserve battery life. To reset the meter and restore operation, rotate the rotary selector back to the 'OFF' position and then switch to the desired measurement mode.

  • Full Power Reset: In the event of a frozen or unresponsive display, turn the selector to 'OFF', remove the rear battery cover, take out both AAA batteries for 10 seconds, reinstall the batteries, and replace the cover.

Care, Maintenance, and Safety Guidelines

  • Always inspect the meter housing and test lead insulation before every use. Do not use the meter if the case is cracked or if probe wires have exposed metal.

  • Do not apply voltages exceeding 600V DC or 600V rms AC between the input terminals or between any terminal and earth ground.

  • Keep fingers behind the molded tactile finger guards on the probes at all times during measurements.

  • Connect the common (black) test lead before connecting the live (red) test lead. When disconnecting, remove the live lead first.

  • Do not operate the meter around explosive gas, vapor, flammable materials, or severe dust.

  • Always disconnect circuit power and fully discharge all capacitors before performing in-circuit resistance, continuity, diode, or capacitance measurements.

  • When the low battery icon appears on the screen, replace both AAA batteries promptly to avoid erroneous readings that may present an electrical hazard.

  • Clean the meter exterior using a dry or slightly damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, solvents, or submerge the instrument in liquids.

Troubleshooting Guide

Symptom

Possible Cause

Corrective Action

Meter does not power on

Batteries depleted or installed with inverted polarity

Open the rear battery door and install two fresh 1.5V AAA batteries according to the polarity markings.

Display shuts off during use

Automatic power-off activated after 10 minutes of inactivity

Rotate the rotary switch to 'OFF' and then back to the desired measurement mode to restore power.
