Function and device overview

The Homematic IP Window and Door Contact – optical reliably detects open windows and doors by means of an integrated infrared sensor. Open windows and doors are immediately displayed in the Homematic IP app – so you can keep a close eye on your windows and doors even while out and about. Thanks to the two different caps, the colour of the device adapts to the door and window frames. Furthermore, installation of the window and door contact is easy thanks to the supplied adhesive strips or screws. Thanks to the integrated tamper contact, you are immediately informed by means of the app of any tampering with the window and door contact.

  • Strong extraneous light and contamination of the sensor can lead to functional limitations.

General system information

This device is part of the Homematic IP Smart Home system and communicates via the Homematic IP wireless protocol. All devices in the Homematic IP system can be configured easily and individually with a smartphone using the Homematic IP app. Alternatively, you have the option of operating Homematic IP devices via the CCU3 or in conjunction with many partner solutions. The available functions provided by the system in combination with other components are described in the Homematic IP User Guide. All current technical documents and updates can be found at www.homematic-ip.com.

Start-up

Pairing

  • Please read this entire section before starting the pairing procedure. First set up your Homematic
  • Access Point using the Homematic IP app so that you can use other Homematic IP devices in the system. For further information, please refer to the Access Point operating manual.

To integrate the window and door contact into your system and enable it to communicate with other Homematic IP devices, you must add the device to your Homematic IP Access Point first.

Proceed as follows to add the window and door contact:

  • Open the Homematic IP app on your smartphone.
  • Select “Add device”.
  • Remove the insulation strip from the battery compartment (C) of the window and door contact.
  • The pairing mode is active for 3 minutes.
  • You can manually start the pairing mode for another 3 minutes by briefly pressing the system button (F).homematic-IP-HmIP-SWDO-2-Window-and-Door-Contact-fig-13

Your device will automatically appear in the Homematic IP app.

  • To confirm, enter the last four digits of the device number (SGTIN) in your app, or scan the QR code. The device number can be found on the sticker supplied in the package contents or attached to the device.
  • Wait until pairing is complete.
  • If pairing was successful, the LED (F) lights up green. The device is now ready for use.
  • If the LED lights up red, please try again.
  • Select the desired solution for your device.
  • In the app, give the device a name and allocate it to a room.

Installation
Please read this entire section before starting the installation process.

Selecting a suitable installation location

  • Select a window or door for installation of the window and door contact.
  • Fasten the window and door contact on the side of the window or door where the handle is located, in the upper third of the window/ door frame (for fastening details, see (see „6.2.2 Adhesive strip or screw installation“ on page 18)).homematic-IP-HmIP-SWDO-2-Window-and-Door-Contact-fig-4
  • The infrared sensor (D) must point in the direction of the window casement/door leaf.homematic-IP-HmIP-SWDO-2-Window-and-Door-Contact-fig-5
  • The ideal spacing between the housing edge of the window and door contact and the window casement/door leaf is 3 mm (see figure).
  • If the window/door handle is located on the right side, you must turn the window and door contact so that the infrared sensor (D) points in the direction of the window casement/door leaf on this side too (see figure).
  • The device cannot be installed if the window/door frame is too small.
  • For poorly reflecting surfaces (e.g. dark window frames), the supplied reflecting sticker must be fixed to the inner edge of the window casement/door leaf opposite the infrared sensor of the window and door contact.

Adhesive strip or screw installation
You can use

  • the supplied double-sided adhesive strip or
  • countersunk head screws to install the window and door contact on the window/door frame.

Adhesive strip installation
Proceed as follows to install the window and door contact with the adhesive strip:

  • Attach the double-sided adhesive strip to the rear of the electronic unit (B) and press the electronic unit onto the desired position of the window/door frame.

  • Make sure that the installation surface is smooth, solid, undamaged, free of dust, grease, and solvents, and not too cold to ensure that the adhesive strip will adhere for a long time.

Screw installation

  • Using screws will damage the window and/or door. For those living in rented accommodation, this could lead to a landlord making a claim for compensation or holding back a tenant’s deposit. Proceed as follows to install the win-dow and door contact with the screws:
  • Mark the bore holes (A) on the win-dow and door frame.homematic-IP-HmIP-SWDO-2-Window-and-Door-Contact-fig-7
  • If you are working with hard sur-faces, pre-drill the holes marked using a 1.5 mm drill (not necessary for soft surfaces).
  • Place the electronic unit (B) on the desired installation location and screw both countersunk head screws into the bore holes (A).homematic-IP-HmIP-SWDO-2-Window-and-Door-Contact-fig-8

Changing the batteries

If a flat battery is displayed in the app or on the device (see „8.4 Error codes and flashing sequences“ on page 22), replace the used battery with a new LR03/micro/AAA battery. You must observe the correct battery polarity. Proceed as follows to replace the bat-tery of the window and door contact:

  • Pull the cap (E) off the electronic unit (B). To do so, gently squeeze the cap from above and below with your index finger and thumb. You will find the battery compartment (C) underneath.homematic-IP-HmIP-SWDO-2-Window-and-Door-Contact-fig-9
  • Insert a new 1.5 V LR03/micro/AAA battery into the battery com-partment (C), making sure that you insert them the right way around.homematic-IP-HmIP-SWDO-2-Window-and-Door-Contact-fig-10
  • After inserting the batteries, pay attention to the flashing sequences of the LED (F)(see „8.4 Error codes and flashing sequences“ on page 22).

Once the battery has been inserted, the window and door contact will perform a self-test (approx. 2 seconds). Afterwards, initialisation is carried out. The LED test display will indicate that initialisation is complete by lighting up orange and green.

Troubleshooting

Weak batteries
Provided that the voltage value permits it, the window and door contact will remain ready for operation even if the battery voltage is low. Depending on the particular load, it may be possible to send transmissions again repeatedly, once the batteries have been allowed a brief recovery period. If the voltage drops again while sending, this will be displayed in the Homematic IP app and on the device (see „8.4 Error codes and flashing sequences “ on page 22). In this case, replace the flat battery with a new one (see „7 Changing the batteries“ on page 20).

Command not confirmed
If at least one receiver does not confirm a command, the device LED lights up red at the end of the failed transmission process. The reason for the failed transmission may be radio inter-ference (see „11 General information about radio operation“ on page 23). This may be caused by the following:

  • Receiver cannot be reached;
  • The receiver is unable to execute the command (load failure, mechanical blockage, etc.); or
  • The receiver is faulty.

Duty cycle
The duty cycle is a legally regulated limit of the transmission time of devices in the 868 MHz range. The aim of this regulation is to safeguard the operation of all devices working in the 868 MHz range. In the 868 MHz frequency range we use, the maximum transmission time of any device is 1% of an hour (i.e., 36 seconds in an hour). Devices must cease transmission when they reach the 1% limit until this time restriction comes to an end. Homematic IP devices are designed and produced with 100% con-formity to this regulation. During normal operation, the duty cycle is not usually reached. However, repeated and radio-intensive pairing processes mean that it may be reached in isolated instances during start-up or initial installation of a system. If the duty cycle is exceeded, this is indicated by three slow red flashes of the device LED, and may manifest itself in the device temporarily working incorrectly. The device starts working correctly again after a short period (max. 1 hour).

Error codes and flashing sequences

Restoring factory settings

  • The device’s factory settings can be restored. If you do this, you will lose all your settings. Proceed as follows to restore the factory settings of the window and door contact:
  • Pull the cap (E) off of the electronic unit (B) (see figure).
  • Remove the used battery.
  • Insert the new battery, making sure that it is the right way around, and press and hold the system button (F) for 4 seconds at the same time until the LED (F) quickly starts flashing orange.
  • Release the system button.
  • Press and hold the system button again for 4 seconds until the LED lights up green.
  • Release the system button to finish restoring the factory settings.

The device will perform a restart.

Maintenance and cleaning

The device does not require you to carry out any maintenance other than replacing the battery when necessary. Leave any main-tenance or repair to a specialist. Clean the device using a soft, clean, dry and lint-free cloth. You may dampen the cloth a little with lukewarm water to remove more stubborn marks. Do not use any detergents containing solvents, as they could corrode the plastic housing and label.

General information about radio operation

Radio transmission is performed on a non-exclusive transmission path, which means that there is a possibility of interference occurring. Interference can also be caused by switching operations, electrical motors or defective electrical devices. The transmission range within buildings can differ significantly from that available in open space. Instructions for disposal

For the protection of health and the environment, you must take the prod-uct, all electronic parts included in the package contents, and the batteries to a municipal collection point for waste electrical and electronic equipment to ensure correct disposal of the same. Distributors of electrical and electronic equipment or batteries must also take back waste equipment or used batter-ies free of charge. By disposing of them separately, you are making a valuable contribution to the reuse, recycling and other methods of recovery of used devices and used batteries.
